just saw Bloc Party less than a half-mile from my house.
for free.
pretty much.
here.:
when i moved here 5 years ago that's what it looked like, at least.
It was an old community pool established in the '30s that had outlived its usefulness, But had never been bull dozed. I hopped the fence one night to get a look inside. pretty cool place, but sort of decaying. it's all been cleaned up now, and apparently tonight was the first of many concerts to come.
I saw some note about the concert yesterday. I'd missed three opportunities to see Bloc Party play, but this show was 35 bucks, started at 6:30 (or so the ad stated) and i already had plans for the day.
SO.. i went into Manhattan, had my fun at Battery Park, saw Strangers With Candy, went to a book store with some friends, and walked home over the Williamsbrug bridge.
As i was heading up Bedford in North Williamsburg, almost home,
I thought: "It's 8:30. I wonder if Bloc Party's is still playing?"
Then i heard them- clear across the park. loud as hell. i walked pretty fast over to the Pool and it turned out they'd only just started. I'd missed half a song only.
I sat down just outside the gates (with dozens of other kids) and got to hear the whole show-with great sound- for free. and they were worth the wait.
Best part is that since the front arch is so big and wide, you could still see them playing clearly up on the stage. for anyone who likes them i think the show was being taped for MTV or something, so it might air sometime in the next couple months..
i love my neighborhood. New York rocks.
