Terminator: Genisys - Part 5

How far are we away from the "It's so bad that it's kinda good" territory?

We were there in the first trailer with all the resistance guys staring up at Kyle Reese's junk...

But Honestly its not looking good. But From the beginning I was not a fan of this and wanted a continuation from Salvation, seeing more of the future war with Connor leading the Resistance. My opinion, Arnold is no longer needed as the face of the franchise. I've wanted to see the future war with Connor and the Resistance since watching the very first Terminator film years ago. Looks like I'll never get the Terminator film that I wanted, hence why I at least felt that Salvation was at least trying to build up to that point.

I wanted too a continuation from T4 Salvation
But Genisys completely reboots the franchise, not retconning like Xmen Days of Future Past
I noticed that when I saw they didnt add Kate Brewster in this movie

This just looks like an almighty mess in every department, the story makes zero sense to me, the SFX look shoddy at best and T2 effects look superior for a film made 24 years earlier. Have no interest in this whatsover.

OMG. Day and night. Day and night!

Part of the problem here is that the rights to the franchise got tossed around between production companies, each place with executives thinking they know what's best for the franchise with zero care for continuity.

Hemdale
Pacific Western
Orion Pictures
Carolco Pictures
Lightstorm Entertainment
Studio Canal
Tri-Star Pictures
Warner Brothers
Columbia Pictures
C2 Pictures
Intermedia
IMF
The Halcyon Company
Sony Pictures
Wonderland Sound and Vision
Paramount Pictures
Skydance Productions

That's pretty insane for just 5 films. The only major studios that haven't gotten a crack at this franchise yet is Universal and Disney. Maybe it's their turn next.

There's only true continuity between T1 & T2 (for obvious reasons). Both films form a complete narrative.

After that, each one is stand alone, with a different creative teams (failed) attempt to continue a story that was clearly done and over with.

This is pretty much the end of the line. If they fail here, it's over.

Everything after T2 felt like bad fanfiction anyway, and from what we already know of this one, it feels like the worst fanfiction of them all.

Meh....I really enjoyed Salvation, nowhere near as good as the first two, but I found it to be very good and enjoyed it very much.
I find Salvation to be a very enjoyable popcorn blockbuster film. It's like how I have no shame enjoying the first two Transformers films, Fast and the Furious, Iron Man 2, etc. They're not great films, or even all that good, but they're at least entertaining if you throw your brain out, which is one of the most important aspects of film.

Another benefit to Salvation is that it at least tried. While it is deserving of criticisms, it still deserves credit for trying to be an enjoyable film It at least tried to do something different. It at least tried to get a good cast. I honestly buy Edward Furlong, Christian Bale, and Michael Edwards playing the same character who ages over time. I buy Anton Yelchin being a younger Kyle Reese. I like Bryce Dallas Howard as Kate Connor. And I actually like Sam Worthington.

Terminator three was horrible up until the last 15 minutes. To each there own I suppose.
I'm in the same boat as well. Terminator 3 was horrendous, but the ending was amazing. It had a lot of good ideas that were executed horribly.

I wont pass final judgment until I see this film. But Honestly its not looking good. I can understand a reboot considering that Salvation didn't meet expectations, but this just looks like they aren't even trying.

So I finally saw the new trailer and it made me recreate the vomit scene from Team America.

I agree that there really isn't a need for any of the post T2 sequels, but I'm still happy that they decide to change things up timeline-wise.

My biggest disappointment with T3 was that after the epic T2 where they prevented Judgement Day, we basically find out that it was all for nothing and the world goes under anyways.. yay, way to ruin the good feeling we had after T2. It's basically the equivalent of what Alien 3 did to Aliens.

With Salvation, I honestly felt no connection to begin with. The appeal to me was always that we had to prevent Judgement Day from happening, because if it did happen, the machines would wipe out our species. There is nothing exciting IMO about the machines vs humans war, because at that point the world had already been destroyed and we had lost.

Exactly my feelings as well.

I'm one of the rare people who think there wasn't even a need for T2. Yeah, the T-1000 was cool, but I thought the original Terminator said all there needed to be said. And I didn't like bratty John Conners or Sarah Conners going psycho and acting so extreme and 90's that it's like she just walked out of an 'Image' comic book. :o But I know I'm in the minority with that opinion, and I don't wish to argue it.

If we ARE making sequels, I don't see Genisys as a much greater evil than T3 or Salvation. My biggest problem is the casting. Kyle Reese is supposed to be a wiry scrapper, not some jacked meathead like Jai Courtney. They have to preserve the Ahnuld terminator exactly even making excuses for his age, but they couldn't have cast someone who fit Michael Biehn's profile even a little bit??

I never had too big problem with that but what you're saying makes a lot of sense to me and is pretty much correct. That one line in particular Arnold says in T3, "You only postponed it, judgment day is inevitable". Kind of goes completely against "No fate but what me make" doesn't it, which was a theme i've loved since i was four.

The biggest issue I have after T2 was that Judgement Day was made inevitable no matter what happened. Which completely diminishes the series as a whole. As Zantera said, everything becomes worthless. This is why I chose to ignore everything after T2 because I like the idea that all the struggles and losses the characters had to endure meant something. I don't know what Cameron would have done for T3 had he gone through with it, as definitive an ending as T2 has I think he would have more than ensured T3 ended with Judgement Day being prevented for good.

Just watched the new trailer... the effects look atrocious.

The only times I've really honestly been blown away by CGI, like, an actual mouth-opening reaction, is from the following films:

Jurassic Park
T2: Judgment Day
Interstellar
Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

And that's honestly it. I don't think I'm missing any others...

I'd personally add he first Transformers experience to that pile as well as some LOTR and Starwars, but for their time.

That split screen floating around is perfect. It's a combinations of things but James Cameron's lighting(especially in the 90's) had a fidelity to it. There is contract and texture and leather...all of these sequels sequels look 'soft' and phoney. It's pretty annoying

For all the grief that Salvation gets, I give this design and execution a lot of credit. It looked great on screen and remained restrained. While we're still a bit away from release, there's just poor execution and design, doesn't have much to do with the MPAA rating.

I didn't think 'Salvation' was as bad as everyone said.

Not that I thought it was good or necessary. And I'm not going to ever watch it again, probably. But I'd give it a B-, whereas everyone was making out like it was a D or an F.

Salvation was one of the biggest disappointments I've ever had at the theatre. While we know this film will be crap, the marketing for Salvation was fantastic, and it really looked like it was going to do justice to this franchise.

But once the movie started...yeah. :csad:

This looks like straight-up ****, and I bet we'll leave the theatre with that same belief.
