Day 54

Allright, it's basically 54 days until halloween.

I've decided to post my recommendations of the greatest genre in all of cinema these 54 days.

First up...
black_sabbath.jpg

Black Sabbath
aka The Three Faces of Terror
aka Tre volti della paura, I

Starting this off with a bang!
I highly recommend this one. It's in my top five alltime favorites. It can be hard to find sometimes, but I guarantee you will find it worthwhile when you do.

It's one of those triliogy type movies with three small stories making up the whole movie. "Drop in the Bucket" is by far the scarriest of the three, and honestly the dread it invokes is not topped in any movie. It's great too because it has Frankenstein (Boris Karloff) himself giving introductions between the three stories.

IMO, this is Bava's best work.

Yes Yes Yes! This movie literally turned our house upside down once in the 1960's. Our entire family, minus my mother, was deeply engrossed in this movie one night. My brother Bruce, five years older that I, was known to be a big chicken when it came to scary movies. I was staring at him to see if he was covering his eyes, but his eyes were wide open. What I did'nt know is that he was staring at our older brothers back and not the screen. Just then, the dead ladys' face popped on the screen and our older brother jumped, which left Bruce staring the dead woman in the face. He screamed so loud that my mother fainted in the next room. She had no idea what happened til later. Dena Pratt

HAHA! I found that quote for this movie on IMDB's forums.

Two Thousand Maniacs - Directed by Herschell Gordon Lewis

Six teenagers from the North stop in the town of Pleasant Valley, Florida while on vacation. The town is busy having it's Centennial Celebration, commemorating when everyone in the town was killed by Union troops during the Civil War. The ghosts come back every hundred years and seek revenge for their deaths by luring any Yankee into the town.

The film builds for at least a half-hour, until during a normal talking scene, one character gets an arm chopped off, which culminates in a barbeque set to the tune of "Rollin' in My Sweet Baby's Arms".

Other festivities in the celebration include a drawing and quartering, a barrel roll where the barrel is lined on the inside with nails, and the "Old Teeterin' Rock" which offers a twist on the dunk tank- the person is secured underneath an elevated platform which has a 300 pound boulder sitting on it. Whomever gets the rock to fall off the platform wins. The person strapped underneath loses.

Enjoy!

I don't watch trailers to movies I've already seen.

Black Sabbath is pretty good, but I prefer Black Sunday

Day 53(sorry I was gone for the weekend)

talescryptdvd.jpg

This next movie is a little known gem. It has all the phsychological horror you could ask for. The premise is pretty simple: Five people are trapped in a crypt and are shown their futures by the cryptkeeper. They are given the option of avoiding their fates - by avoiding living out the rest of their lives.

This is another anthology (I've always liked those), this time there are five stories. My favorite tale is the one called "Monkey's paw". Almost all of the tales have that weird Rod Serling ironic twist. Anyway, I highly recommend this movie. It is a highly underated British horror.

It's also note worthy to point out that this has a young and beatiful Joan Collins in it.

Day 52

pumpkinhead.jpg

Pumkinhead is one of those movies that you either love or hate. I like this movie mostly because of the ahtmosphere it creates. It's basically a twist of the old Faust legend. It's a story about revenge, and how you shouldn't mess with destiny. I recommend this, it's a great B Movie, that sadly hasn't yet gain a cult following. The monster is one of the coolest looking creatures in movies, and that's not suprising seeing as how it was created by Stan Winston (Aliens, Predator). Stan is also the director. Like I said, it is basically a big giant cliche, but it is brought to life through the creepy ahtmosphere.

Thanks D.E.

Next up, and to get us caught up...

Day 51

phantasm.gif

Written and directed by Don Coscarelli, Phantasm is one of those multigenre movies, but at it's core it's all horror. It's a great movie, and makes the viewer uncomfortable through claustriphobia. If you find funeral homes creepy, and want a good scare, then I suggest this movie. It uses imagery well, and IMO, is up there with Suspiria in terms of a "beautiful horror movie". This is the same director that done Bubba Ho-Tep, and it does have some ammusing parts in it. Reggie is great, and he's in pretty much all the sequals.

Nice work Man-Thing. Bava's awesome. I'm hoping that the original Black Christmas makes your list.

Day 50

dog-soldiers.jpg

Okay, if you like werewolf movies, then I think it's safe to say that you will like dog soldiers. It is written and directed by Neil Marshall (the descent). I haven't seen the descent, but I've heard it's actually pretty good. This movie isn't the greatest werewolf movie, but it is really good and gory. The werewolves look great, and it's one of those desperation movies in the same vein as "Night of the Living Dead". This was a direct to DVD release, but it will suprise you if you are a fan of the genre.

It will, don't worry.

Dog Soldiers are sex

btw since I doubt this flick is on your list. You should check out The Bunker. It's a good clostrophobic type flick. Though the DVD cover is a bit misleading:o

Number one on Man-Thing's list is a movie called "Atheist", it is about a world without Christianity...here is an image from it...

Great movie.

Day 49

00000286.jpg

Not really a horror movie, but it does have some creepy imagery. It is F.W. Murnau's film he wanted to do after the sucess of Nosferatu. If you liked Nosferatu, then you'll like this. It deals with the Devil and God placing a wager on the Earth based upon on man's deeds. It's kinda like Job in the OT, but more of a tragedy caused by pride and vanity. I highly suggest you watch this, it's a silent movie, but just like other greats such as Nosferatu and Hexen, this movie can still creep you out.

The greatest part is that you can watch it for free if you follow this link.

Gee wiz... I post a whole move ^^^ and do not get any response?!

anyway:p

Day 48

Jacob's Ladder

New York postal worker Jacob Singer is trying to keep his frayed life from unraveling. His days are increasingly being invaded by flashbacks to his first marriage, his now-dead son, and his tour of duty in Vietnam. Though his new wife tries to help Jacob keep his grip on sanity, the line between reality and delusion is steadily growing more and more uncertain.

A highly under rated movie, possibly the most under rated of all time. It has everything you want in a psychological horror film. Watch it!!!

I'll never forget when Tim Robbins goes to the operation in the hospital, how slowly things go from normal to horror as the gurney goes down the corridors. Jacob's Ladder is incredibly creepy. Danny Aiello was great in that film.
