Why would Peter fight crime before Uncle Ben's death? That would make Ben's death completely unnecessary, from a character standpoint.
Here's what I posted in another Thread, when we had that discussion.
I can buy it. Imagine you're a guy with super powers, swinging around the city and suddenly you see a guy stealing something. Since Spidey was a bit more of a jerk at first, he'd probably think this is the perfect opportunity to have fun with someone. I could also see it as taking out his frustration, from being the target of countless bullies at his school. He can't beat Flash up as Peter, but a thug is someone who deserves it without him having to feel guilty about it.
He could fight crime, but just be a total ***hole about it. It could for him be more about beating someone up who deserves it, than stopping criminals because it's the right thing to do.
