How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

First time watching this - I see I didn't miss much...

Maybe it's because I didn't grow up with this and have no emotional attachment to it but I thought this was terrible...

The original animated special is simplicity itself: we never find out exactly why the Grinch hates Christmas, nor do we find out exactly why the Whos love it. However, when the Grinch finds out that the Whos appreciate Christmas for more than its commercial aspects, his heart "grows three sizes" and he returns all their Christmas trappings. For their part, the Whos forgive the Grinch for his transgressions and welcome him into their holiday celebrations with open arms. It's a lovely little story about the healing powers of faith, inclusion, and kindness.

The feature film, on the other hand, takes everything that was resonant about the special and ****s all over it. In the live action version the Whos are a competitive, materialistic society who seem to care more about having the best seasonal displays and acquiring all the latest baubles (the movie explicitly states how many Who products are discarded and end up in the Grinch's garbage dump) than the spiritual aspects of Christmas. And, because this was a 2000 release, the industry by then had started demanding backstory and character motivation. This reveals the Whos to be a cruel, intolerant society: to be honest, I found myself rooting for the Grinch and felt the Whos deserved to have their Christmas spectacularly defiled. My reaction kind of goes against the intentions of the original special, no?

It's disappointing because I was really looking forward to this and was convinced I would love it. Again, no offense towards those who grew up with this and cherish it, but I'll gladly stick with the animated special, thanks...

I got dragged to see this when it first came out and thought it was awful, too. You're right in that the original cartoon is perfect itself. It holds up to repeated viewings even now.

Two things the 2000 version has going for it; Rick Baker’s incredible makeup and Jim Carrey’s performance. Also happy that it’s all practical sets (a 2025 version would be on the Volume and suffer for it).

I understand the story issues, of course and nothing holds a candle to the original but I have a soft spot.

But if you thought this was terrible, the 2018 version is even worse that sucks out any life or menace of the Grinch. They even had a perfect voice in Benedict Cumberbatch but instead he’s doing some horrible high pitched “performance”.

I actually considered watching Grinch '18 but if it's even worse than Grinch '00:
