So what exactly were you expecting from a movie based off a story line where Batman's spends a good portion of it incapacitated?

I assumed he would get better a lot faster in the movie. Nolan just drug out the Bruce stuck in a hole in the ground far too long. The comic books had Azrael taking up the slack so it's not like there were multiple issues of the
comic books where it was just Bruce siting in a wheelchair. Plus in the comic books Bruce kept on working as a detective even when he was in a wheelchair. So it's not like he was totally useless even when he was incapacitated.
Why not in the movie Bruce is still in the Batcave working on ways to counter Bane even if Bruce was no longer a physical challenge to Bane? Bruce being a detective was almost ignored in the movie.
As goofy as Batman Returns was, Bruce still did a lot of detective work in that one.

The Dark Knight Rises.

For me, Batman Returns is one of the most disappointing sequels of all-time.

TDKR a thousand times over. BR is a sexist pile of garbage. Because apparently in Tim Burton's world, the only way that a woman could conceivably give Batman a good fight is if she had to be RESURRECTED FROM THE DEAD BY MAGICAL CATS.

It's also partially responsible for the Halle Berry Catwoman movie.

On the other hand, Danny Devito's disgusting Penguin character may have inadvertently inspired his equally disgusting Frank Reynolds character on Always Sunny so... the film does have a few merits. But still... PENGUIN F***ING COMMANDOS? I don't know how many of you are old enough to remember this but that was the moment when the Batman franchise began to turn into a joke. I remember Wizard magazine and other comic book publications back then constantly making fun of how stupid they were.

Harsh, but there's a lot of truth to this.

TDKR > Batman Returns, every day of the week.
I'll go a step further....

Superman Returns > Batman Returns

I'll go a step further too...

Batman Returns > Batman 89

^ I agree with that. Batman '89 is a largely uninteresting movie, IMO. Returns at least did something interesting with the two villains, even though Batman was sidelined even further.

I don't particularly care for either but I don't recall '89 feeling as aimless.

Quoted for truth. Plot has always been a weak point for both Burton films.

In Returns, there are two times in the film when Batman's armor does not live up to what it is supposed to be - when Catwoman is able to pierce it with her talon, and when Keaton rips the 'rubber' cowl apart! What happened to the bulletproof ARMOR that he wears in Batman '89?'

Batman Returns is majestic. TDKR is a good movie, but I walked out a little disappointed.

Pretty neck and neck.

I guess thats to be expected given TDKR's divisive reputation and Batman Returns cult following.

As Joker pointed out, BR sidelined Batman even further. At best, he felt like a co-lead in Batman '89 (though I still love that movie because it was what first got me into Batman) and in BR he was a third stringer behind Catwoman and Penguin. The first film set a bad precedent by giving the villain maximum screentime and it only got worse in the sequels.

TDKR gets a bad rap because we don't see a lot of Batman in costume. But I'll take actual character development for Bruce Wayne over a few token scenes of Bruce beating people up before we get to the more important stuff (Devito waddling around in his fat suit and Pfieffer acting like she just had a coke binge). TDKR has its flaws and it's also a bit overstuffed but at least it felt like a movie about Batman/Bruce Wayne to me.

I was disappointed with TDKR too, after having seen Batman Begins and TDK. My main problem was it was all style and no substance. We had great visuals and a serviceable Batman but a weak story and a boring mustache twirling villain that was done in by a side character instead of Batman. Shouldn't the hero of the movie triumph over the villain? I was bored through most of the film. If I had been watching it in the sofa I probably would have fallen asleep.

Batman Returns was goofy as hell, really just a step up from the Batman 1966 TV show. But at least for the most part it was entertaining. So Batman Returns wins because it does the most important thing a popcorn movie should do, entertain. And at least in Batman Returns, Batman defeated the main villain.

TDKR, easily. That's not a knock in Batman Returns, which I enjoyed as well.

I think you've got the movies in this poll confused.

Batman defeated the main villain.

So did Batman in TDKR. Hell, Batman actually defeated Bane at the end while the Penguin was done in by a bunch of Bats that randomly flew out of the batmobile.

Did you watch TDKR? Catwoman killed Bane. Batman was about to die until Catwoman came to his rescue.

The bats didn't randomly fly out of the Batmobile. Batman pushed a button on a remote control that released the bats.

Batman pushed a button on a remote control that released the bats.

Actually The Penguin did that. And the bats came out of the Batskiboat not the Batmobile. Penguin essentially killed himself lol.

Yeah Catwoman killed him, but Bane had already been physically bested by Batman. He escaped the pit Bane put him in, too. Something Bane never managed. Batman bested Bane in every meaningful way. That's why Bane was reduced to shooting a tied up Batman minutes before they were all going to die. He wanted that petty victory because Batman beat him.
