The Documentary Thread

Not Quite Hollywood is a great documentary about the "Ozploitation" film period in 70s'/80s Australia'. Lots of fun and really makes you want to explore every film shown there.
I heard about this one and I wanted to check it out. (Cool Cagney avatar btw)
There is also a funny doc with Hollywood in its title: "I'm from Hollywood", about the crazy adventures of Andy Kaufman in the world of professional wrestling.

_ "The Cutting Edge". A good doc about the subtle and primordial art of Film Editing.
_ "American Pimp". A fun doc directed by the Hughes Brothers about the second oldest profession in the world.

I just bought a doc about Jim Henson and the Muppets that I'm looking forward to watching.

-"Man on a Wire": It's an intersting doc about a tight-rope walker, and how he walked across the Twin Towers.
-"Infamy": It's about street graffiti, which I knew nothing about, but it's an amazing doc.
-"Comedian": I practice stand-up, and this is a great doc on what goes into telling and crafting jokes.
-"It Might Get Loud": It's great if you like rock music.
-"Rising Son:Christian Hosoi": I used to skate when I was younger, and is about the fall of a great skater into drugs.
-"Urban Explorers: Into the Darkness": Just an interesting doc about people who explore urban underground.
-"When You're Strange": It's about the Doors.
-"LoudQUIETloud:A Film About The Pixies": It's about The Pixies reunion.
-"Rolling Stones: Stones in Exile": I like The Stones
-"I Am Comic": Again, it's a comedy doc about many things comedy. It's a solid watch.
-"Super High Me": Follows comedian Doug Benson who makes a satirical doc on Super Size Me, but about Marijuana.
-"Dogtown and Z-Boys": Shows the very beginning of street skating.
-"Restrepo": It's about a group who goes overseas to fight against the Taliban.
-"The Endless Summer": I like watching surfing movies, and this was one of the first ever made. It's a classic.
-"Fall From Grace": It's about The Phelps family, and what they're about. I now hate them.
-"Planet Earth"
-"The King of Kong": It's about a guy who goes for the worlds record in Donkey Kong, but has some bumps and scandals along the way.

Those are off the top of my head. If I can think of more, I'll post. Also, if you have Netflix, you can stream all of those, except for Comedian and Planet Earth. ;)

^ Good Ones:up:.
I bolded the ones I've seen and I really liked them.
I think "Man on a Wire" won the Oscar for best doc a couple years ago.
I really enjoyed "Comedian".
Tom DiCillo directed "When you're strange" and it's narrated by Johnny Depp (I love DiCillo's "Living in Oblivion".)
"Dogtown and Z-Boys" was great, much better than "Lords of Dogtown" the feature film based on the same story.
"The Endless Summer" is indeed a classic.

_ "Let There Be Rock". A documentary about AC/DC back when Bon Scott was still the singer. Another great Rock Doc.
_ "Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson". A fantastic documentary about the boxer Jack Johnson.
_ I still want to see "The Decline of Western Civilization." A doc directed by Penelope Spheeris about the Los Angeles Punk Rock scene.

If you liked all of those, I HIGHLY recommend 'Infamy'. Like I said, it's about street graffiti, and I knew absolutely nothing about the subject, but it really has made me appreciate it more. But more than anything, it's just an interesting watch.

Thanks. I will look for it.

_ "Religulous". A little biased but still entertaining. I find Bill Maher amusing. I remember a joke he told on his show that I thought was funny: "In Hollywood, everyone is doing their part for the environment. Even Vin Diesel who decided to change his name for Vin Ethanol.":hehe:

_ "Tyson". Another great boxing documentary about that guy who cameoed in "The Hangover":cwink::woot:

_ "The Unknown Peter Sellers". A good doc about an actor that I admire very much. Specially in two of my favorite films: "Dr. Strangelove" and "Being There."

I loved Religulous. One of my favorites, actually. :cwink:

Frazetta: Painting with Fire http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0363621/

A great overview of one of the best fantasy painters/artists ever.

I really enjoyed this one!

Dogtown and Z-Boys was a fun and fascinating surprise.

I strongly recommend Hoop Dreams...it totally sucked me in. Great story.

I wish I could remember this one extremely intense Vietnam War documentary I saw a couple of years ago...had me glued to the TV screen...

My Best Fiend is great, probably my favorite of all time.

More Than a Game is must if you like basketball. It's not quite as good as Hoop Dreams, but it flies by, which is always the sign of a good documentary.

_ I liked "Bowling for Columbine" and "Fahrenheit 911". And I enjoyed "Super Size Me" for what it was.

Yeah, those were good too. The funny thing about Super Size Me, is that it made me crave McDonalds more after watching it, and I went and got a Big Mac. No joke.

Edit: Damn it! Even after I talked about Super Size Me in this thread, I'm now craving McDonalds. Going for #1.

Haha:woot: I know what you mean, those Big Macs are addictive.

I'm not much of a documentary watcher but I just watched Exit Through The Gift Shop and that was incredible. I'm about to watch Following Sean soon.

In 1969, director Ralph Arlyck filmed an intimate conversation with 4-year-old Sean Farrell -- the son of free-spirited parents living in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district -- who talked openly about smoking pot and living with drug addicts. Thirty years later, Arlyck returns to San Francisco to find out what became of Sean and his family -- and in the process, reflects on his own strange journey that cuts across generations and cultures.

And oh, I also watched Catfish. Pretty interesting and a good film.

Looking forward to seeing "Inside Job", narrated by Matt Damon.

Top 5 Favorites:

1. Grizzly Man
2. Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room
3. The King of Kong
4. Man on Wire
5. Dogtown and Z-Boys

It's not a movie, but the Planet Earth TV series is incredible.

I don't think I saw "Dear, Zachary" mentioned on here yet. I believe you can still find it on Netflix Instant Queue, but don't spoil it for yourself by reading the synopsis. It's really enthralling. Sad and uplifting at the same time. Very memorable.

I didn't know about it. Thanks for the info.

No problem! And as for the most recent Docs I watched...

"Exit Through The Gift Shop"
&
"Bigger, Faster, Stronger"

Both were very good.

Touching the Void is still the best documentary I've ever seen. The reenactments are mind boggling.
