The FACEBOOK Thread - Part 2

I wonder how some people have over 1000 friends. Is it that they friend their whole school/ college or is it that they subscribe to something that can boost your friend numbers?

Someone with 1000+ friends usually is a semi celebrity of sorts whom everyone wants to friend.

Although I do have friends with 800 + friends and they're regular people who are just very friendly and get along with everyone they meet.

So I guess what I'm questioning is someone who is not very popular with 1000+ friends. How did they get that?

Because a lot of people treat Facebook like it's MySpace and they'll friend request people that they don't even know because they think they're hot.

i just wanna throw this out there

i have 923 friends i know all of them. more than half are relatives fwiw

Wowzers! I barely have 100 friends on facebook. Social Networking fail. :csad:

Honestly, the thing that sucks about Facebook is that no one really talks much to anyone else anymore. Most times you can only friend request someone you know, and alot of people only want close friend or relatives on their profile. That's fine, but I thought these sites existed so you can meet new people and interact. I miss Myspace and preferred that to Facebook. Facebook is rather useless, but I met a ton of people off Myspace. Maybe back then social networking was newer and more fun? I'm not sure.

I think 1000+ friends is starting to become the norm, especially for girls. Facebook has been around since 06/07, so it's not surprising many have accumulated larger quantities of 'friends' over time.

I use it for friends from partying and college. I'd never add family on there... seems like a bad idea. Those tagged pics are gonna be trouble.

I have about 170 friends, I used to have over 300 from pretty much everyone at my old High School but I got rid of them because I barely knew them.

Facebook isn't about meeting new people. It's about keeping in touch with people you already know or vaguely know through work/school.Always has been. MySpace was for meeting new people. That's why Facebook doesn't easily allow you to find total strangers, everything is centered around people/stuff you already know, and why most people try to keep their profiles private from the general public.

Yeah, I should've specified 1000+ friends in a short time. I can completely understand someone acquiring that many since 06, especially if you're in a job or school where you do meet and get to know a lot of people.

I'm guessing that in a short time if you accumulate that many, then you're just friending random people. I never do that. I only friend people I know, and those with whom I've actually had a conversation at some length. I hesitate to friend people usually if I've only met them and spoken rather shortly with them. If it's been a long enough conversation then it might be ok, or if I've had several short conversations with them over a period of time.

If I'm just introduced to a person and only shake their hand and there's no chat, then I won't even bother. I usually don't even remember these people anyway. Someone will normally at least know me. It wouldn't be a case of "hey I met you at such and such a party/ place..."

I used to have 200+ friends when in college, but then I cancelled account for few years...and restarted it and now have about 50ish.

I have more contacts on Linkedin than facebook. I only facebook with family and friends I trust.

I honestly never knew that. I lumped all these sites together. But,still, even if you don't know people it's nice to make new "friends" on Facebook. At least,I would think?

Same.

Timeline is absolutely horrible. It's so disorganized and disjoined. There's no simplicity in it's design.

I'm dredding the day it's switches over.

I don't mind Timeline. Took a little bit to get used too.

Because a lot of people treat Facebook like it's MySpace and they'll friend request people that they don't even know because they think they're hot.

I have a friend that does that. He has well over a 1000 friends.

I'm about to hit 500 friends.

I only have 11 friends on Facebook with no desire to add anymore unless they're people I know well in real life. I have my close friends, a couple people I've met through them who I've hung out with a few times, and the other night I added an old friend who I recently got back in touch with. I don't use my real name or picture. I just use Facebook to share links and videos with my friends pretty much.

I have 107 friends, and it's seeming like far too many. I might separate my profile into two of them, and give myself a professional one for networking.

And MySpace failed because there were an increasing number of strangers that ended up being stalkers, kidnappers, molesters, etc.

I remember MySpace's popularity going down not only because of Facebook and everything more increasingly complex, but also because of all the news stories of girls meeting guys over myspace and then getting kidnapped/etc.

I occasionally get friend requests from people I've never heard of before or who don't even have any mutual friends in common. Even if we have mutual friends, but I don't know them, then I ignore their requests. I'm not on FB to make friends with random people online.

Supposedly, they were going to force timeline on everyone at 2:00 today. Nothing has happened to my profile yet.

My ass. Weren't they going to force Timeline on us at the beginning of February?

I got used to seeing timeline on others' profiles that I willingly switched over to it last week. As with all changes to Facebook, you get used to it.

I think they keep saying they're going to make it mandatory just to get people to switch over to it voluntarily.
