This happens to be one of those movies that put me between a rock and a hard place as a film critic. Based on my scale, I judge how a movie should be seen. That does take into account how good a film is, but mainly tells you if it is worth paying the money to see it in theatres or is it worth waiting for the rental. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer is the exact kind of bad movie that ended up having amazing special effects and very decent action scenes, which kept me entertained throughout. I saw the first Fantastic Four film when it was released in theatres and I really did not care too much for it. The second one pretty much blows that one away. I do have one question though. Why the hell did they die Jessica Alba's hair blonde and give her blue eyes. She looked so fake throughout the entire film. Besides a couple of scenes where she looked stunningly beautiful, she did not look that great for the majority of the film. You could even see the caked on make-up she had on. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer stars Jessica Alba (Sin City, Into the Blue), Chris Evans (Not Another Teen Movie, Cellular), Michael Chiklis (The Shield), Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix Trilogy), and Ioan Grufudd (Black Hawk Down, pretty much a no-name actor).
The plot line to the film is extremely simple and clichéd. The Silver Surfer (voiced by Laurence Fishburne) is sent to planet Earth to destroy it. Shocker, the Fantastic Four have to stop him. Now obviously that is a very BONE DRY plot description, but that is essentially what is going on. Just to give a little background, the Fantastic Four were created in a freak space-accident when they went through some kind of dust cloud. It altered their bodies in different ways, i.e. Alba became the Invisible Woman, Grufudd became Mr. Fantastic, Chiklis became The Thing and Evans became Johnny Storm. This time around the Fantastic Four have become extreme celebrities, almost on the same level as Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. Jessica Alba, who plays the Invisible Woman, and Ioan Grufudd (plays Mr. Fantastic) have decided to get married. The Silver Surfer, who has been destroying all other planets in the universe, has made his stop on Earth. While there, he has to create a bunch of craters which will eventually be used in destroying the earth. Just a little side note, this Silver Surfer is freaking bad-ass. When I first saw the trailer, he kind of reminded me of the T-1000 from the greatest action movie ever made, Terminator 2: Judgement Day. He has that same liquid metal look that Robert Patrick had in the Terminator film. I do not know what it was, but this Silver Surfer character was just amazing to look at. He was obviously CGI, but it looked so damn cool. I just liked his mannerisms and voice (done by Laurence Fishburne). I think it is safe to say that he made the movie for me.
Overall, the film has AN EXTREMELY bad script but still entertained the hell out of me with its amazing special effects and great action scenes. That is really all the movie has going for it. They try to throw some comedy into the film, but every one liner that Michael Chiklis (The Thing) used was extremely awful and clichéd. The only remotely funny parts were with Chris Evans, who people sleep on a little bit. He was HILARIOUS is Not Another Teen Movie. I know that people will probably think less of me, but that is one funny movie. I can watch it over and over and still laugh just as hard as when I saw it for the first time. Getting back to Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, the film's special effects are what makes it fun. Watching Mr. Fantastic stretch all over the place is seriously mind bending. I could really care less for the Invisible Woman and Johnny Storm's effects kind of became old in the first film. The person who stole the whole film though was the Silver Surfer. He was just so cool, calm and collected. I am just warning you about this film. It is NOT a GOOD MOVIE. It is seriously just a "popcorn flick" with great special effects. I give the film 3.5 BDKs because I do feel that it is worth seeing as a matinee if you like special effect films. If you do not really care, then wait for the rental
