So what exactly were you expecting from a movie based off a story line where Batman's spends a good portion of it incapacitated?
TDKR a thousand times over. BR is a sexist pile of garbage. Because apparently in Tim Burton's world, the only way that a woman could conceivably give Batman a good fight is if she had to be RESURRECTED FROM THE DEAD BY MAGICAL CATS.
It's also partially responsible for the Halle Berry Catwoman movie.
On the other hand, Danny Devito's disgusting Penguin character may have inadvertently inspired his equally disgusting Frank Reynolds character on Always Sunny so... the film does have a few merits. But still... PENGUIN F***ING COMMANDOS? I don't know how many of you are old enough to remember this but that was the moment when the Batman franchise began to turn into a joke. I remember Wizard magazine and other comic book publications back then constantly making fun of how stupid they were.
^ I agree with that. Batman '89 is a largely uninteresting movie, IMO. Returns at least did something interesting with the two villains, even though Batman was sidelined even further.
TDKR > Batman Returns, every day of the week.
I'll go a step further....
Superman Returns > Batman Returns
Batman Returns is majestic. TDKR is a good movie, but I walked out a little disappointed.
My main problem was it was all style and no substance.
Batman defeated the main villain.
So did Batman in TDKR. Hell, Batman actually defeated Bane at the end while the Penguin was done in by a bunch of Bats that randomly flew out of the batmobile.
Batman pushed a button on a remote control that released the bats.
Did you watch TDKR? Catwoman killed Bane.
Yep.

Better than Batman Returns.
TDKR, however the fight choegraphy is appalling.
