The Dark Knight Rises The Box Office Thread

TDK and going back BATMAN '89(Robert Wuhl comments on the DVD special edition that exhibitors specifically expressed this concern when they were shown the film first) could have been potentially screwed box office wise by the fact that the assumed core audience for a superhero blockbuster, children, could have been kept away from the movies by parents realising they were alot darker than expected.

And of course as it turned out that really didn't happen. So I have confidence that this won't deter TDKR.

I'm positive many of these points have been milked and discussed to their ends on here, but it's worth noting-

Additionally, Nolan's name overseas is becoming a powerful one, and with the ever increasing number of IMAX theaters domestic and international, if Rises only matches TDK's domestic total, the international total will be greater in all likelihood just because of the IMAX element, and that's why it's destined to make a worldwide figure of 1.3 billion, which isn't that big of a leap from TDK's box office counting inflation, raised ticket prices, and the surge of new IMAX theaters around the world. Plus, the marketing is going to be everywhere.

I'm fully convinced that this film will be the highest overall grossing film of 2012.

I have a good feeling that TDKR, although may not break The Avengers' record, will most likely make much more than TDK in the end. Unless, the film underperforms in its quality, which at this point is quite doubtful.

All in all, I see TDKR demonstrating impressive performance for its caliber and getting into TOP3 of the year.

The Avenger's will be. It has the "new shiny thing" and 3D ticket sales advantage. I thought that TDKR's would be but not anymore.

Not really. Even TDK's international numbers weren't impressive. This won't do much better.:word:

Yes it was (YouTube viewings). A few of your fellow posters promoted the stats on the boards, and TDKR trailer 2 topped The Avengers trailer 2 by seven million viewings (I think) in the first 48 hours because it wasn't available on Apple. Once again, it's not a big deal considering they're just YouTube viewings, but that's my point to those who say TDKR won't match The Avengers audience-wise. It won't matter if TDKR is darker than The Avengers, it's still Batman with Christopher Nolan's name attached, and a direct sequel to TDK.

Apparently you didn't read what I wrote, because in refuting me you said exactly what I wrote, but yes it topped it on YouTube because people weren't viewing it on iTunes, because it wasn't available.

Of course TDKR is ahead now. No one is watching the Avengers trailer now because the movie is out.

The point everyone is making about attendance figures is that when you have a big film like TDK, it's hard too match that the next time around. Star Wars had a higher attendance than Empire Strikes Back. Spider-man had a higher attendance than Spider-man 2.

TDKR is going to make money by the boatload, no doubt. It will just be hard to match what TDK did, because there was a huge audience boost from BB to TDK.

The Avengers trolling has gotten more subtle, I see....

You have to expect some excited Avenger's fans to come in here though...

If it makes you feel any better I think that the TDKR's has a good chance of being the better film and that's all that matters to me. And that comment isn't a dig at The Avenger's either because I liked the movie. I'm totally and completely fine with it's success.

I don't see TDKR's out grossing The Avenger's. I think like Tony Stark said that a perfect storm made TDK gross 533mil and I don't see a repeat. I think a lot of movies have this perfect storm thing, hell I don't see Hunger Games 2 or The Avenger's 2 doing as well as their first ones.

That doesn't mean these sequels aren't going to be successful I just think that the maximum audience came out for their first film and I think that the maximum audience came out for TDK. I'm still sticking to my 465mil prediction. I could even see it getting like 480ish mil but 530 or 600mil? Nah. I'd be fine if I were wrong and we some how managed two 500mil movies this summer.

I agree about the "perfect storm". I remember when INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM was released(yes, I'm that old!), and it was expected to be the most successful film of the year. However, GHOSTBUSTERS came along and ended up being more popular. In '89, Premier magazine picked GHOSTBUSTERS II to be the top film of the summer. Of course, BATMAN destroyed it, and the sequel to TEMPLE OF DOOM(LAST CRUSADE) also topped it at the box office. So these things are hard to predict.

But I still think TDKR has a legitimate shot at grossing 500 Million bucks domestically.

No one is trolling. We're discussing box office. We're discussing two movies that came out in the same year, so naturally the talk is biggest of 2012.

Well Temple of Doom sucked, so not a big surprise. Last Crusade was really an apology for how crappy TOD was. I'm not even sure what Crystal Skull was supposed to be...but I digress.

Yeah I'm old too, so I remember when all that stuff came out. Ghostbusters was a cultural phenomenon. You had a terrific screen play by Akroyd and Ramis, plus Ivan Reitman directing. It's again one of those things where you capture lightning in a bottle. That film is timeless, and even some 30 years later, it's still as enjoyable as it was then. My kids still love to watch it.

Batman '89 was another cultural phenomenon. Everyone around that summer remembers the most brilliant marketing for that movie. Just pictures of the Bat symbol everywhere. I remember guys getting the bat symbol cut into their hair. Even with as successful as TDK was and the viral marketing, it didn't compare to what went on summer of '89. Batman was absolutely everywhere.

I stand by what I said.
But trolling or gloating is to be expected on these message boards. The TDK fans were not innocent in 2008 when that movie broke the opening weekend record.

I'm not saying that it is right but it's just how the interwebs work.

Oh okay, apologies then. I thought you were also referring to the YouTube stats.

Regarding the audience, you're right. It's beyond difficult to match the successes of the previous installment. No doubt. History is against TDKR but film franchises like LOTR and Harry Potter, and the popularity of Batman in America also provide a factor here. Chris Nolan's name has been growing in popularity since TDK as well (Inception proved it). Now whether or not TDKR will match TDK's successes, that still remains to be seen but the film (now that the final trailer has been released) is getting colossal attention again.

It's why I believe TDKR can match and surpass TDK, in my opinion.

That's my issue with Smith too. He's very funny as a person, and he comes off as down to earth, but he also comes off as highly sensitive and fickle despite his demeanor.

Yeah, he seems like a decent guy but at times Smith gets caught up in the moment and makes overzealous statements (remember TDKR's prologue release? :funny:).

And it still won't match it.:word:

Bold words Odinson. I hope you don't go Kevin Smith on me when TDKR does match The Avengers (audience-wise). :woot:

I don't think Tony Stark is trolling. Now Spideyfan883, he was trolling... hard. Making a thread to announce how The Avengers was sooo much better than TDKR and how much money TA made... before the TDKR even comes out.

Perhaps trolling is too strong a word. He's certainly being condescending without any reason, which is not conducive to discussion.

Avengers and TDKR are the two MUST SEE movies of the summer. Nothing else truly has that label, not Spider-Man, not Battleship, not Prometheus (outside of genre fans).

I'm sure TDKR will sell as many tickets if not more than The Avengers. If it even comes close in overall gross without the aid of 3D, that itself would be a huge accomplishment.
