Action-Adventure Terminator: Dark Fate

I think even outside the Terminator franchise we're living in a quite cynical time when Hollywood are treating these IP's like a factory assembly line and when a sequel or remake or reboot fails we move onto "eh lets wait 2-3 years and try again". For sure it plays a big part that the last amazing Terminator movie was almost 30 years ago, and while I don't HATE the sequels, T3, Salvation and Genisys all failed to live up to the expectations and when you look at T6 you might as well have Cameron say "trust us this time" in interviews.

But yeah even outside Terminator I've seen this happen to so many franchises I am invested in and even though these people want to make great movies, very rarely does that passion translate onto the screen. A movie is made to make money (as it has always been) but for every movie like Mad Max Fury Road where you can tell there's so much passion and love and craft behind that movie (and that's also why it turned out so great) you have maybe 10-15 "generic" blockbuster movies that will entertain you for the moment, but they won't be movies you will talk about 20 or 30 years from now like T1 and T2.

It's a bit different.
In T3 its revealed that John is murdered by the T-800 in the future. Which I have some trouble accepting. At that point in the future John would be paranoid as **** and constantly killing terminators. I dont buy the idea that future John would trust even the T-800 unconditionally and let him walk up to him and shoot him

In Dark Fate he's murdered by the T-800 in the 80s or 90s. When John is still young and trusting enough to let a familiar Terminator close to him. And after the events of T2 John sees the T-800 as a father figure. He's the perfect trojan horse. Just send a T-800 back in time and he can walk right up to young Jon and scatter his pesky brains all over a wall.

But in T3, the T-800 explicitly states Skynet used John's affection toward that model number because of the events in T2, which made it easier for the terminator to get close and kill John. So the conflict in that movie is John needs to trust the same Terminator who killed him. In the new movie, if the spoiler is true, Sarah must trust the Terminator who killed John.

I'm hopeful, they've made a good film.

I'm just worried no matter how good it is, it'll flop. This IP has been badly damaged and the stink from Genisys still hasn't worn off. Doesn't help that the marketing makes Dark Fate come across as Genisys 2.0

If this truly is it, I really, really hope they can go out with a worthy film.

how much would it need to make dosmestic/worldwide at the box office to be considered a success?

I'm hopeful for this, but it does feel like things could go either way right now. This could either be 2010 Predators or 2018 The Predator. Praying for 2010.

Eh. 2010 Predators was definitely better that that goofy s***bomb that came out last year but if that’s the highest level of quality that either franchise can produce then maybe we should just let them both die.

Both franchises should die or at least on film but 2010 Predators was pretty good and underrated

I really loved Predators personally so if DF can match what that had to offer then I'll be happy. Is it the greatest film ever? Nah. But it expanded on existing concepts in a way that made sense rather than say putting a predator's head on a dog's body lol.

Predators was like Alice in Chains after they got a new lead singer whereas The Predator was like watching your drunk buddy sing Alice in Chains' top hits all night at karaoke.

DF probably won't be a genre-defining film like the first two flicks. But it can still be a good film that adds new and worthy context to an existing story.

It's time travel, have some fun with it. I do think it's smarter to go the DF route though of not rewriting the past like Genisys did. And I think the idea of Judgement Day just being delayed and seemingly even worse is the most streamlined story progression.

Lol, that description of The Predator is so spot on. There were aspects of Predators I really liked; the concept was cool and I really enjoyed Brody’s character. But the “twist” with Topher and the misleading marketing (which made it seem like they were being hunted by an army of Predators and we got... three) didn’t ruin the movie for me but it definitely took it down a few notches. Still, it’s a million times better than Shane Black’s nonsensical mess.

I adore Linda. :hrt:

She most certainly didn't need to come back. Her legacy was already cemented in cinematic history in 1991, by giving one of the greatest performances of all time.

She already turned down a previous chance to return with T3 because she knew it would have been a waste.

For her sake, I really hope this succeeds and she didn't come back for naught. Both Linda and Sarah deserve a great ending.

Yeah, Linda is great and whatever happens with this movie, her performance in T2 is one for the ages. But I hope this movie is worthy of her.

Nice. Didn't even know they had a reunion tour going

It's not sad if they can still entertain and perform. Not being relevant anymore doesn't mean they shouldn't make a little comeback with a new album or tour. There's still a fanbase willing to hear or seem one more time if they're up for it

I think this looks okay overall but the doom and gloom is probably because we've had THREE bad sequels in a row. Yeah, I know some people liked T3, or Salvation, or Genysiessysssesyiuss, but the general consensus is that the movies sucked (hence the reason they are pretending they didn't happen. It's a franchise that hasn't known what to do with itself because it probably should have ended with T2. So while this movie looks pretty good to me overall (although that CGI airplane stunt looks straight out of Genisys), I'm still a little apprehensive about it. That said Mackenzie Davis is awesome and I could watch her do anything. And it's cool to see Linda Hamilton again. But did they REALLY have to make her say, "I'll be back"? I'm not sure who sounded more less enthused in their delivery of that line, her or Christian Bale? You could tell that was the moment during filming Salvation that Bale realized that the movie was going to ****ing suck.
The franchise is just stuck in the past and that's the problem. They need something new. I appreciate that TS at least tried that with the future war setting. I mean they still screwed up, but that's what this franchise needs a new idea. We don't need "I'll be back," "Come with me if you want to live." It didn't help the last 3 movies and it just comes across as tired.

Not trying to take anythign away from anyone looking forward to this, but I just don't see what's interesting about this movie. What's the angle. Is it that it's more woman centric? I mean that's cool and I'm all for better representation...but that's not going to get me in the theater. Especially after 3 bad sequels and, imo, a bad trailer.

I would/would've loved a trilogy of John Connor and a platoon of soldiers in the future war. That's a great way to reinvent the franchise instead of just doing everything over. That's what TDF feels like. Just a retread. Except "Hey look Linda Hamilton's back"

I love that comparison, and I agree about Predators. I thought it was quite ok, although it could've been better. Haven't seen The Predator though (and probably never will).
