Terminator: Genisys - Part 4

I don't think this franchise is screwed (yet), but I do think they made a huge mistake by bringing Arnold back, and basically relying on him for success. If they were going to reboot this, they should've just done it. He looks old, and I don't care what excuse they make in the story, the dude is 70 and he's playing a robot. I don't agree with the notion that Arnold is the only key to making this series successful and that Salvation was the proof of that. Salvation just wasn't a good movie. You don't need Arnold to make a good movie.

The whole problem with everything after T2 is that we don't know which timeline to follow, and that includes The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Now with Genisys, the storyline in the old movies still counts, but it's being reset. That leaves us with 5 separate continuities - it's just too convoluted. There are hundreds of questions to be asked.

What they should've done is COMPLETELY IGNORE the past movies and TV show, and LITERALLY start from scratch, without Arnold. Tell the entire story again as if it were the first time, just like with Batman Begins, just like with Casino Royale, just like with Man of Steel, just like with The Amazing Spider-Man. That's how you do it. Superman Returns is an example of what you don't do, and now I'm seeing the same thing with Genisys.

Get an actor to play the Terminator who is younger and is an action star. Hell, there are dozens. The Rock, Jason Momoa, Vin Diesel, Jeremy Renner, Chris Hemsworth, Michael Fassbender, Channing Tatum, Tom Hardy, Idris Elba, Javier Bardem. They could all EASILY carry the franchise, and they barely don't even need to speak.

Breathe new life into the series, don't rely on same star from 30 years ago who barely had any dialogue. He has no character. There's no personality or character there. The T-101 is a completely blank slate. He doesn't even have a name. It's not like they have to follow an arc. He's not Indiana Jones or James Bond - and hell, they ARE recasting them. Meanwhile, they're sticking to the 70 year old actor who played an emotionless robot who hardly speaks. It's a ROBOT. Get someone else. :cmad:
They probably think of Arnie as The Brand for this franchise.

Outside of The Rock and Momoa, all of these suggestions are terrible.

They're only terrible if you subscribe to the idea that only gigantic, musclebound actors can play Terminators. But that notion has already been proven wrong, since Robert Patrick is a normal-sized guy.

Momoa I think has the not just the size, but a look about him that's a good mix of qualities I think would work for Terminator. There's an animalism to the way he looks at your that would undercut the cold robotic quality of Schwarzenegger and Robert Patrick. But I think there's just enough charisma to him that it could catch you off guard.

I have justifiable reasons for writing of the other actors;

Renner - Works best as a team player I've found. At least in the action genre. I don't think he can carry an action movie on his own, if The Bourne Legacy is any indication.

Diesel - I honestly don't think he would do it. As an actor, he's extremely focused on establishing new franchises, and when you have a franchise as successful as The Fast and the Furious, the last thing you're gonna do is attach yourself to a brand that's been in the red technically since the third movie (although I loved the Sarah Connor Chronicles).

Hemsworth - too charming, and if you downplay that too much, he loses his appeal.

Fassbender - . . . . Okay I'll give you that one!

Tom Hardy/Idris Elba - STOP FANCASTING THEM FOR EVERYTHING!!!!!

Javier Bardem - So he can just do Chigurh again? That's okay, thanks.

You might be right that Diesel would never do it, but I think he could do well if he was cast. And yeah, Hardy and Elba are fancast for everything, but either would be good. Agree about Renner and Hemsworth. I think Bardem would be fine, but I agree that it would be hard not to just see him as Chigurh again.

I think the problem with the Terminator franchise is simply that the storyline got wrapped up in the second film and now there's nowhere left to go. It's the same issue facing Star Wars, the storyline got wrapped up in Return of the Jedi.

Arnold straight up slams the fourth film: "IT SUCKED."

But though he's trying to make us forget...he was involved in that one as well!

Would love to see someone mash this up with Bale's confused interview face, immediately followed by a clip of Bale's T:S on-set rant...

:word:

I remember Arnold saying how he took his family to watch Salvation when it came out and how they all really liked it. Can't find an article on it anymore though.

Arnold cheated on his beautiful wife with an ugly maid (among countless others) so what does he know about quality? :cwink:

Neither of them were lookers IMO. A world champion athlete and movie star like Arnold should be getting super model level pie.

The rights will revert to you in 2019...
Apparently there's some truth to that. It's a little bit of an untested legal area, but I think that my understanding is that they come back to me as the original creator. I don't know exactly what I'll do with that. I'm not really thinking in those terms right now.

It might be hard to detach yourself then.
If I was going to get back into the Terminator world, it would have to be a very broad stroke reconceptualization. If you think about what Terminator is really about, it's really about the dark side of technology, and it's about humans allowing their technology to move us into a trans-human world, so it's cyborgs, cybernetics, all that sort of thing. I would broadly reinterpret what that meant if I was to get excited about it. The one thing I like about the rights reverting is that I don't think in the new series they're telling a new story, I don't think there's a plan to remake the first film. I hate remakes of movies. Why remake Psycho? That's ridiculous, just watch Psycho. So why remake The Terminator? Just watch The Terminator!

:hmm

I love it when people literally take the words right out of my mouth, its such a fulfilling feeling. That second paragraph just bought a smile to my face. It's Cameron's baby after all only him and him alone will understand what Terminator is all about. Technology ain't no joke .

So we might not be getting anymore Terminator movies after 2018? Interesting.

^ Some would say we might not be getting anymore Terminator movies after 2015. :p

But what's even more interesting is Cameron kicking around the idea of going back and doing a reinvention of it. I doubt it would ever happen, but if it did... man oh man.

Still.

Arnold's family has had experience smiling and lying about things in order to save face.

Or they actually enjoyed it and Arnold is now saying it sucked because it's the popular thing to do.

The hatred in this thread is depressing.

Saying it sucked isn't the popular thing to do. He (and we) are saying it sucked because it sucked.

And Terminator: Jennacyss very likely will too, no matter how much you want to bury your head in the sand.

I wouldn't say it was ''hatred''. A lot of us just don't like what we're seeing and hearing about this movie. There's a difference.

I keep forgetting when this comes out. When it was first announced,I liked the concept of it and Arnold's role but then the rest of the cast was revealed and of course the trailers hitting.

The original film is still an overall great classic,Judgement Day is one of my favorite movies in general,I actually found 3&Salvation a bit underrated but this one is just looking meh. I'll still go see it because of Arnold and it's a new Terminator movie but it won't be on opening day!

You know they're going to release a Terminator movie in 2029, right? No way they'd pass that opportunity up.

I love the part in the trailer where Emilia is like, "We can stop Judgment Day from happening!"

The next line should be, "Until the next time we have to stop Judgment Day from happening!"

:pal: Nice one Nardz

p.s slightly off topic but there's some nice Daredevil avatars about . Great to see it getting well recieved .

Yeah, that always make me chuckle.

So when Arnold and his family said they liked it, obviously they were lying and NOW they're telling the truth. I suppose it makes sense if that jives with your opinion.

I'm not burying my head in the sand, I'm saving my opinion for when I actually see the movie. Crazy idea, I know.
