The Horror Thread - Part 1

Just watched Magic Magic.

First of all...not only is that a horrible name for a movie (that has really nothing at all to do with the actual film)...but the DVD cover is AWFUL. Everyone involved in this deserved better than that!!!

Many people would say that Magic Magic is not a horror film...but it has a little in common with movies like The Shining, so I'll throw it in as a psychological Horror. Juno Temple travels to meet up with her cousin Emily Browning and her friends in Chile (including Michael Cera as a pretty creepy dude, he's great in this). When Browning has to leave, Juno decides that she really, really doesn't want to be on vacation with these people.

A lot of people seem to be HATING this movie...mostly because not a lot happens and what does happen is vague or seen through the eyes of an unreliable narrator. To me though, this is a film that other directors should study the hell out of when developing their characters. Cera's character really isn't the focal point...what happened in his life prior to this movie doesn't matter, nor do his dreams, fears, personal struggles etc. These subjects never really come up...except that somehow by the end of the film we understand so much about this guy! In fact, all of the characters are developed subtly in such a way that we understand the decisions they make on what to do and say etc. To me, this GREATLY improves a movie! I think that before filming starts, every character should have their lives mapped out, even if the details are never mentioned in the film. Maybe a character was hurt when they were a child, which would inform their reactions as an adult etc. This helps create a more realistic character. Magic Magic is all about the who and the why, but instead of explaining it like a hammer to the head, it just drops you into the world these people live in for awhile and lets you watch the consequences of their actions.

I am thinking about seeing you're next tonight at the 10pm showings. This movie has been getting rave reviews. How come there is not a thread here talking about the movie?

You're Next was okay. Some really cool gore and kills, particularly one involving a [blackout]blender[/blackout] which was so awesome that the movie is practically worth it for that moment alone, ha. but the movie was so tediously paced, but not that good edge of yer seat tension....more of a "okay, i get it, lets move along". I never really cared that much about any of the characters either. But it wasnt a bad movie. May be better off as a rental.

I just finished Donner Pass and now I'm watching the cheesy 80's b-movie Return to Horror High.

Donner Pass wasn't bad but it was light on the actual kill scenes. And some of the characters were incredibly dumb and one or two probably deserved to die.

Horror High is just a stupid comedy-horror movie that is so over the top in the gore it's laughable, which I think is the point.

There's a lot of nudity and absurdity which I was expecting but it's a lot more of a comedy than I thought it was going to be.

by the way, there is a blog called HORROR MOVIE A DAY. the dude watched and reviewed one horror movie a day for like 6 years. all of the reviews are on his site. so you can look up a specific movie or just randomly find stuff....its a good guide.

Review is in the sig, but You're Next was ****ing awesome. Not all that scary, but tons of fun!

Just got back from You're Next

Like The Cabin in the Woods and All The Boys Love Mandy Lane...this is a beloved recent horror film that sat on the shelf for years waiting to get released (Mandy Lane is apparently FINALLY getting released, after 7 years!) The hype has been incredible for these films...and with TCITW not only meeting, but exceeding the expectations of most Horror fans...You're Next was really going to have to bring it.

I liked it. It was fun. I don't feel blown away or like I just saw the best Horror movie in years. It was certainly better than most slasher and home invasion movies (though it was no Funny Games), and it maintained a sense of fun throughout, despite the subject matter. Not overly gory, but I don't think the kills were very inventive (not that they have to be...I have read several reviews stating that they were ingenious, but most were pretty run of the mill). My theater had about 25 people in it at a 9:25 pm Friday night showing.

I just got back from seeing You're Next. I normally don't curse unless I am mad but to quote the Spill guys when they rate movies, to me this was " Some Old Bulls**t". On top of that, the Cinemark theater only had XD showings so instead of paying the normal 8.75, I had to pay 10.75 for this. I was pumped by the reviews so I paid the extra money. Boy did I get tricked on this movie.

The story is paper thin and cliche and the acting is okay at best. You don't care about the characters expect for the person that ends up being the hero ( I wouldn't spoil it for those that haven't seen it). Worst of all, the kills are forgettable and the movie isn't scary. I don't know why critics and some fans are ranting and raving about this movie as it does nothing new with the horror/ home invasion genre. Hell, I liked The Purge better than this. At least that movie had a interesting premise behind it.

I would give it 2 and a half stars out of 5.

Yeah...You're Next definitely isn't scary. At times it felt more like an action movie than a Horror.

I feel like the hype is what is hurting it for some of us. It isn't THAT good or THAT different from things we see all the time. It's just a fun, pretty well done horror film (which, admittedly is rare). However, like The Conjuring, the fact that it doesn't embarrass itself by insulting the audience puts it above most Horror films that make it to theaters. I wouldn't put it in my top 5 favorite Horror movies of 2013 though.

Also...regarding You're Next. I won't spoil the ending...but the ending I thought was coming would have been better than what actually happened.

Kind of what I thought. The home invasion movies are getting almost as annoying as the jump scare ghost movies.

Whats there to look forward to in horror? Carrie looks lame to me and I hated Insidious. Monkey Paw???

So that's one who loved it followed directly by one who hated it post. That's definitely telling.

Insidious 2 doesn't look appealing at all. I hated the first, and the trailer just sounds loud, and doesn't show it to be anything that the first didn't have.

I'm debating on going to see You're Next tonight. Not sure if I want to or not, but the reviews seem pretty mixed.

As far as movies that aren't out yet. Um...Byzantium looks good and isn't out on DVD for awhile (not being released theatrically). I've seen The Conspiracy, which is a pretty good found footage horror that should be on DVD soon. I hear that the sci-fi film Europa Report has Horror elements. There's probably a few more that I'm forgetting.

The problem I have with Carrie is that they show you the entire movie, including the "money shots" in the previews. It's a bizarre marketing ploy of "Remember when you liked this...here it is again!" They seem to not realize that the vast majority of theater goers under the age of 35 (maybe even older) have not seen the original or read the book.

I didn't care for it but maybe you will like it. If you do decide to see it, I suggest lowering your expectations. The critic and fan reviews are very misleading. They act as though this movie a revival of the horror/ home invasion genre but it really doesn't do anything new. Everything in this movie has been done before. I would have dug this movie IF it had a great atmosphere, creative kills, and was genuinely creepy, but I felt as though it didn't have any of those things.

Carrie has a horrid tell all trailer.... but I am looking forward to it.

^
I agree. I can't believe they spoiled that much in the Carrie trailer. I think they must have assumed that everyone knew Carrie's story already and would maybe go to see a new interpretation. But there's probably a generation or maybe two now that might not be familiar with either the book, the original film, or even the TV remake.

Also, I saw You're Next. It's one of the best horror films I've seen in a long time. I loved the animal masks, very creepy and iconic. I also thought the story was pretty good. Sharni Vinson is awesome.

I'm watching this... thing, I'm not sure what to call it, it's just Stephen King talking about horror movies. I don't think I'd call it a documentary, but maybe it is? It's on OnDemand. It's pretty entertaining getting his point-of-view on various horror films.

Oh god, I just watched The Uninvited.

Awful, awful, awful. Not even the wonderful Elizabeth Banks could save it.

1/10.

Don't get me wrong, I love my teen horror movies... but damn.

The Carrie remake has Chloe Moretz and Julianne Moore starring. I'll see it just for those two (I love them as actresses). I just watched Audition and damn was that creepy. The entire movie is chilling, but there is one scene in particular that will make you skwirm in your seat and/or want to throw up.
