James Cameron Talks Terminator's Future

The movement on the new film – or films, given that a trilogy is in the works – is partially inspired by the fact that the rights to the characters and ideas revert to Cameron in 2019. It doesn’t sound like he’s ready to re-visit the world any time soon, though. “I haven't really thought that far ahead yet. I've got plenty of time to think about it. It might be fun to completely re-invent the franchise,” he admits. “A lot has to do with what happens with it in the meantime, people may have Terminator fatigue.”

Can you even begin to imagine!!?

We are living in a world of new star wars films with the original cast, batman v superman and a ridley Scott alien prequel.

I think the T-1000 impaling Xander Berkley's character through his mouth would have been enough (that sound was hardcore), as well as the blood squibs, finger through the eye, and other T-1000 impalings. Also Arnold's wounds in the third act too (compare his face to Sam Worthington's in Salvation, much more "meat" and blood compared to the pg-13 one)

Yeah, the T1000 didn't have any restrictions on who he could kill in persuit of John Connor. But most of the movie focused on the actions of the T800, John, and Sara Connor. I'm not saying T2 was non violent. I'm just saying that it was LESS violent than it COULD have been.

Maybe if there were a rating in between PG-13 and R, T2 would land there. As it is, I would put it on the lower end of an R rating. A soft R rating, rather than a hard R bordering on NC-17.

Wait, there's nothing between PG and R in America? I can't believe that never occurred to me before. Here in Australia we have both M and MA15+ in-between them.

There is G, PG, PG-13, and R. There is also the occasionally seen NR for not rated and NC-17 which is seen pretty rare these days.

In Canada, after PG we have 14A instead of PG-13, and then 18A instead of R. R is considered a much harsher rating here, more like NC-17, and is rarely used for film releases. Anything considered rated R in the States is considered 18A here.

So, Whats that Teddy for?

You are joking right? Every single film ever made is "less violent" then could be, because there is no such thing as a limit on violence.

The scene when they get the cop car, when Arnie throws the cop into the pillar, would get the film an R-rating. The sound is brutal and bone chilling, and you see it all. If they made the film PG-13 now, you couldn't show that scene or use that sound effect.

And that one of the things that makes T2 so brilliant. It is completely visceral. The scene when Arnie clears the building without killing anyone is painful. You can feel it. Same when Sarah is breaking bones. Dyson's death. Sarah's attempt on his life. When Arnie reveals his arm. Sarah's vision. Sarah's injury in the elevator. The moment when Sarah is checking John for injury feels real because the film is dangerous. It depicts violence, and doesn't hold back.

Even if you discount the brutal beatings between the two Terminators, there is plenty.

I've probably watched T2 over 50 times, it's an R rated movie. Don't let the big budget and gloss fool you.

Child's play Sundance. I have probably watched it over a 100 times. That big budget, the gloss and the toys fooled my mother into letting me watch it as a little one. :woot:

Butch, I'm probably way underestimating how much I've watched it. :oldrazz:

Also my parents let me watch Robocop, T2 and Temple of Doom without any hesitation. Thank goodness for VHS.

Yep. The T-1000 was stabbing a whole bunch of people though out the movie.

I think making a movie about a robot that wants to murder a woman before she gives birth and then a sequel in which another robot wants to murder an adolescent boy is inherently mature material.

I do not think it is "just" a single aspect that makes Terminator 2 R-Rated (unlike T3 where it is mainly just the hand through the chest scene): stabbings, flesh burnt away by the atomic bomb (incl. dead children) accompied by gut-wrenching screams, blood squibs, the general tone, Terminator ripping his arm off and getting his head squashed, injured, impaled (yeah, just a robot but...), sexual exploitation, Sarah smashing the guards knee, the general ruthlessness of the Terminators, child endangerment, whatever...

But the only thing people remember is Edward Furlong and a smiling Terminator...

I saw Terminator, Alien, Robocop, and Die Hard when I was really young. And somehow I didn't grow up to be a violent criminal...

i remember everything about my first viewing. where i was,time,.....

Same here. Praise VHS. :woot:

It is amazing how you, SPIDEY and I avoided it considering what we watched as children. :hehe:

Heck Arnold shooting that innocent security guard in the legs (repeatedly) alone would probably get the movie a PG-13 rating, leaving out all the other stuff. Especially with the guard clearly screaming/crying in pain in the background.

give us 5 scenes. yeah lets say 5 scenes from 2005 to 2012. that will do. thank you.

-Joker burning a man alive atop a pile of money.
-Joker's demented terrorist video/murder of the fake Batman (with his screams of terror).
-Bane breaking necks/spines/choking people to death.
-Most of the Scarecrow scenes in Batman Begins.
-The suicide scene in Inception.

I can go on if you'd like.

Me too. It is almost as if children can tell the difference between fiction and reality :o:cwink:

I watched tons of horror movies when I was younger. Heck I once spent an entire Saturday marathoning all seven SAW films. Yet I didn't grow up to be a psychotic serial killer, fancy that.
