The Brave and the Bold News and Discussion Thread

I remember being so excited when Keaton was announced in Flash but it’s a shame we had to see the ‘89 Batman’s return in such a bad film.

Makes the cancellation of Batgirl all the more brutal

The thing that made me excited about Keaton in The Flash was that concept art that made it seem like Barry transported himself to the Burton Batman universe. Which I would have liked to have seen much more than what we got.

In the way that he wasn't lame to look at... Not that it was a risk anyway!

It's just that... Like I said, that movie didn't had much for itself.
But even though Keaton played a Batman here that wasn't really the one portrayed before – as you and @SwordOfMorning mentioned, it's clear that they wrote this Batman character vaguely enough to fit any actor agreeing to return – there was still some joy to see him there for me.

A joy composed of 95% frustration that the film wasn't something else...

Some old manips I had made back then.
Oh, what could have been...
Those are some great visuals! At the end of the day, Batman and Supergirl were the best parts of that movie - and they killed them off... Seeing Keaton again in the role was wonderful and he needed so much better.
I keep wondering what could have been if they had removed the Flash and just had a Batman and Supergirl team up movie.

Batman Beyond is the only project that could've interested me in seeing Micheal Keaton as the caped crusader again, everything else is just cheap nostalgia bait imo.

The Burton DC Universe. You know where Nic Cage's Superman and Michael Keaton's Batman help Barry save Supergirl and Michelle comes back as Catwoman. **** you WB!

I’ve seen three separate takes in rapid succession saying that it’s too soon for Damian and that they should be doing Jason Todd instead.

This feels… coordinated.

Who's the mysterious red hood! :o

Gunn said from the beginning that other Batfam characters being present was apart of the idea. I think the introduction of Bruce having a legitimate child in Damian is a solid foundation for a Batfam film anyway. It would naturally bring the former Robins toogether.

The 2006 status quo of Batman, Tim as Robin, Nightwing and Damian coming into their lives seems perfect to explore the character(s) from a yet unseen angle on the big screen IMO.

I'm kinda hung up on Batgirl. On one side I wanna see her in action as Batgirl. On the other side, I love her as Oracle, and it would be great to see a character with disability get the spotlight in the DCU, especially if she's as well written as she was in the Birds of Prey comics.

Well, why not both?

I'd be all for Oracle, but, I'd also want to see how she got to that point...

I get that many wish for an extended Bat-family on screen, but I can easily imagine that, in the context of a movie, it could be reduced to just a few members. A way to reduce the narrative and focus on fewer dynamics that would be easily identifiable by the audience. Let's say: Batman, Damian, Nightwing, and a deceased Robin. That's it.

Batman discovers Damian and isn't quite sure what to do with this lively kid who reminds him of his deceased partner. Meanwhile, this one is jealous of Grayson, the adopted son, who himself no longer has an ideal relationship with his guardian. Then, I can also imagine Batgirl appearing, acting as a sort of mediator between everyone... and to balance out the testosterone levels a little.

I know the movie Dynamic Duo seems to introduce more people, but I still think this movie will be an "elseworlds". Between that and Clayface, I think Gunn is playing a bit of a game of words about the connection to his DCU because of the confusion surrounding Batman.

I feel that the DCU Batman of James Gunn Universe will be a more cartoonish and fantastical Batman something like Adam West or like the 2004 the Batman animated series i think it will be a more Family Friendly Batman with a light tone the Batman that will sell more merchandise for children while Matt Reeves Batman will be the Batman with the realistic and dark stories

“Batman’s my biggest issue in all of DC right now, personally,” he said. “And it’s not — I’m not writing Batman, but I am working with the writer of Batman and trying to get it right, because he’s incredibly important to DC, as is Wonder Woman.

“So outside of the stuff that I’m doing in the projects that are actively going, our two priorities are finishing our Wonder Woman and our Batman scripts.”

Gunn then discussed in vague terms the kind of Batman he’s going for — or, perhaps it would be better to say the kind of Batman he's trying to avoid.

“Batman has to have a reason for existing, right? So Batman can’t just be ‘Oh, we’re making a Batman movie because Batman’s the biggest character in all of Warner Bros.,’ which he is. But because there’s a need for him in the DCU and a need that he’s not exactly the same as Matt’s Batman.

“But yet he’s not a campy Batman. I’m not interested in that. I’m not interested in a funny, campy Batman, really. So we’re dealing with that. I think I have a way in, by the way. I think I really know what it’s — I just am dealing with the writer to make sure that we can make it a reality.”

I don't think that B:TAS, which, despite being a kid-friendly cartoon, contained serious themes and dramatic storytelling, should be used in the same context as the Adam West show, as it gives the impression that you're conflating light or family-friendly Batman content with campiness, perhaps unintentionally. I do agree, though, that Gunn will likely seek to emulate the tone of said cartoon as well as some of the more mainstream Batman comics.

Yeah, I was just about to say that while Gunn likes to put his own spin on obscure characters, I can't see him “softening” Batman at all.

Ironically, I can really imagine that his vision of the character isn't that far off from what Affleck might have had at one point. I expect him to be mature, quite imposing, and definitely obsessive (well, that's how Batman is often portrayed today, but anyway).
It may not seem like an obvious connection and this is pure speculation, but what Gunn is doing with Peacemaker could be an indication on his Batman imo: a brute of a character but with feet of clay, who will certainly find balance through his new family—whether it's Damian as announced or within the upcoming Justice League.

You could say that Reeves is doing the same thing, this search for the right balance, but where his version is in the process of turning his revenge into something else and figuring out what his mission really is, I imagine Gunn's Batman to be worn out by it and questioning the durability of his actions and, by extension, his legacy.

Some promising updates on BatB, both story & casting

Batman Gets the Best DCU Casting Update From James Gunn - Comic Book Movies and Superhero Movie News - SuperHeroHype

Although Gunn didn’t take any names, he conveyed that he has an idea about actors he would want to see play Batman. “I have guys I like. I have guys that are at the top of the list, just like I had people that were at the top of the list for Superman. But let me tell you something, they aren’t David Corenswet, right? They didn’t get the job. People can guess, and maybe they’ll be right about certain things. I don’t know.

He also shared that they will conduct a screen test when the hiring process begins. “I know one actor in particular who’s a pretty big star that wants to be Batman. We’ve talked about it, but I’m not sure that’s the case.

The host also mentioned that fans have noticed Gunn being a fan of the popular show, 1923, which features Brandon Sklenar, a fan-favorite to play Batman. To this, Gunn responded, “Okay, I see what you’re doing. 1923, it’s a really good TV show, like I can’t believe how good that show was.

The filmmaker also gave an update regarding the script of the Brave and the Bold movie, saying, “The script isn’t done, I mean, I’ve got somebody writing a script, I think it’s really good. But it isn’t finished yet.

Meanwhile he can crank out a Superman script in three weeks.

A Gunn directed Batman movie is my current nightmare but it sounds like he's involved to the point he really might as well direct it.

He will. This is going to go just like Superman, which he wasn't originally going to direct. Can't wait for those that say it's the Batman they've been waiting for after Burton, Schumacher, Nolan, and Reeves were clearly not up to snuff. :o

It'll be truly incredible shiny new toy syndrome.

To Alan Ritchon's fans, RIP.

Wouldn't surprise me, he said that Batman was his favorite superhero once.
