Action-Adventure Terminator: Dark Fate

As much as I love action packed blockbuster spectacles, it would pretty nice to go back to being a dark & gritty sci-fi horror/slasher thriller like the first film or even a grounded action thriller with horror elements like T2 but that probably won't happen again unless they completely reboot the whole franchise again or well the first film and keep some old elements while making new big changes as most remakes do

That's a damn good idea for a future war movie while adding some other layers of dark, twisted oppression and other dynamics of human instinct, both noble and wicked.

I just don't know how I feel about being TOO sympathetic to Skynet and particularly the T-800s

I would focus more on paranoia. Use the thing that ultimately makes Terminators so potentially scary and a threat. Them as infiltrators. Going full Aliens on the T-800 would be a mistake.

Its amazing they keep cranking out bad sequels to this but we’ve yet to get a tron sequel.

I was watching clips of the Sarah Connor Chronicles last night. If anything after T2 deserves to be considered canon as part of the Terminator mythology it's that show. It never got the ending it deserved, and frankly Summer Glau was the perfect Terminator, innocently beautiful, yet genuinely terrifying. I have no idea why no-one ever considered a Terminator movie with her in it, because she was as good as Arnold and Robert Patrick.

So am I the only one that liked it?

I overall like it as I do T3 and Salvation. They aren't anywhere near the level of the first two and I wish there weren't sequels after T2 but they are entertaining action popcorn movies!

Genisys is the only one I more than just dislike!

I agree Summer Glau is an underrated talent. I wish she became a bigger star.

Yeah I think you’d definitely need the shades of grey in there. War is ugly and good people do terrible things for the bigger picture. It also can provide a hunting ground for sociopaths. I’d definitely want to see something that shows the good and bad of both angles.

That's what I want. Grounded sci-fi with horror elements. Tone down the superhero action and CGI jumps in slo-mo.

I think the reason T2 works is that it ends on a moment of ambiguity. There is hope that the future is changed but it's uncertain. At the very least, if Judgement Day does happen, there's some sort of hope for humanity's future. I think they were smart to cut out that alternate ending with a utopian, peaceful future. It doesn't work.

So any follow-up sort of has an obligation to ruin that moment and ending.

And every sequel, other than Salvation really, they can't figure out how to deal with time travel, make it work, and make it make sense. None of it works or makes sense anymore.

100%. So much talent. A Terminator film with her returning as Cameron would have launched her into stardom, I'm almost certain of that. That series actually left of with John going into the future to rescue Cameron. That actually would have been a great new direction to take the franchise, John Conner this time being the one to save the Terminator.

Especially her association with Whedon. Although I can't really think of many characters off the top of my head she would suit. I think she could have been a pretty good fit for Lois Lane.

Where is it getting love? It's often sh*t on and most franchise ranking videos I've seen on youtube has it as last or 2nd to last with Genisys. Don't think many agree with you about it being the best sequel but I myself agree with you that it's an underrated movie and I like it.

T3 probably would be appreciated more if the humor had been toned down and a different actor for John or at least if he wasn't made so pu***fied

I have seen people saying in this thread since DF came out that T3 is the best one since T2 and the direction it took was probably best suited also.

It's nice to see.

Saw this last night. Thought it was fun. I liked it as much as T3. I think the decision to make this a direct sequel to T2 was a good one. Made everything a little easier to follow obviously.

As a big, action filled blockbuster, sure. But, I feel there is room for the franchise to exist in other forms.
Maybe TV, but a movie? No.

While I'm not opposed to that, I just don't see why a studio would do that. And narrative wise how do you separate it from The Terminator. Are you gonna do another Terminator chases someone movie? I think that whole narrative is just done with. They've done it 5/6 times. I think that concept is just played out.

I actually agree on The Predator. That could still very much work. You just need to make it a down and dirty, R-rated survival film which is what the first one was at its essence. And you need colorful, charismatic characters that you root for.
You can even change it. In it's own concept. We dont need necessarily need replica of first one either. Put in Feudal Japan era. Let Predator be hunted by different type of hunter than military one with guns and muscles like Arnold was.

Put in katanas, shurikens. Let put ninjas or samurai type hunter who can take advantage of their skill. Specially when we know Predator can respect skills and codes, hence Bushido code. I am here just putting example what kind of movie with similar concept you can do.

But people who have this ideas dont get possibility to make or pich this kind of movies. It's easier to recycle crap, not respect original movies and do easy cash grabbing sequels.

I mean...that's still recycling crap just putting it in a different time period

This isnt Predator thread so it will be my last post. But whole idea of Predator is him coming to Earth in different time period to hunt for sport during hot time weather when some kind of battles were happening. In it's own that's all there is to Predator franchise. It's essence of it.

let's get back on topic.

So am I the only one that liked it?

Currently at 71% Critic score & 84% Audiecne score on Rotten Tomatoes which is extremely good, so no others liked it too. It just didnt translate to Boxoffice.

So apparently Tim Miller was essentially fired in post. Cameron went ape **** and took over the edit.
