The Batman General News & Discussion Thread - Part 2

Zaslav wants to copy the mcu. Making a Batman movie that dark again is something he’s not going to do.

I'm scared as F for Dune 3's chances...
Honestly, just wish they'd add Messiah in as an additional 45 minute appendix to Dune Part II. Then let Denis be the EP for Children Of Dune/God Empire Of Dune adaptions as 6-8 episode seasons on HBO.

I guess if The Batman 2 doesnt make at least 600million, part 3 will get canceled or gets a lesser budget. So if reeves is smart he creates a big cliffhanger in Batman 2.

Reeves already had a tight budget considering their location use, the aesthetics of the film, Covid-of it all, and such.

He maxed the **** out of that 185-ish Million. The dude is a pro.

The sequel was never going to be as dark anyway with Bruce and Alfred’s relationship getting tighter, the humour that will naturally come out of the public Wayne scenes, Batman not seeking pure vengeance anymore, only criminals fearing him this time.

A sequel to Dune 2 won’t happen for like another 10 years. Denis said he doesn’t want to touch that until Chalamet is much older.

On the Dune stuff I am not sure how much WB actually contributes to the financing of Dune? I forget what the deal is but I believe it is primarily Legendary that carries that burden.

Look, these movies and the kind of creative control Reeves has always felt fragile to me. It isn't how big blockbusters are made anymore. Zaszlav is an obvious fox in the chicken coop at WB and this is the most deranged thing I have ever seen a major studio do, it does not sound like a good combo to me.

That all being said The Batman sequel was greenlit by the Discovery lunatics. It doesn't mean it will happen, obviously, but it isn't something that predates their regime. On top of that a sequel to The Batman being a somewhat lighter, more crowd pleasing movie feels... like it might have happened regardless of interference given Bruce clearly growing more toward that type of Batman.

The HBO Max stuff I am most worried about. Stuff like the Penguin or the already existing Peacemaker (despite Gunn's protestations) and Harley Quinn (which feels like such an obvious chopping block show even though I will not countenance the thought of it meeting a premature end.)

I am still worried about the spin off shows, although I’ll just adapt. But I’m not worried about the next movie. A third movie may not happen regardless of who’s in charge. If the sequel doesn’t connect on a grand scale then a third would get canned anyway. Or they continue with Pattinson but without Reeves. But Part 2? There’s no reason for them to pull the plug. Maybe Reeves and Zaslav will have a tug of war on run time or tone but I have a feeling Matt is already aware that he needs to tighten up the sequel and deliver more warmth between characters. I’m sure it’s the plan anyway. The Batman was done on purpose, so a sequel can earn that warmth.

I hear the Keaton cameo at the end of the Penguin HBO Max show has been canned.
What I heard was the Keats is watching tv with his doggo Ace by his side, he’s glaring at the news talking about how the police thought Oz shot Carmine dead. The Keats quietly grumbles “hope he finds his parents”. And that’s it. Makes sense to cut it but who tf am i?

I think we can call safely say that the spin off shows probably aren't happening now. Sounds like Zaslav is entirely uninterested in scripted shows moving forward, and HBO Max looks to be under threat itself - let alone any of the shows that were supposed to be on it.

I still think The Batman 2 is happening, because it was greenlit by WBD... but I'm not anywhere near as confident about the project as I was before all this came out.

If Zaslav starts interfering with what Reeves wants to do, then Matt will walk. He's done it before.

idk if this really confirms that considering Batgirl got canned literally for tax reasons. That was a 90 million dollar movie. Zaslav says he doesn't want DC movies going straight to HBO Max. He didn't say anything about shows. That's kinda just a question mark right now until Zaslav either does something or the shows are out

The earnings report on Thursday might shed some more light, though the rumours about a merger of HBO Max and Disco Plus don't bode well.

Ultimately just depends on what that mashup would look like, in terms of shows. I somewhat doubt it's just gonna be Disco Plus 2.0. Could just mean the shows that would be on HBO Max go on this mashup

It’s getting worse. Bye, bye, HBO Max. One of the best streaming service out there. ☹️

I mean did people think that wouldn't happen? I said it when the rumors of the deal first started. It doesn't make sense to have 2 services...especially since the streaming model has been proven to be way behind where everyone thought it was. (Netflix is a harbinger)

We have to wait to see how this all plays out, but damn Killar really screwed the pooch and Zazlov is cutting bait. Methinks the books were downright disasterous.

Didn't get it in Canada but we got the series they produced on Crave. Really bad situation, HBO Max was putting out a lot of great stuff and had enormous potential for the future.

well. joker sequel will release in fall 2024. weird because the first one hit theaters year after filming started. meanwhile this will release 2 years after. also, The Batman sequel is probably bound for early 2025 and if not, it's probably getting pushed to 2026 with two avengers movies cluttering 2025. but maybe they have big balls and release it next to one of the avengers films. or one of the avengers films moves.

It still could but they are going to completely reshuffle the deck first. The next few months should be interesting because we are likely to learn what a mess AT&T and the former regime made out of WB and HBO Max. I bet they were burning through money Netflix style and they were already behind the 8 ball anyways with the cruddy launch.

We are probably going to get a nice window into why the streaming model isn't as lucrative as some think it is.

Gut feeling based on nothing but I bet, much like many of us, they thought they could make a killing making streaming content and get ahead of the curve. They probably figured take some losses for a bit, build the subs base and coast after that. (We all kind of thought it) That can (emphasis on can) work with TV shows but movies it is very very dicey. You need a lot of blockbuster theater cash to fill the coffers still to make it work. The HBO Max slate decision (one I agreed with because COVID screwed lots of things up) killed any chance it could work though and Warner Discovery basically just walked away from it. You have to kill the cancer before you can recover.

I can't say if this is good or bad, but I don't doubt Zazlov is going to make this all profitable in some capacity. It is going to be painful though. This is gonna all look very different in 6 months...we will see if it is for the good or the worse.

Don’t think Joker is filming until 2023.

I’m seeing this as a good thing but apparently I’m in the minority.
