Rumor running around currently is Zooey Deschanel (500 Days of Summer) is being considered for the role of Betty Brant, which the director feels would have a larger role.

Betty was around when Peter was in High School in ASM. He had a crush on her when he first started taking pictures for the Bugle. Her and Liz Allen were in the first love triangle in the comics for Peter. Though, neither really ended up going anywhere.

I didn't think they were romantically involved until later. I don't remember Betty dating a High School Peter Parker...that would be weird.

They never dated then, but Peter had a crush on her. Which I think she found innocent. Then Peter asked her to a dance, and it got awkward.

Yeah...that is why I am perplexed as to why Betty will have a larger role with a High School Petey. They don't do anything. It would be the same at Betty in the Raimi films. Peter coming in and smiling, being awkward and Betty just grinning back. Please no 30 year old Betty Brant dating a 17 year old Peter Parker and no 17 year old Betty Brant. That is why I am wondering if this movie is even in High School and in college instead. It would make no sense for a High School based movie with Betty Brant having a more prominent role.

I think it is okay. Betty was kind of being a big sister to Peter back in those days. Looking out for him from JJJ's wrath. If that is what they're going for, I see no problem. But, Betty had those moments in Raimi's films, too. So it is not like Betty was useless in his films.

But Zooey looks exactly the same age as Garfield so the big sister thing would be weird imo. She always looked older than Peter in the comics. Betty to Peter was like a high school senior thinking his teacher that is a few years older than him is hot. It's weird for the teacher to hook up with the kid while he is still in High School but when he goes to college and grows up a bit then they get together.

But yeah I didn't think Betty was useless in Raimi's films but for a larger role I automatically think love interest because it happened in the comics. But, this film being set in high school makes that aspect a bit weird.

Say, I'm not big on Spidey's history, but wasn't Betty his girlfriend from when he was in high school ? Weren't they dating when Doc Ock killed her brother, and Peter still in high school at that point?

That is fine. It is fine to think your teacher is hot. But a 17 year old High School kid in a relationship with his 25ish year old teacher is weird. It is weird period when high school kids are dating people nearly a decade older than them. If they are going the route of Betty being a love interest and not an addition to his spank bank, then Peter doesn't need to be in high school.

I really don't remember...someone would have to have all the comics to look. I just really don't think that they would have gone this route since the 60s were a lot more wholesome than today.
