The Critics' Reviews of Spider-Man 3 Thread

Can't say I didnt enjoy the movie's action sequences, especially Venom, who was fantastically represented besides his voice. I had hoped his voice would turn into a growl when he put the mask on, but it was still Topher. Also, the movie's editing was terrible. Odd pacing throughout, including short scenes with awkward endings really ruined the movie as a whole. I'd give this movie a 7/10, only because Venom was awesome.

Heh i knew very early on when they wanted venom and the black suit story that raimi's original vision for sm3 was going to be ruined.... i guess the venom fans got what they wanted and look at how it played out, a rushed movie with about 100 coincidences at every corner. I need to rewatch sm1 and sm2 in order to wash away the bad memories of this movie. Let me just say parts of it werent total losses but overall its a major disappointment for me. I still remember that warm summer day in 2004 when i and my friends were in the theathers, everyone was so into sm2 that it felt like we, the audience, were living in THAT world. The awesomeness, the amazement, and just being-like-a-kid-again feeling was not felt after i left spiderman3. I can only dwell on how sm3 would have turned out if raimi was left to do the story on his own without pressures from the studio execs. We'll never get the real spiderman3 now, i can only hope spiderman 4 can make better of whats left of this series.
Pretty much agree.

Be careful. These people don't like it if you say anything negative about this movie.

well, i finally saw spiderman3, and let me give you some back story to give some weight to the review. i am one of those few that while they were filming, would check every single day to see if i could find any new pics or info, anything blurry image, all that, collected ever photo, watched every leaked video, that sort of thing, i knew the basic plot, and i read the novel. now on to the review, the novel was a million times better then the movie. i liked the movie but i could absolutly not beleive that i had any feeling at all other then complete joy. i mean i been following this movie for like 2 yrs or something watching every move it made, and i never thought id agree with anything anybody said negative about it, but here i go.
This movie did seem a little rushed storywise, everything was just moving along like it was going through the motions, this scene is first, then this one, followed by that, all the storylines put together seemed really forced,
there wasnt a whole lot of action, or maybe there was just a whole lot of talking, spiderman had the black suit for not very long, everything just seemed very fast paced and just hurry up and get to the next scene sort of thing. there was a lot of logic errors, just simple things i caught on to that was just so out of place. the novel fleshed out a lot! there was this one scene i was dying to see with brock going to gwens house and her father confronts him, and a couple other scenes that were in the novel and not the movie.
and now for the good.
the special effects were amazing. really really well done, i was always venom, venom, venom with this movie, didnt care too much about sandman, how exciting could sand be? then i saw the movie and i gotta say one of my fave scenes was when he started to form for the first time.
i thought the sandman and venom meet was really awsome. venom looks damn amazing. wasnt in it all that much but he was alright, the move was downright halarious, like the part with j.j taking his pills, love it. dont understand why his desk shook everytime the buzzer rang. i dunno im kinda on the fence with this movie. it just didnt feel epic to me like part 2 did. it felt more like a smaller movie, maybe its just me,and when spiderman kissed gwen i thought that was the stupidist thing ever, made no sense, why would he do something so stupid? i know hes cocky bout being spiderman but come on,. i would say i liked it, not as muh as i could have, but i have a feeling they will be releasing the dvd with lots of deleted scenes. just seems like they cut a lot out. im still gonna buy the dvd, but im not as excited as i was b4 i saw it. i dont know what it is bu i just didnt feel this one like i did part 2. still good movie tho. id give it 8 out of 10.

I think the people who didn't like this movie have no sense of humor

Now there's a sweeping generalisation. I love SM1 and 2, think SM2 is the finest comic-book movie around actually. The previous movies had their lighter moments, and corny/cheesy moments, but balnced this well against the other elements in the films. I know he's not Batman, he's not that dark, but the black suit story was played for laughs too much. It was way too campy, as if Raimi didn't take it seriously, and decided the only way to depict the effect on Peter's personality was to make him into the lead singer of My Chemical Romance. The movie reminds me of Rachel's trifle from Friends with beef in it. Too many things mixed together that, while nice individually, really shouldn't be put into a whole.

I would like to ask the critics if they ever got bored with this movie, because I sure didn't. Yes, some parts seemed to be a little forced but they were still pretty entertaining. Although I think SM2 is better there were some parts were I was really bored, not in this one. This in no X-Men 3 or Superman III, not at all.

The worst **** film ever,right now i understand the critic´s reviews....now i understand all...
Byes!

Well. This is incredable. SM 3 is now 67 % user fresh at RT. Still holding at 62 % with the critics. Has loss 12 % with users since Friday morning.

If I'm a critic I wouldn't really praise this movie like I'll give it a B or B+ the movie is not long too.

Is that good or bad?

Well considering Spider-Man was 91 % favoriable with the public, and Spider-Man 2 was 89 % favoriable with the public, Spider-Man 3 is 67 % favoriable with the public,is significant, and it has dropped 12 % since the 79 % favoriable after the midnight viewings, add to the fact that it is 2 % lower then X-Men 3's rating of 69 %, all that added togeather may spell a bit of trouble next weekend. Repeat business. I went 3 times to see both SM, and SM 2. I have no desire to see SM 3 a 2nd time.

Actually, Spider-Man is 90%, and Spider-Man 2 is 93%, while Spider-Man 3 is currently 62%. SM-3 also has three times the amount of bad reviews that the first two movies got.

From just reading this board I can tell that this movie had one problem. Editing. Almost every problem people had with it had to do with the editing.

That I will agree with 100%. Still, the content is there, it's just not being spoon-fed to us anymore.

I usually see these types of movies at least 2 times maybe even 3 times in the theater. In fact, before I saw it my first time(which was in a regular theater), I was considering seeing it in IMAX as well. Now after watching this movie, I have no desire to see it again, at least not until DVD.

Doc Ock, Carp Man was referring to the user rating, not the critical rating with his numbers. Either way, both the user rating and the critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes are significantly lower than they are for SM1 and SM2.

Doesnt seem to be effecting SM3's box office THUS far though...this movie has apparently made back it's production AND advertising costs in three days. :wow:

No doubt. This movie was virtually critic proof and I knew it would set all types of records. However, a movie's box office gross does not determine it's quality. I'd be interested to see how the word of mouth for this movie effects it here on out and how many repeated viewings there will be. Speaking for myself, I almost always see these types of movies more than once, but for SM3, I have no desire to see it again at the theater.

What are you guys talking about? It needs to make 516 million to make back its production cost alone. The theaters need to make money too you know, 50% goes back to them. Don't even get me started on the advertising cost and the "record breaking" screens it was shown on. The movie will only see returns with the DVDs and toys (which is a big sum). The film should make a profit but I don't think it will make as much as Spidey 1 & 2.

I'd be more worried about the word-to-mouth. I am not quite sure it's as good as you guys think.

I've heard theaters dont get 50% until AFTER opening weekend.

But dont worry; I think 516 million is a lock at this point, regardless.

Uh, theatres hardly make any money off a film the first three weeks of release. That's why they love films with long legs and why concessions are so expensive. For event films like this, it's not uncommon for them to take in less that 8%!

I thought everybody would love spider-man......never thought it would get this much mixed reviews.....

Just because the first two were actually decent, and in SM2's case the best comic superhero movie ever, doesn't and shouldn't shield how SM3 is viewed by critics and fans. Why is it so hard to believe? You put together a crappy movie, you get crappy reviews. Yes it had big expectations, I didn't expect them to reach those, but hell, the movie was just a mess.

on movies.com they compiled the critics grade and it's a B
Fans grade is a B +
and movies.com grade is an A -

not bad at all
