For how the performance and film 'shaped' my viewing experience, Donnie Darko (it was like practically watching a documentary on myself), but for his performance, Nightcrawler, in terms of a role 'consuming' the actor and seeing someone allow a role to swallow them.

Funnily enough, I just watched Nightcrawler for the first time last night and have just chanced upon this thread - I thought he was outstanding in it. Absolutely outstanding.

His performance in Nightcrawler was outstanding, but my vote is Brokeback Mountain. It is a more demanding role.

Personally I think he’s a better actor than Gosling.

I think I need to visit some of his older work, because lately I just don't see the appeal. The guy looks and sounds bored out of his mind half the time.

Definitely agree with that. Tbh, Gosling is one of those 'stars' I don't really get.

Gosling is a good actor but with limited range.

On the other hand, Jake is amazing with incredible range.. Havent seen his performance in Brokeback Mountain but my gosh, he was mind-blowing in Nightcrawler.

Gosling seems to play the same character in just about every role

Gosling's 'range' is that he is the equivalent to a latter day Steve McQueen, he has one line of character, and the characters settle up or down from neutral but he's damn effective at it. All emotion, rage, sadness, loss, anger is all behind the eyes, one can't see it or isn't allowed in as easily too see it.

Where as JG is a 'vocal' expressionist of those emotions, they are different actors with different beats but equally effective in the roles they are given.

I like Gosling and Jake, but I'd say that Jake is the better actor of the two. Anyway, I went with Nightcrawler as his best performance.

Jake's best performance will come in that Villeneuve prison escape film, which is in limbo cause of that giant worm sand movie.
