Warner Bros Developing LEGO Movie...

Warner Bros Builds LEGO Sequel With Chris McKay Directing

EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros has set Chris McKay to direct its sequel to The LEGO Movie, the film that opened last month and has so far turned in a worldwide gross of $361 million. McKay was animation co-director on the first film that was made under the direction of Phil Lord & Chris Miller. That duo is producing, and Michelle Morgan & Jared Stern are writing a treatment for the next installment. Warner Animation Group is steering the franchise. They are still working all this out, including whether this is a straight sequel or a film that broadens the LEGO empire by focusing on the character Ninjago.

At the same time, McKay is also negotiating a first-look producer deal at the studio. Dan Lin & Roy Lee are also producing. Who’s McKay? The Chicago native cur his teeth mixing animation with irreverence on the small screen, winning an Emmy for his work on Cartoon Network’s Robot Chicken, on which he has directed over 40 episodes, and the film Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode 3. He also directed and produced Titan Maximum for Adult Swim. The sequel is being overseen by Courtenay Valenti for Warner Bros, and McKay is repped by UTA, Mosaic and attorney Jeff Endlich.

While a big hit in the U.S. it's not faring as well overseas, except the U.K.

So far it has done 135m overseas, more than a third of that from the U.K. with 48m, but even in the U.K. it dropped over 50% last weekend. No other market is over 10m, although when it opens in Australia it could have numbers similar to the U.K.
Asian markets especially seem to be ignoring it, in South Korea (one of the big 3 including Japan and China) it has barely done 1m U.S. and has already been pulled (compare that with the near $77m from Frozen which is still playing).

Still, it should come close to 500m worldwide, which is very good for an animated movie. It just doesn't seem to be clicking with non-english speaking countries, which is kind of odd since those usually do well since they are so easily translated into local languages.

Of course, it's a movie about not stifling creativity and individuality.

That's right, I went there. :o

Hm. They most certainly could have done worse. Hope it's in good hands.

Finally saw this today. Super-cute! I loved how they did the textures. For some reason I didn't expect that. People were totally right, that there was stuff for adults too. There was actually a lot of subtle messages about conformity at the beginning.

The little twist at the end was adorbs. :awesome: And yeah, the message was amusing considering that Lego makes all their money on the branded sets that come with discrete instructions. :oldrazz: But I remember having a big bag of random pieces as a kid.

Awesome. Glad you liked/loved it.

My second favourite film of the year so far, it had everything I hoped and more. Far exceeded my expectations

Funny it took so long to come out here when we animated so much of it.

Finally got a chance to see this and....yeah I frankly don't know what all the fuss is about. Given the reviews I was expecting something good and whilst it did have it's moments a lot of the movie felt surprisingly meh. Perhaps my expectations were too high or I wasn't in the right frame of mind but a lot of the humour came off as really flat. The film picks up in the last 45 mins or so but it almost feels like a chore to get there. About half way through the film I had to admit to myself yeah this isn't really working for me. Like I said it's got its moments, and the twist was very unexpected and enjoyable, but overall I couldn't help but feel this movie didn't live up to the hype. On top of that I found it incredibly hard to focus on some action scenes as it just seemed like endless lego bricks were flying across the screen. Overall I can appreciate it because there's no doubt a lot of love went into the movie, it just wasn't as good as I was hoping for.

7/10 for effort.

I have to agree, though I gave the movie a slightly better rating than you, this really didnt live upto the hype, and all of the funniest bits were in the trailer, it does pick up at the end, but overall I wasnt impressed as much as I have been with many other kids movies.

Rewatched this on demand. This movie is so much fun. And it looks great in HD.

Finally got to see this last night. It was about as perfect a movie on the topic as you can get. Totally had me crying by the end. The nice thing was, geven the context of the story, all flaws and plot holes could easily be chalked up to the boy's control over what the audience is seeing. Just loved every minute of it.

Spaceship!

When Batman steals the hyperdrive he somehow ends up back on the boat.

I took that to be a commentary on the dark knight trilogy's favourite plot hole.
