I was referring to a few things. I mean take for example the stick Bale has taken. Now I'm not a fanboy of his by any means, for one he should be challenging himself much like Sean Penn has challenged himself. Milk showed that he's a lot more than just a tough guy actor. So I can't stress that enough, I'm not a Bale fanboy.
However, I really think he was harshly treated by critics and fans a like. John Connor was a secondary character in Terminator Salvation, and one that wasn't greatly written. Bale didn't have a lot to work with, and I thought he did the best he could with the material in front of him. Now you may say "what about the constant shouting? There's no excuse for that." I don't think that's a fair criticism either because if you look at the scenes in which he is "shouting", such as when he's on to base after the opening action scene and when he's letting Marcus go in the woods, what is happening in these scenes? Open warfare and combat where gunshot sounds, bombs and choppers are all contributing to make a large amount of racket in your ears. Realistically speaking Connor is shouting because his ears are likely shot from all the large noise. That's why he's shouting, he doesn't realise that he's shouting.
As for the film itself, judging it on its own two feet it was a good film. Certainly one of the better action films I have seen in the last few years. The problem though is that a lot of people are not judging TS as a standalone film and are comparing the film to Cameron's films. Now that's your right, you are allowed to expect a certain level of quality from a franchise that you are greatly fond of. However for me personally I think it was greatly unfair to expect McG to produce a level of quality akin to what Cameron produced. That being said I don't think McG did the best he could have done. Instead of ordering rewrites to an already horrific script he should have had the courage to rip it up and tell Nolan to start a fresh. Again though, maybe McG's hands were tied and didn't have the influence to say to the studio "this film has to be delayed as the script is not good enough." So yeah, I don't know, it's hard to judge McG because I don't know the facts.
