From October to December 2001, Marvel published a 10-issue series called The 100 Greatest Marvels of All Time, listing what readers had voted over the past year were the 100 greatest Marvel comics of all time.
----------------

Cool! I never heard of this until now, so what do you guys think of the list! It's dominated by Spider-Man and X-Men Comics....check it out!:spidey: :marv: :thing: :doom:

Well, personally, I thought it was like every other fan voted list where popularity overshadowed actual quality

For instance, I won't even get into a debate about why FF #1, X-Men #1, etc. #1 should or shouldn't be on there (they shouldn't. They're only on there because they're the "firsts" and not because they're actually good stories. Ok, nm, I DID go into that debate...), but what about X-Men #2 and 3? Why are they on the list? Have you ever actually read those issues? They're the first appearence of the Blob and the Vanisher, respectively, two of the lamest villains in Marvel history. And really if you've ever actually read those issues, well, they're not really that good.

Look at the selection of FF titles as well. #232 is on the list because "First issue written and drawn by John Byrne". Not because it was the BEST issue done by Byrne (which would probably be #258) but just because it's the FIRST.

And what about the Lee/Kirby era of FF? #1, #18 (First Super Skrull), Annual #3 (Wedding), #100, #12 (first Thing vs. the Hulk), #5 (First Dr. Doom), and #48 (First Silver Surfer). They're all "event issues", and that's the primary reason they were voted onto the list, not because they were actually BETTER then the others. I mean, jesus, have you ever actually read FF #51 "This Man, This Monster"? It was an absolute masterpeice, Kirby and Lee at there best. But it doesn't make the list because nothing "special" happens in it, it's just a great story.

Of the people who voted on this list, I honestly wonder how many of them actually read the issues they voted for, or just knew them because of the "big events" that happened in them

oh, and I'm an advocate of the Ultimate line most of the time, but Ultimate X-Men #1 coming in at #12 isn't just laughable, it's sad

Yah, Amazing fantasy #15 is a good story but it can't compare some other stories of spider-man himself such as one of the Master Planner Issues, and loads of others on the list.

But all of the stories that i've read on the list range from ok to really amazing!

I agree that some of those classics are only on the list for the sheer fact that they're #1 issues. For example, I own a copy of Silver Surfer #1 (1st printing too) and despite the fact that I enjoy it out of simple nostalgia, its story really doesn't hold up to a lot of other great tales.

Most comic readers don't have access to a lotta classic tales, not like they do today. So I'm pretty sure it's by big event alone. Maybe if Marvel had pushed the Essential books sooner like they are now that list woulda been very different. Maybe.

A pretty solid list.

Ock's first appearance, the Master Planner saga, and the death of Captain Stacy are all fantastic Doc Ock stories

And Amazing Fantasy #15 got number 1. Way to go Stan

I think Uncanny 143 could be way higher on the list. Doom AND Murderworld, you say?

I do wish the Wolverine wherein Logan was attacked by the 47 Ronin was there. Or at least the one with "Wolvie vs. Shingen; round 2"

And I think it's bizarre how Uncanny #2 got to be no. 38. The Vanisher out-populared Gambit, Hawkeye, Havok and the Juggernaut.

Judgements like these need the perspective of time. It's like saying this years blockbuster movie is the greatest in the history of cinema, but not knowing how it's going to hold up over time. Gone with the Wind might be kicking it's ass in two years.
Best Marvel Ever?
The Kid Who Collected Spider-Man

I can't believe Thunderbolts #1 isn't on there. That book was amazing. No one had any idea what was coming, and them BAM! Masters of Evil. That's simply priceless.
