The Atheism Thread - Part 6

If someone yelled at me while I was sleeping peacefully, they would get a swift kick where the sun don't shine.

And then I would go back to sleep.

But when that would-be rescuer starts telling me that dinosaurs and man coexisted and that the biblical story of Noah is 100% factually accurate, my tendency will be to close the blinds and go back to bed. :cwink:

Well, the movie "Noah" I wouldn't say is 100% factually correct.

I'm referring specifically to the biblical account.

This is like saying, "Well, the movie 'Star Wars' I wouldn't say is 100% factually correct.'"

It could be 100% correct considering we have no way of knowing what could be true or not since it takes place in the distant past in a galaxy far far away. I'm hoping the first 3/4ths of the prequel movies aren't true but the rest could be fine.

Yes, I know you were, I just didn't want to go there since you have already made it clear on your position.

Guys let's keep it pleasant, this ain't the Jesus thread where anything goes.

I would assume he meant that someone... needs to take a shower. *Ahem!*

Don't make me get the Super Soakers.

It burns!

As a side note, I tried to type that in all caps and it wouldn't let me.

The persecution complex exhibited by many Christians is as ridiculous, and has similar motivations to whites screaming about "reverse racism" or Men's Rights Activists in general who see challenges to their wide hegemonic power as being the same as being powerless and discriminated against.

"Persecuted" looks ridiculously overdramatic and paranoid, and I get tired of the Christian Right claiming persecution just because their beliefs aren't the law.

Love both of these posts. Reminds me of an episode of American Dad where Stan is bemoaning the fact that white man only have "most of the power" these days. (High-brow, intellectual stuff, I know).

Too often Christians confuse the concept of freedom of religion with the concept that their religion should be codified into law. (People misunderstand the vast majority of the 1st amendment, but that's another discussion)

Christians aren't better than non Christians and Christians don't say that. Perhaps a few may but I don't know any personally. It is Christ who makes us who we are. Christians humble themselves and give all praise and glory to God, not themselves. In fact, I think there is even a scripture in there that says Christians will be judged harder than non Christians.

Christians don't tell others how to live but rather try to help others escape the coming judgement and punishment that they/we believe will take place. This is no different than a house being on fire and a person is trapped. Wouldn't you want to try and save that person? Exactly what a Christian is doing.

I really like the bulk of this post, because I think you represent the vast majority of Christians: decent, normal people who just go about their own business and don't cast judgment upon others.

But the fire analogy is troubling to me because it starts to cross the line from "live and let live" to "live the way I deem correct." Christianity is not secret. We're all well aware of it, and some of us choose not to participate. You should really respect that choice.

You can't do an all caps post. You have to have a word or two that is written normally to offset it.

On a slightly off topic note... Has anyone else noticed the great voice cast that they've put together for COSMOS' animated sections? I noticed Carey Elwes and Sir Patrick's voices immediately.

The last episode where they talked about how it is impossible for the Universe to be only 6,000-7,000 years old was reminiscent of a section in Neal Stephenson's ANATHEM. In that book a real salt of the Earth type outdoorsman comes to the same conclusions as science because he was always observing the erosion of the canyon walls he would raft by on a river. He knew that it would be impossible for the canyon to have been formed the way the religious on his world believed. (ANATHEM takes place on an alternate Universe Earth.)

You're correct. I'll look at it as being asleep to the eternal fire I believe in. If a house was on fire and a person was inside and was asleep, would you still not go in and try to save them even though they are unaware of the danger?

Except you know, that in this case people are fine living their lives according to their own values and there is no evidence or indication that the danger you believe in exists.

Does anyone know of any books or documentaries that claim that the Abrahamic religions were based on earlier religions?
