The Curious Case of Spider-Man & Hulk Rights (Or Keep Hope Alive That the Rights Will Revert)

I'm sort of taking these numbers being thrown out with a grain of salt because it feels too much like Sony trying to change the PR narrative and they're likely oversimplifying what Disney is actually offering. Not saying Disney is blameless in the situation but Sony are probably the ones who made the negotiations public in the first place so as to force Disney's hand but it's kinda backfired on them since people seem to like Disney/Marvel Studios/Feige over Sony's braintrust.
Especially the fact it's not a reboot and therfore it will be noticed storywise.
Also if Disney decide to fight dirty and release an MCU film against it.

why are you assuming a Spider-Man movie without the MCU would be able to generate 700-800M dollars nowadays? because Venom - a movie borderline falsly marketed as MCU-adjacent (as Pascal put it) - tricked people into watching it?

How exactly did Sony trick people into watching Venom? Its not like they illegally used the Marvel Studios logo. I saw no deception in the trailers. The only thing I can think of is the interview you mentioned I doubt that would have been enough to get people to go "oooh venom is adjacent to the MCU? well now I really want to see it!" They went to see Venom cause of Venom thats it.

seeing Tom's reaction on social media that is a very big if

He has a contract and other Sony properties in the pipeline. If you're counting on him to protest, good luck with that

If they got Tom Holland, they will still come. We're a minority of the audience for these films

Tom Holland will make money, for sure. If they are forced to reboot though, I think they will take a hit. I strongly suspect Holland will come on board though.

Yeah, this isnt gonna be one of those 'ga wont notice, only fans care' situations. Lots of people at work today asked about it and werent into spiderman being out of mcu. Like, i cant believe how many people actually heard about this.

I agree if they reboot, the ip world take a massive loss. But, Holland I don't see going anywhere. He has at least 1 movie left, and other projects with Sony in the works. He won't rock the boat, and likely will make huge bank in the end

It feels like it had a bigger impact than usual outside of fan circles than I’ve seen for this kind of thing.

More than a million likes for Jermey Reiner's insta post.

yeah have to be realistic here. If fans are hoping he protests, they’re kidding themselves. He’s not going to ruin his career over it.

My wife actually pulled me aside and asked me 'So why the hell is Sony pulling Spider-Man back' She basically watches the movies, but doesn't really involve herself with any of those other news.

I think Disney is going to go the fantastic four route with Spider-Man. Their going to promote it as little as possible if it all. Basically shunning the brand until such a time by some miracle the rights revert or they just buy Sony. Disney probably just had enough off Sony leeching off the MCU.

As a side looks like he is filming end of the year so Venom 2 won't be retooled without needing a delay.

While building Spiderman rides?

Basically confirms Rothman and the Sony braintrust have gotten cocky with Venom (and Into the Spider-Verse) and think they can create stuff on par with the MCU on their own.

Do you have any idea how much they make of Spider-Man merchandise? They won't give that up for this. They own the merchandise rights to Spider-Man, unlike the other properties you mentioned before the Fox deal.

No deal is better than a bad deal I say. If I were Sony I'd go on my own and focus on telling a good story with Holland as Spider-Man. Maybe bring Miller & Lord to oversee the franchise.

Cinematic universes are cool but a trend is a trend and if the films are at least or par with the MCU I can't see them not being successful.

Implication that Disney Shareholders want talks. Could see Iger getting involved.

This article is pretty balanced in where they say fault lies. Yes, Sony seems keen that they got their groove back per the article, but primarily just points out that both studios are a different places than they were in 2014 when the other deal was signed.

I think that's too hopeful of a notion to have.
