The Gray Man (Gosling, Evans, Russos)

I remember back in 18/19 a lot of people were claiming The Russos would be the next Chris Nolan. Lolz.

Mmm. I might cop hate for this but I was sort of hoping this would be more like John Le carre than Michael bay. Maybe they just put all the dumb moments in the trailer.

geez with a cast and creative team like this this would have made a super awesome oozes with cool slow burn of a spy film. But maybe the film will be completely different

I still can't get over how bland this trailer is. Evans and Gosling look like they're hamming it up and having a good time while this droll, super serious crescendo just keeps repeating over and over again. And what is with that unearned Cap vs Bucky/Iron Man Rocky III punch that closes out the trailer?

Wouldn't pay to see this in theaters, but I will check it out on Netflix.

That’s how I feel about the majority of movies that come out in theaters (regardless of them being made for streaming or the big screen).

Yeah. Again I'm sure the movie will be fine at the worst but that was a terrible line.
The Russos, Markus, and Freely have written better before. I'm surprised a line made it through the editing.

On a slightly related note, I completely spaced that the Russos also did TWS which is my favorite MCU movie and one of my top 5 favorite live action SH movies. Don't know how I did that. But anyway, this looks like the worst parts of The Winter Soldier to me

I think this year has been pretty good for theatrical offerings.
Most years are imo. Unless we're talking strictly about blockbusters. To each their own, but I feel when people say otherwise it's usually one of those "Close theaters and move everything to streaming because I don't wanna leave my house" type people/deals.

Plenty of good theatrical movies. At least imo.

I wasn't expecting a slow burn spy movie at all. Not saying the Russos can't do that, but idk. I just didn't expect that when they announced they were working on a 200m movie. That's just not that common.

I was hoping for it to be more in line with the Craig Bond movies in terms of tone at least. But that doesn't seem to be the case

I was expecting them to be aiming a little higher than Extraction with that cast and all the hype tbh, but…oh well. I’m sure I’ll enjoy it and forget all about it the next week like the majority of Netflix’s original content lol. Gotta say though, releasing this the day after MI7’s trailer did them no favors at all. Instead of looking like the big blockbuster event they’ve been hyping, MI7 truly makes it look exactly like we’d expect a direct-to-streaming production to look in comparison to an actual blockbuster. Not sure where that budget went, but it’s not on the screen.

Coming directly after that Mission Impossible trailer really hurt, from the scope, to the cinematography to the action there is a huge gulf, and I'm a big fan of the action in the Russo's other movies but this only looks to have 1 major set piece, the tram train one, and the rest looks like a few punch-ups, where as big blockbusters like Mission Impossible have multiple big sequences. That aside I think it looks like it will still be an entertaining espionage actioner with a great cast.

I've only seen 2 so far this year in truth, I missed Ambulance and I'm not going to get around to Doctor Strange 2.

Looks decent. If anything, it's made me more excited for Havoc.

Yeah I’ve just seen The Batman and Doctor Strange 2 in theaters this year.

You know, I saw a bts look at the Jamie Foxx action movie coming to Netflix and it looks much sharper and interesting than this. Everything just looks so bland, even the humor.

I'm not sure why they picked that scene to showcase, the corridor fight looked like a walk-through rather than a badass action scene.

Finally saw the trailer and it does look generic but plenty of action movies are. The first John Wick was very generic story wise but still remains the best in the franchise for me.

I'd say John Wick did rise above the genericness with the world building and the fact that it was revenge over a dog not a family or whatever.

But I get what you're saying.

That being said, John Wick elevated whatever genericness by having: a) a really interesting world to explore b) most importantly really kick ass action sequences. Ones we don't see in many mainstream US films.

Gray Man, at least judging the trailer, doesn't have that at all. The stuntwork, the set ups, the creativity, and the meticulous that makes John Wick's action stand out. But we'll see

Yeah I get what you're saying. But any movie is generic when it boils down to it that was my point really.

I thought the action looked decent in the trailer and with such a good cast performances are a given. So we'll see.
