Terminator: Genisys - Part 6

actually, in the very end, it does fall apart, because there is a final point that cannot be explained away even in the events of Terminator 1.

There HAS to have been an 'original' timeline > before actual timetravel.

No.

There does not have to be an original timeline. Not only that but there cannot be an original timeline other than what we see. An original timeline implies the timeline is evolving ... evolving against what? A dimension of super-time? No.

What the first Terminator did is exactly correct.

Read my post, and the link, and reread them until you understand.

Mathematics is not like art, there is one right answer and many wrong answers. Cameron got it right in the first film.

I haven't been following this film, but have seen skeptical/cautious reactions. What is the consensus at the moment? Is this shaping up to be a dud or something decent?

Don't forget Skynet as well.

Skynet is created -> Skynet causes Judgment Day -> After long war with humans, Skynet sends Terminator back through time to eliminate resistance leader's mother -> Terminator is destroyed in Cyberdyne factory -> Cyberdyne takes remaining parts of Terminator for research -> Skynet is created

However, do the same time travel rules apply if a person's consciousness is sent back through time as oppose to the body, i.e. X-Men: DOFP and Edge of Tomorrow?

Same rules apply. Consciousness is just something the material brain does. It is part of the natural world and not separate from it.

DoFP and EoT are ok and good because theyre fiction, they are internally consistent which is good. I just laud Terminator 1 and Interstellar for doing things exactly right.

That's the most pretentious thing I've ever read.

Terminator and Interstellar are fiction too.

One doesn't need to reread a post and refer to some website to understand time travel as it relates to Terminator.

Dud.

We are discussing how time travel would actually work logically.

And yes people do need to read that website or equivalent if they want to understand. It is not intuitive at all and many of the sharpest minds of the twentieth century (Godel, Einstein, etc) put in substantial effort to simplify things.

At this point, things are worked out, and Cameron got it right the first time. It is a neat plus.

Is it the very first movie to get time travel right?

Best Picture front-runner.

I know Schlosser pointed this out earlier, but I still find it kind of funny how Sarah Connor pretty much knows she has to bang Kyle Reese at this point. Like when she says they've been prepping for his arrival, she does know what she has to do, right?

Yeah that's gross.

The way all people everywhere are created literally everyday is SO gross.

Its gross because its essentially pre-arranged sex that she has no say in because its her "destiny"

In the first Terminator film she had no idea who Kyle Reese was or who her son's father would be

Meh. When the fate of the world is involved a lot of everyday society's mores and norms probably go out the window I imagine. No one said birthing the savior of mankind would all be done in good taste. :sly:

Do we know that Sarah knows about Kyle being Johns father? Maybe the Guardian just told her that there's another T-800 and a soldier coming in 1984, but not... the rest. *shrug*

There is no fate but what we make for ourselves.

Now that the timeline has changed and they're in
2017
, she really doesn't have to do anything but stop the machines.

Sarah is now younger than John would be in 2017 (John would be 32). If Judgment Day still happens, she could end up leading the resistance herself.

Part of what makes the original film is that it has a sincere and convincing love story within it, rather than an arranged marriage.

Who cares about characters when you can have... uh... weird time stuff! And infinite alternate timelines! And oh look Arnold's head pasted on a stunt man! See? See?

I don't know why, but this made me laugh really hard...

And Twelve Monkeys! Eveybody forgets about Twelve Monkeys. No alternate timelines BS, just a plain good 'ol closed time-loop.

I always thought that a 3rd Terminator film should follow the rules of T-1 where the Judgement Day ends up happening, even though everyone tried to stop it, and John Connor was always going to be Kyle's son, instead of Kyle pretty much retconing his son out of existence and replacing him with a son of his oun that shares the same name as John.
