''The girl is as clever as she is pretty.'' the Margaery Tyrell thread

Yep, she also goes by Dany in some circles... wait does she anymore? I know GRRM will write "Dany." But I can only recall Viserys calling her "Dany" in the first season. Does anyone else still do it to her face?

Well... DANY... doesn't have anyone close to her. Say what you will, she's not close to anyone around her right now. Viserys was her older brother....

Kind of like when Ned called King Robert...'Robert' as if titles don't matter... Robert even gets a bit flustered when Ned treats him as a king in the crypts of Winterfell...

Robb Stark says it to Theon as well... "you don't have to treat me that way when people aren't around" ...

It's a familiarity thing.

Dany will never be close to anyone until Jorah finds a way to harness his Power Cosmic

No one ever called Margaery 'Marge' though, did they?

I'm disappointed we never got to see what Margaery's scheme to take on the Sparrows was.

Anne Boleyn convinced Henry VIII to shun the Pope and the Catholic faith and become head of his own religion, the Church of England. I imagine Margaery's plan would have been to get her brother safely back to Highgarden, convince King Tommen to assume control of the faith and then send the Tyrell army in to deal with the militants. The High Sparrow would have been finished either way, she would have definitely double crossed him.

Margaery's story echoed a combination of Catherine of Aragon with Anne Boleyn. Catherine married Prince Arthur, who died, so she then married the brother, Prince Henry and became Queen regardless when he was put on the throne. Margaery did the same with Joffrey and Tommen. Anne and her brother George Boleyn were arrested for multiple reasons, two being incest and high treason. George was supposedly also accused of being gay, like Ser Loras.

Was anyone else reminded of Richard III when Cersei took the Iron Throne? With the young king Edward V dead and no line of succession the crown fell back to his uncle, Richard. With Tommen dead and no heir, it fell back to his mother (although she has no bloodclaim). Neither Richard III nor Cersei have good reputations and considering neither have heirs to follow their reign, they don't appear to have a long term goal about succession. It was never clear who Richard wanted to follow him, and I doubt Cersei knows who will follow her. It's the selfishness and 'living in the now' short term attitude they both have which is their downfalls.

Margaery planned ahead and plotted out the game before she played it. Unfortunately for her, a thoroughly planned scheme can fall to pieces when the other players take instant action and don't have patience to play.

Cersei made up the rules as she went, which made her unpredictable and wild and incompatible with Margaery.

Margaery moved a chess pawn having already worked out how to checkmate the King. Cersei doesn't play chess; Cersei knocks the table over and kills the other player.

It has been mentioned by GRRM that the historical Richard III was one of the inspirations for Stannis Baratheon, so there is some connections there.

Oh yes, I can definitely see Richard III in Stannis. In the War of the Roses on the Plantagenet side the three brothers were Edward IV, George and Richard. They fought and overthrew the lame king Henry VI and Edward succeeded him. George was killed by his brothers for treason and Richard supposedly killed his nephews to take his brother's crown.

Robert, Renly and Stannis are very much Edward, George and Richard, with Tywin being The Kingmaker (Earl of Warwick).

I love how Game of Thrones is positively engaging a new audience with English history.

While I'm thinking about it, Margaery's grandmother, Olenna Tyrell reminds me a lot of Elizabeth Woodville, the widow of Edward IV. When her sons, the Princes in the Tower, are never seen again she forms an alliance with Henry Tudor, ancestor of a previous royal family who had been exiled abroad and returns to England with a foreign army.

Queen Elizabeth switched support from her House of York in favour of the Tudors, more or less out of revenge for what happened to her sons. Olenna is doing the same by linking with Daenerys after what happened to her son and grandchildren.

Daenerys basically represents Henry Tudor, who gathered the support of the French and the Welsh and waited until the Yorkists and Lancastrians finished feuding before invading to claim the throne. This fits with what I was saying about Cersei representing Richard III, as Richard was on the throne when Henry invaded.

I'm very sad that Margaery died in this episode. I really thought that she had a long game planned after she told Queen of Thorns to leave King's Landing, and she did played the game brilliantly by making High Sparrow an ally instead of an antagonist in the struggle for power. But Cersei decided not to play this game any longer when her son nullified the Trial by Combat, and killed all her rivals instead.

I think Margaery have beaten Cersei in a game with rules, but Cersei made her own rules and won because of it.

It is fitting, then, to see Dany about to face off against the new Queen of Westeros, the battle of two strong-willed ladies, although I'm not sure how Cersei can defend against a foreign threat without a big army and money to finance it.

Marg would've been good if the High Sparrow had followed her words and got out of the church but nooooo.

Hopefully Olenna can take Dany under her wing as she did her grand-daughter.

The more I think about it, the more it makes sense for Littlefinger to change sides and put the Knights of the Vale in the service of the dowager queen, either through marrying Cersei himself or orchestrating a marriage between Cersei and Sweet Robin. That and an alliance with House Greyjoy, who are probably even more savage now without the moderating influence of Yara and her close advisors, and House Whoever of the Riverlands would make the Lannister/Baratheon house a credible threat.

i could totally see Baelish proposing an alliance of marriage with Cersei

:hehe:

Robin is not sweet.

He's sweet like custard, and equally as effective in combat.
Custard is useful in battle. Did you Canadians never have custard fights at school? :csad:

We can't; it freezes solid in our cold weather and becomes lethal.
GRRM/D&D need to be made aware of this advanced battle strategy, would be great in the North.

The overall acumen we have seen from Ned and Robb Stark and to a certain extent Jon Snow makes me think they need to learn basic strategy first. :o
