The Critics' Reviews of Spider-Man 3 Thread

Hunter deleted a lot of their posts, so the fun is back! At least, for now...

Well, to be honest I haven't seen a really good manip in a while. Apart from the 'make up test' image, but that was more depressing than anything

^ Please stop posting that in every thread. They really aren't that funny.

*sigh*

Seeing as critics raved over the first two Spidey films, doesn't seem like this one is on par. Or atleast story wise.

Look at this way - nothing the WB releases will be as bad as that was. ;)

Although yes, as a manip, it was spectacular.

In fairness when I first saw Scarecrow, to say the least, I was pissed. I care far more about the Joker, so I will complain alot more, but WB have disapointed me with first look photos before.

Empire strikes back got mixed reviews and is now considered a classic. Did the movie change? no.

Gigli's now considered a classic, but for the wrong reasons. You can't compare Spiderman 3 to the holy trilogy, you just can't.

Yeah, they don't have the greatest track record there. But you never know. :yay:

Exactly.

But the thing that worries me is that these are the same critics who loved the first two Spider-Man films, just look at their RT numbers. Seems like Spidey 3 is drastically different in a way.

Exactly.

I've said from the moment I heard the entire cast sheet, that this film will be overpacked and is made purely for the fans, critics won't like it as much. I would go back to earlier threads and quote myself, but that would be far too time consuming. Frankly I could care less if this aint a critical smash like the other 2, somehow I think this will be a visual spectacle and the majority of fans love it, and to be honest, that is all that matters.

Well, as I said in another thread. It's been a fun 3 years on this board waiting for Spider-Man 3. I enjoyed talking with many of you and most of you are very nice and intelligent people. I hope you all have a great experience watching the film and hope you all enjoy it. Have fun guys. Now, I am off to have a great night.

Exactly.

the same critics who loved a new hope gave empire and return of the jedi bad reviews.

I hope there isn't panic at Sony or Marvel right now.

I also hope the reviews don't affect the BO numbers.

Once again, this place was nothing but a massive nest of negativity until production for Spider-man 3 really kicked in.

I expect it will soon happen again.

If Spider-man 3 disappoints, I'll survive though.

Care to explain why it was a nest of negativity? Why would it be? I mean SM1 and SM2 were both smash hits and good movies. Why would the boards have any reason to be negative?

I wasn't a member back then but I know for certain people constantly bashed GG's costume and the lack of webshooters. And for SM2...people bashed on how deviated Ock was changed from his comic counterpart...especially his redemption and Rosie. I agree with VileOne...people bash the movie but in a couple of years...SM3 will be heralded as a great movie.

SM3 will break records this weekend. It will likely make $140-145 million. The thing that reviews will hurt is its TOTAL box office. Pirates 2 did not have anywhere near the competition that SM3 faces. SM3 has Shrek 3 and Pirates 3, both of which would already hurt SM3's legs even if it was reviewed as a great movie. SM3 doesn't have the whole summer to itself to make cash like DMC did. It will still make a crapload ($380-385 million domestic in my opinion). Probably $800+ million worldwide.

When Spider-Man 2 rolled around, I remember a lot of people were complaining.

I've been thinking this too. With the additions of Gwen and Venom, you can tell this is purely for the fans.

Couple of years? As soon as it comes out tonight at midnight, people will be heralding it as a great movie, just not the critics.

Those are the obseessed fans though. There will always be a good segment of them that hate the movie. But the general fans and people that watched SM2 liked the movie. Heck i remember leaving the theatre and saying, "that is how you make a good hollywood movie". Based on what I've read so far about this one, I doubt I'll come close to saying that.

Obviously I'll see it for myself. But there was something pure and good about SM2 that you don't see that often in big blockbuster movies. That is why most consider it a great film for what it was. I don't think SM3 is going to get close to that level. I think this will be pretty much on par with what happened to X-Men 3. Fans and the general public mostly liked the movie after seeing it. "The movie was awesome man". But most of us agree now that X-Men 3 had a lot wrong with it. I didn't like the film because I didn't care about the characters by the end of it. It had too much fluff and the action scenes were the only thing worth watching again (not enough to carry a picture). Sound famillar? Sounds like SM3 reviews to me. SM2 was different for most people because it made you care, and you can get something out of the movie watching it today. SM3 seems to be more of the fluff variety like X-men 3. It probably won't ever reach the fanboy fantasies of greatness that most of us consider SM2 to be.

Does it mean SM3 won't be exciting or have super geeky great moments? I'm sure the movie will have those "wow" moments and it will be thrilling with a big audience opening night. But the movie probably won't hold up to greatness for a lot of you and some of you will consider it downright awful. And that's too bad.

I have seen the movie and loved it...I am talking about the whiney fanboys that think this movie will be everything that they expect.

By the way...both of our theatres here have sold out of all 6 midnight showings and holds about 300 people per theatre. That is amazing! I can also bet most all of the showings tomorrow will be sold out.

Well Spider-man 2 came out, everyone loved it.

But later on it got a to point where people couldn't stop complaining about it. Tobey sucked. Kirsten sucked. Molina was good but his utilization in the movie sucked.

The writing sucked. Raimi casting his friends and family sucked. Working on a story with his brother sucked. The budget sucked. Ursula Ditkovitch sucked I don't know what it was. Maybe it was complacency.

Maybe people just got a little spoiled with these movies and how good they were. I won't say the movies are perfect, but I mean sometimes it just got outright silly. When Episode III came out people were talking about how the love story in that movie wasn't "SYRUPY WB PUPPY LOVE BULL****" like in the Spider-man films which just left me scratching my head.

More than anything else I think people didn't want to see a story centered around an MJ/Peter romance in the films and wanted to see a Peter more indepedent of the ladies I guess. But you just can't make a Spidey film without the ladies.

that's also what I've been hearing alot:

Spider-Man = X1

Spider-Man 2 = X2

Spider-Man 3 = X3

The general audience loved X3, threw in tons of comic characters and all, just wasn't considered a masterpiece.
