The Earthquake Thread

The juggernaut figure is poorly designed, almost as badly designed as the X3 Phoenix figure, not meant to stand up

so yea, san jose and the bay area got rocked tonight with a 5.6

i was at work, at the mall when it happened. really close to the epicenter. i actually didn't feel it (i don't tend to feel earthquakes - i didn't feel the loma prieta quake in '89 either), but the mall was shaking HARD. luckily, there were no injuries, and no damage reported to this point, although when it was going on, there was no way of knowing at the time. the mall was rocking very hard, and very violently. people were scrambling around, getting all worked up. the ceiling of the mall was looking like it was going to collapse, with how violently it was shaking, and watching sheetrock and debris fall from the ceiling didn't help, especially with hearing the shaking through the rafters.

they ended up evacuating the mall and shutting it down. they eventually let us back in so that we could close our stores. no aftershocks, at least nothing you can feel. the news reports about 15+ 2.0's, but those hardly count.

any other bay area people that felt this one?

California's had a lot of moderate earthquakes lately. Good. Release the pressure on our fault lines and stave off the "Big One"

Wow. Mother natures is raping cali right now.

it was big.

i was there for the loma prieta quake in '89, though i was only 6. i didn't feel that quake, but i knew something bad was happening.

but honestly, i've never been so scared in a quake like i was tonight. i was in the food court, and heard a rumbling, and thought there was something crazy going on in pretzelmaker. i looked over, and all the glass cases were shaking, but the employees were just standing there. i started seeing some people start freaking out, and i just thought to myself "oh ****..." and looked up at the ceiling when it really hit, and watching the ceiling shake the way it did, and hearing everything rattling around in the area around me, it seemed like the ceiling was going to collapse on me. after it stopped, everyone started running around trying to get out of the mall, and merchants were closing their stores, so i ran back to mine to make sure my employee and customers were okay. we cleared the store and got out, and all the phones were out. i couldn't get ahold of anyone for about 20 minutes to half hour.

it's the biggest earthquake in the bay area since the '89 quake, which was a 7.1 i think. this one was 5.6, but felt like a 6+

i just want to know how i don't feel these things. when i first realized what happened, i stood still, conciously trying to feel it, to see just how big this one was. i couldn't feel any shaking, but watching the ceiling, and watching debris fall off of it, i knew that this wasn't one i wanted to stand around for.

i'm just glad that now after all is said and done, that nobody was hurt. but it was definately enough to spook me a bit.

mHM... how is your hearing?

I mean... for the equilibrium and so.

there is an organ in your auditive sistem that alerts you about movement and equilibrium.

oh yea? never knew about that.

my hearing is pretty good.

i've been well aware of what was going on in both big earthquakes, i just haven't really physically felt them. tonight's quake, for example, i only felt a minor rolling motion when i had gotten under the table in the food court. but the place was definately shaking a LOT more than what i was feeling.

the '89 quake, i'm not so sure i felt ANY movement at all. the only movement i recall was an aftershock the next day while i was at school.

We had two huge ones here in Southern Cal about 14 years ago or so, one in the desert and one in Big Bear, both within hours of each other, which was freaky because they weren't connected they said if I remember correctly. I got shook up, but my baby sister who was like two was clapping her hands as the entertainment center swayed over her head.
