Action-Adventure Terminator: Dark Fate

Happy birthday T2. Such an iconic film. I prefer the first by a hair, but damn T2 is so well constructed.

I'm a total mark for Terminator 3. Could have been much better but I like what they did with minus the goofy gags. Easily my favourite of the lesser Terminator movies. Honestly I think the CG is great in most places, it's still ILM afterall, but like many films of the time they were a little too ambitious with what could be achieved.

The third one had a decent idea for a story. They just tried topping the T-1000 and you can’t.

This is just a fact, unfortunately. We've seen many attempts but no-one has managed to top it.

Small credit to the Rev-9. It pales in comparison, but I think it has a pretty simple and effective gimmick. Two instead of one could be really scary. I also liked that the T-X was designed to fight reprogrammed Terminators.

The Rev-9 was great.

I can see why so many want to revisit this in terms of sequels, reboots etc, it's such a great universe.

For me, I would do a movie that happens alongside The terminator. We don't see events of that movie, but it's set at the same time. They sent multiple terminators back and we follow the path of another perspective and this allows anything to happen as well, it's blank canvas... new time line.

Would I have Arnie involved? I would... but in a subtle, respectful way.. Arnie is an army general, working with sky net making these machines, simile to T3 but way more realistic and serious. He's the godfather of it all, then when it goes wrong, he rights a few wrongs.

Set in the 80's with sub plot in the future... a terminator comes back in time and kills its target, but not before the family put up a good resistance with the help of another sent from the future - a child then grows up scarred by this, essentially a new John Connor made. We then get to the future, it's that character that goes back, but like the butterfly effect, it had to happen that way!!

I've talked on this in the past but good to revisit opinions sometimes. I wished they would have just continued with more future wars taking place after Salvation. It took 4 films to get to that point so why not go ahead and do it.
The ONLY Terminator films I consider canon is Ternimator, T2, T3 & Salvation.
Genisys was simply ok. I enjoyed the retread of Terminator and T2 in it but I dont consider it canon. Simply a alternate timeline like a multiverse type deal.
I couldnt even finish watching Dark Fate...... film was complete trash in my opinion. Even having Sarah Connor return couldn't save it. Plus..... SCREW THEM! John Connor is The Resistance.

I'd be fin
Or hear me out. Just re-release T1 and T2 in theaters every 5 years so that we can enjoy it on the big screen.
I'd be fine with that too.

Since I pretend Dark Fate dosent exist, when I revist the series occasionally I watch T1, T2, T3 & Salvation. With T3 being my least favorite of the four films I consider main timeline.

I would take T3 and Dark Fate over Salvation any day. Salvation had the right idea doing the future war, but then they gave it to McG to mess up, he couldn’t even get the T-600 right.

Whew, I threw up a little bit in my mouth reading that comment. HAHAHAHA.

But if you feel that way I'm sure you felt the same about my comment too. All good, to each their own.

1000x this.

The future war!

It's because of the goodwill of T1 and T2 that this still exists as a franchise. People always seem to forgive the series no matter how disappointing the sequels may be because of how good those first two films were. It's a lot like the Alien franchise in that way but at least the later entries in those series tried to do something different with each film, at least up until Covenant. All of the Terminator sequels that came out after T2 were derivative of T2 in some way with the exception of Salvation, but that was just another disappointment in its own way. T2 really was the peak of the series when it came to the overall threat level. The villains in T3, Genisys, and Dark Fate were basically T-1000 clones. It's as @samsnee said...

Agreed. I have contempt for Salvation that I don't for others because of McG. He's a proper snake oil salesman. I'd take any of the sequels before that one.

The issue I had with Sarah, is the fact the LH aged gracefully (or not) realistically in the real world away from Hollywood...
So on screen she didn't look like other mature women her age, she looked old.. which is fine. But they tried to give her this 'cool' ptsd angle, but still glorified her.. I would have made her look rough, sleeping the streets, with a shopping cart, she looks insane to anyone else... she goes back to her tent... there is a light switched on, inside, she likes the persona so people leave her alone, but the drink and drugs sooth the pain and ptsd - she is def messed up. Think T2 in the psych ward but on steroids. She can't handle the real world, but she has to wait to try and redeem John. Would have been bold to have made her a typical bat**** crazy cat lady that the new generation feel for, but can't relate too. Here's the cool part, she captured the t800 that killed John, he's basically in a hole, a water tank or something, he can't get out and she is torturign daily, watching him die - obviously the torture part is for her own self satisfaction, but here's the thing, the t800 over years changed... evolved AI to be self aware, at times he's like a growling zombie, bloodies hands and teeth, scratching to get out, at other times, he's compassionate, begging to be released.. Sarah doesn't fall for it..

She drops a rat in daily, the t800 destroys it, lets it go, whatever... the rat attacks the flesh to eat... one gruesome scene is where she drops a barrel full in, t800 just stands there staring at her as the rats stacks and eat his flesh... ripping it from his skeleton, the machine looks down and then destroys them throwing the carcasses up.. Sarah closes the lid for another day.
That's the subplot.
A new terminator arrives, looking for the t800 and Sarah, the team in the facility chase this terminator as it hunts Sarah.. it finds Sarah, they play cat and mouse, one of the others falls inside the tank, after lifting the lid to hide in.. the t800 lies to the person and gets them to help them out, Sarah screams as she sees the t800 out of the tank, holding the severed head of the kid that got him out, she looks behind her, the other terminator is there, she sighs in resignation... the new terminator pushes Sarah away and blasts the old t800 they battle it out, you see the old t800 is the key to the resistance finging his arm and using it to learn how to defeat sky net of the future.

both terminators get destroyed. the end.

As far as I'm concerned, the good will has been squandered. It's mostly pretenders chasing the shadow of a giant and trying to fill shoes they are not big enough to wear.

Exactly. They’ve run out of ideas. Sending another terminator back to kill other people. Sending a terminator back to stop the first terminator. Setting it in the future.

Arnold is too old to do another one and they’ve already done the “terminator ages like a human” angle twice.

They brought Linda back which was cool but I don’t see another one happening with her.

They squandered using an adult John Connor even though they had freaking Christian Bale for the part.

This franchise is basically dead. I’m surprised they didn’t try the Terminator vs Alien / Predator / Robocop at this point.

One thing they could do imo is using Different universes/Timelines clashing.
One Last big story that brings back all the "important" characters from the various Timelines and stuff.

But i think for that the Franchise name isnt as big anymore that someone would try this financially etc.

You could branch it off and make a new IP where the focus is on fighting Skynet, but the Terminator concept doesnt have too much left that hasnt been explored.
