I just finished reading the Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller and I thought it was great. If you have read it, please share your thoughts. If you haven't, then i recomend you read it.

I think it's just fantastic. But it also started the "batman the dick" thing, even if I've always thought that Batman acts like this because he broke the oath to fight crime, he was old and faced a world which was more cruel than before. Some writers took this characterization into the mainstream books...

Yeah, batman came off as a jerk at some points, but at least it stuck close to his darker roots. But of course it did, it was Frank Miller. The mans a genious.

Yeah but he was only a jerk to criminals, not to alfred for example.

Dark Knight Returns is an awesome piece of work, although overrated at times.

I loved it. It's very ambitious, and I think it was the first comic book that genuinely impressed me.

The same thing happened to me.

The first Batman story I had read was Year One, and while yeah, it was good, it really didn't hook me into comic Batman, or reading comics in general. But after I read DKR, I was hooked. I'd still say it's probably one of the top 5 best comics I've read yet.

It's difficult to overstate exactly what DKR did-not just for Batman, but for the whole comics medium.

That said, it is indeed the greatest Batman story ever told.

Batman: Year One disagrees with you. In my humble opinion, of course.

I loved it, especially the dialogue in the Batman/Superman confrontation at the end which was brilliant.

The Two-Face and Superman parts rocked, the rest absolutely sucked.

I absolutely love DKR.
Its sequel though...

I don't think it's the greatest batman story ever told. I think year one is head and shoulders above dkr.
Dkr has alot to do with the time it was made in while year one is more of a timeless tale.
I think dkr is very overrated.

See I've read both Year one and two as well. I found them to be a little slower than DKR. Year two especially, the reaper was cool and all, but his "catch phrase" was way too repetetive! Year one had no villians really, it had the start of catwoman but nothing really more. I myself am more into cool villians, which is why i stick to spiderman and batman because they have the coolest villians! DKR had joker and two-face, two of the coolest batman villians. It was a little more compelling than Year One and Especially Year Two. I'm not saying that they are horrible, just that DKR is better.

DKR Book One is absolutely perfect. That twist at the end with Two Face explaining his motivation - man, that was a pure unadulterated genius.

Yeah, but you can't blame Miller for that--you have to blame O'Neil for getting the other writers to imitate Miller for that. :o

Oh, hell yes, I went there. Who wants some?! :cmad:

Not the best Batman story, but still an enjoyable read. The sequel was like watching a car crash involving clowns. Funny and depressing at the same time.

I like it, but the art bothers me, it seems to get worse as the book goes on. And the saving Gotham on horseback scene I think is really cheesy. So I think it's somewhat overrated, but still very good.

I don't know why people think DKR is overrated....nobody thought that before.

When was "before"?

Before it came out?

I remember the days when folks were saying it was better than watchmen. Thank god those days are long gone.
