Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey & Quincy Jones Developing ‘The Color Purple’ Musical For Warner Bros

Deadline has confirmed that Warner Bros is developing The Color Purple for the big screen again, but this time based off the Tony-winning Broadway musical.

Steven Spielberg, who directed and produced the 11-time Oscar-nominated 1985 film, is returning as a producer with Quincy Jones, though he will not direct. Both the musical and the film are based off of Alice Walker’s 1982 book about Celie, a black Southern woman who struggles to find her identity after suffering abuse from her father, husband and others over the course of four decades.

It's a good show. One of the few stage musicals I think can actually transfer straight to film without shenanigans. Hope they get Jennifer Hudson to play Shug.

Should be interesting to see the reaction to this.

Cynthia Erivo or bust.

Oh lovely, I always wanted to see the musical version but it would never show where I live. Can’t wait to watch it

Cynthia Erivo or bust.
Some people might get salty if she had the role after the backlash she got for playing Harriet Tubman.

I can tolerate this since it is at least different.

Can Fantasia act? Also, she’s two years older than Erivo so why not just… get Erivo? Maybe she didn’t want to do it but I would have thrown as much cash as her as I could to take on the role again.

Love seeing Colman Domingo thriving.

She actually played Miss Celie on Broadway years ago. She did really well. And for this being a musical, I’d definitely want her over Erivo.

Fantasia’s voice is still untouchable.

The Academy cant resist to this. Inspiring cast.
The trailer doesnt make much with me though.

Looks like it's missing some of the grit of the original movie, but I guess that's what happens when it becomes a musical. Music sounds good though.

Also, did they need to add "A Bold New Take" under the title lol

I was on the fence but that teaser sold me. Nothing is ever going to touch the classic that the original is, but this looks like it’ll be a good companion.

You know that was what was missing for me after watching the trailer. Mind you the movie is pretty as hell and shot by one of my favorite current cinematographers (Dan Laustsen, who of course has done the last few Guillermo Del Toro movies and John Wick Chapters 2-4). But at the same time it looked too pretty for how intense and dark that story can get. But who knows, maybe it works for this version.

Well, a little more related than that since Oprah, Quincy Jones and Steven Spielberg are still involved.

Probably closer to something like Hairspray.
Yep, that's a better example. I thought of Mean Girls but the musical movie isn't out yet. I can almost guarantee they'll do the same thing with Beetlejuice one day but they'll give it more distance after the sequel comes out.

Not really, it's based on the musical inspired by the book/original movie. It's like saying Les Miserables with Hugh Jackman is a remake of the non-musical version with Liam Neeson.

That’s the moral of the story. I saw the Broadway show eons ago, and obviously with them breaking into song it’s a completely different animal than the original movie.

Again, it looks like it’ll be a good companion to the OG film.

Been looking forward to this. The trailer was a little shaky in the beginning, but it got me by the end. I said it before and I'll say it again, 2023 is Halle's year. Fantasia is singing the house down, as usual. Gonna be a good one, folks...I know how the fam and I'll be spending Christmas.
