Ian McKellen MUST return as Gandalf.

Andy Serkis MUST return as Gollum.

Hugo Weaving MUST return as Elrond.

They will probably return if Jackson is on board. Only Bilbo will need a new actor since Bilbo was much younger than in LotR.

I really don't think it would be a problem to bring Ian Holm back to play Bilbo. Over the 60 yrs time his looks didn't change much at all from Hobbit to LOTR. And in the Hobbit, Biblo didn't have many extrenious action scenes that Ian and CGI can't handle.

Exactly. I hear a lot of people say that they'd need to recast them, but really they would all look exactly as they did in the beginning of the LOTR Trillogy.

Galdalf takes FOREVER to age visually, Elrond is just the same, and as you pointed out, Bilbo looked at the beginning of LOTR "not a day older" than he did when he first got the ring...which IS The Hobbit.

In fact, I would not want to see The Hobbit if the original actors did not come back to reprise their roles. It just wouldn't fit with the universe of the LOTR trillogy.
