Netflix show portraying Jesus as gay sparks anger in Brazil
gayjesus_750x422.jpg

A comedy on Netflix depicting Jesus as a gay man has prompted widespread anger in Brazil with almost two million people signing a petition calling on the streaming service to remove the show.

The First Temptation of Christ was created by Brazilian YouTube comedy group Porta dos Fundos and portrays Jesus bringing home his presumed boyfriend Orlando to meet the Holy Family.

An online petition on Change.org called for the 46-minute holiday special to be removed from Netflix and said it had offended Christians.

Porta dos Fundos, which won an International Emmy for its holiday special last year, said in an emailed statement that it “values artistic freedom and humour through satire on the most diverse cultural themes of our society and believes that freedom of expression is an essential construction for a democratic country.“

Netflix did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Brazil is a deeply religious country of about 200m people where homophobia is common and both the Catholic Church and the evangelical Christian movement frequently criticise LGBTQ+ rights.

President Jair Bolsonaro, who has described himself as a “proud” homophobe, suspended funding earlier this year for a series of films, including a handful with LGBTQ+ themes.

The decision was later struck down by a federal court.

On Twitter on Saturday, the president’s son Eduardo Bolsonaro called the Netflix film “garbage” and said the filmmakers “do not represent Brazilian society.”

The irony is, no Brazilian, or nobody around today actually knows the sexuality of Jesus. It’s all speculation anyway.

If you are a Christian yes you do. In the Bible it clearly says homosexuality is a sin and if you believe that Christ is Lord and blameless before all and is God in human form then you also know that he wouldn't contradict himself like that. So yes we do know his sexuality.

Also if what I just said offended some people then I apologize but as a Christian this is show is very offensive to me.

If homosexuality is such a sin, then why is it acceptable within branches of Christianity?

Furthermore, just because something is said or written, doesn’t make it truth. How many people under a Religious banner have committed heinous acts?

Need I state how many priests within the Vatican have been found guilty of pedophilia?

Maybe, just maybe Christ didn’t contradict himself, for it wasn’t Christ that wrote the Bible; unless I’m mistaken, the big book wasn’t said to have been written until some 200years after the death of Jesus, so it was written by mere men (who make mistakes anyway) who might have wanted to enforce certain beliefs for their own gains.

Thus, ultimately, nobody knows. I suppose there’s that added avenue that if homosexuality was such a bad thing, God wouldn’t have made it possible for a man to get erect over another man, would he?

To answer your first question homosexuality is preached upon as a sin in Christianity. However it is accepted because of the same reason why murders, prostitutes, thieves, rapist, lairs, and every last single person on this Earth because we all are sinners and we all fall short of the glory of God. Christ died on the cross and paid the price for our sins. There is hope and salvation for everyone if you come to Christ admit you are a sinner and repent and accept him in your heart. Many people who clam to be of God are not of Christ as you can see with some priests. However if you come to Christ and repent of your sins you are forgiven and there are plenty of examples of that in the Bible. Now as to also answer your question when you come to Christ you are to deny the flesh, and say no to sin and the devil. Even in a church if you are homosexual they will tell you this. Now can you be gay and still be a Christian? Yes but the hard part is you are not suppose to act upon those desires anymore.
Being a of the World is ease but being of Christ is hard because there are going to be times where tears will roll down your face as you say no to sin and yes to God. Once again being gay, a prostitute or anything doesn't mean Jesus will love you any less but he will refuse to leave you that way. And this isn't just about homosexuality it can be about a man/women who is having sex before marriage or in a relationship to some who is not their spouse or someone addicted to porn. If you come to Christ and get to know him you will see a change and he will speak upon your heart regardless of who you are and what you did.

Whats the point of preaching about it then it they’re just going to accept it anyway? That’s a little hypocritical, don’t you think?

Where do you stand on homosexuality?

Christ died on the cross and paid the price for our sins.
I’m pretty sure he died because the Romans didn’t like him very much. Why would Christ, or anyone for that matter need to die for sins that haven’t even been committed yet?

You’re (seemingly) taking everything stayed in the bible as literal. It’s not. It can’t be. It’s more a basis for metaphor. Do you think Adam and Eve were indeed the first people?

Do you think Noah built an arc that housed one of every species and then let humanity everywhere else die? If that’s truly the case then Noah reproduced with his family and we’re all inbred.

And this isn't just about homosexuality it can be about a man/women who is having sex before marriage or in a relationship to some who is not their spouse or someone addicted to porn.
Porn as we know it didn’t originate as we know it, and came long before Jesus. Likewise, Adam and Eve didn’t get married, so how does marriage factor in here? It’s just another illusion created by the church.

To answer your first question I do believe homosexuality is wrong but that doesn't mean I am going to love or treat that person any differently then I would treat my best friend or my brother. Once again Jesus showed us and thought us how to love all people be it that they are different from you or not. Read the bible Jesus ate and drank with tax collectors, prostitutes, adulterers, and many more. All because the bible says something is wrong doesn't mean you love a person or treat them differently. To be honest you love them more and treat them as you would a brother or sister. And all you can do is pray. For example I have a friend who is Muslim should I treat him as my enemy or should I treat him as my friend and show him love and respect. Jesus has taught me to love everyone as if they were my brother, to treat them with kindness and if someone does you wrong to turn the other check and that is what I am going to do. I am not perfect by any means so who am I to judge.

To answer your other question yes I do take the bible literally. Expect for the parables.

Why do you consider homosexuality to be wrong though? Because you think it is, or because a book says that it is? If homosexuality is accepted if it’s deemed as wrong, then why bother mentioning that it’s wrong in the first place? Just let it be.

Has Jesus taught you that though? I’m not remotely religious, but I think of myself as a good person and I treat people with kindness. I didn’t need Jesus to work that out!

Jesus, ultimately hasn’t taught you anything - Jesus didn’t write the Bible. The Bible, historically, was written after the death of Jesus, and it was written by mortal men who make mistakes, and expand the truth. It’s like Chinese whispers. The Bible is (at least to me) a book of tales that have been translated as factual.

Let us break down a few biblical events, shall we? Take into account everything you know (rather than believe) about how the world works.

We’ll start with the birth of our lord and savour; a miracle birth that took place in a barn, visited by three kings who followed a star.

That’s the literal belief, whereas a more logical one would be that Mary was a ****e (prostitute) who forgot to visit the clinic for her pills that week, and gave birth to an illuminate child. The three wise men would just have been chance travellers.

How about Moses? A man that scaled a mountain, and spoke to a burning bush. It’s far more plausible that Moses climbed to such a height that the air thinned and he hallucinated.

Then we’ve got Noah; a man that built a huge boat to save a pair of every animal species from around the world from a great flood. Now, that’s every animal. Two of each.

Noah was likely a resident of the Middle East, so I’m curious how Polar Bears of the Artic Circle, Penguins of Antarctica, Koala Bears of Australia, Alligators from what is now known as California and even the Dodo Bird (RIP) managed to reach Noah.

There’s also the issue, as stated before, that if Noah and his family were the sole survivors of the great flood (as the Bible would have us believe) then the only way we could be here is if, post flood, Noah and his Sons reproduced with Mrs Noah until there were enough girls to thin out the bloodline. We’re thus all inbred and would have a whole host of deformities.

I don't really have time to debate this with any more today. Although I did enjoy it. All I can say and leave you with is this. Good works alone don't get you into heaven. The only way to heaven is through Jesus Christ. You have to accept him as your Lord and Savior and believe that he is the Son of God and repent of your sins and try to live a Christ life knowing that you will stumble and fall short but are forgiven by him because of what he did for you. That's the only way to heaven because there is going to come a day where every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

That’s okay, there was no urgency. I can wait until you do have time to cover the other points raised.

But Jesus has already died for our sins, so ultimately it shouldn’t matter what we do in this life as god is all forgiving anyway, right?

By the logic you’re using, anyone can do anything so long as they repent afterwards and then all is forgiven; murderers, rapists, petty thieves, accountants, they can all screw people over and yet be forgiven if they repent their sins before death. That almost feels like a cheat.

I’ll wait to hear back from you I guess, as I am genuinely intrigued how you view the biblical stories I referenced above. I wouldn’t have thought anyone here would take the Bible as literal ... at least you’re not a believer in the flat earth theory.

All the more reason for a sequel.
