Watched Stephen King's Sleepwalkers (1992) for the first time. I've been putting it off for a long time because it has a terrible reputation and has a 5.1 on IMDB, not to mention that it's not based on a Stephen King story (King wrote the original screenplay). But I was shocked to discover that it's actually a cool little gem of a movie, and pretty much checks all the boxes of what I love about the horror genre. I still don't get the hate for Mick Garris as a director. I've never disliked anything he's done. I'd give this a 6.5/10.

I've only seen 2 of Mick Garris' movies. This and Critters 2. I enjoyed both.

I have two of those on that 50 movie set I just got :D

Just need to find one with Christopher Lee on the set. Seems hard to find the Hammer films on those sets here

Watching The Changeling on YouTube because those bastards won't give me a Blu Ray.

Time to harass Criterion again. :o

The 1980 movie with George C. Scott?

Watched The Sand (2015)

Actress Brooke Butler looked scorching hot in last year's All Cheerleaders Die. Apparently hot enough that I remembered her name when I saw her listed in this movie.

A group of college students are partying on the beach one night. They wake up and find that the sand is now "eating" people, and they can't walk on it to get off the beach without being killed. Decent enough concept.

A few spoilers from pretty early in the film. Nothing that I consider major or that will really spoil much.

First of all...the special effects are bad. But, this is a low budget indie, so I can pretty much overlook that. Not every film has a massive budget.

My problem is that the people all make really stupid decisions. For instance...when they first find out about the threat, they decide to take a nap to see if anyone shows up to help. Second, they throw all of their food onto the sand to test whatever it is that is out there. I won't spoil further...but it's shocking how long it takes them to notice basic things and how few good decisions are made.

By the way...it is mentioned that no one will come to help them because it is Spring Break, so the beach will be deserted. That's right...the BEACH...will be deserted...during SPRING BREAK. Someone didn't think this through.

The worst part is a REALLY BAD cameo from Jamie Kennedy. It's really, really cheesy. I could see if this movie was presented as a comedy then it might fit...but the tone tries to play it serious, while much of the dialogue is so cheesy that I'd like to assume that it was intentional.

In other words, not exactly a modern classic.

It Follows just got added to Netflix Australia. I've been wanting to watch that to see what all the fuss is about.

****, I love Netflix. I know it's kind of old hat to you guys, but it and other streaming services only came to Australia (legally) this past April, so I'm still super excited about the whole thing. :D

Watched Afflicted last night.

I thought it was very well done. Essentially a horror version of Chronicle. It is one of those movies that satisfies because it takes its premise and runs it through to its logical extreme and beyond.

I'll be seeing Dracula on Sunday and Halloween in a week at the theater!

I loved it ( I think I was the only one raving about it last year lol ) and yeah it's very logical and done well with it's premise.

Been watching some of my favorite horror films since its Halloween month. Killer Klowns from Outer Space. Trick R Treat. Hellraiser. Etc. Just finished watching Curse of Chucky. Wow! Loved it. Best Chucky film since the original. Glad to see it go back to more scary horror than horror comedy. I lost all hope after Bride and Seed. This was great!

Here's what I have watched the last few days -

10/20/2015 Dracula (1931) Bela Lugosi
10/21/2015 Dracula (1931) Carlos Villarías
10/22/2015 Dracula's Daughter (1936) Gloria Holden
10/23/2015 Son of Dracula (1943) Lon Chaney Jr.

Some interesting notes -

The two 1931 DRACULA movies were filmed at the same time. The Lugosi version was shot during the day....then at night, the Spanish language version was filmed on the same sets and with the same costumes and script. The Spanish language version is around 40 minutes longer due to the censors not cutting it up.

The movie DRACULA'S DAUGHTER is shot as a direct sequel to the Lugosi film....even though they are set in different centuries. At the end of Lugosi's DRACULA (which takes place in the late 1800's)....Drac kills Renfield (breaks his neck and then throws him down the huge stone staircase at Carfax Abbey) and then Professor Van Helsing (Edward Van Sloan) kills Dracula and sends John Harker and Mina away saying he will stay there a bit....at the beginning of DRACULA'S DAUGHTER, two policemen wandering through the Abbey, find the dead Renfield at the bottom of the stairs, and then Van Helsing (again played by Sloan) comes out and says he has just killed Dracula. The thing is, this movie then obviously takes place in the 1930's with it's use of cars and telephones and the way people dress.

I could have sworn I watched a couple more than this, but I'm blanking. Anyway, my October so far--

-- Halloween (original). Outside of the "characters make stupid stupid decisions" thing that's part and parcel of the genre, I liked it. Have to track down the others now as I hear they alter things quite a bit?
-- Fright Night (original). Took me a while to get used to the tone, but once I did I found it fun enough.
-- The Last House on the Left (remake). It was alright.
-- Scream. Always great.
-- It Follows. Just finished it then. Again, outside of the characters making stupid decisions thing and the total absence of parents questioning what the **** was going on, I really liked it.

There were a few others that I only made it part way into and thought "**** this", and there's a lot more on Netflix I'd like to watch (Insidious, Creep etc).

Anyone have any underrated horror movies to recommend?

For Halloween I'm doing a marathon with some friends.

Just some off the top of my head..

Afflicted
Dead Silence
The Guest (mostly for the Halloween setting)
House of the Devil
Maniac (original or remake)
Braindead
The Den
The Faculty
Grave Encounters
The Collector/Collection
Tucker and Dale Vs Evil

The Final Girls was really solid, nice addition to comedy and the hour genres.

I saw Tales of Halloween today and it was nothing more than a pale imitation of Trick R Treat. It wasn't straight out bad but it spend most of the movie playing it off as a joke.
