A movie doesn't raise over a billion dollars in profits just by pure hype alone,there has to be something else that keeps the general audience coming.

It might be hard for some fanboys to accept, but the general audience seems to like the movie...Mandarin twist notwithsanding.

I liked IM3 but I have to admit that if it is the best movie this year, this year is going to be a huge let down. Movies like MOS can't be just good because Superman needs to regain popularity. IM already has (well deserved) popularity.

I wasn't upset about the Mandarin twist purely because I haven't read many IM comic books and do not know much about the character. If they did it to Thanos or another villain....it would be another story.

By the way, it's not just fan boys complaining.

Of course its not just fanboys complaining. Thee will always be people who will dislike a movie, howeve the vast majority of the GA seems to eally like it. WHen a movie makes 1.1 billion dollars, it means heavy repeat business. People are going back to see the movie multiple times and families are going in droves. The movie has also done pretty well critically.

Even if I didn't know the Mandarin, I would've still not liked the twist. I wanted to see Iron Man up against a really big nemesis who could break him and destroy his whole life. That was something in the Iron Man comics that happened frequently even apart from Mandarin. The likes of Obadiah Stane and Justin Hammer did similar things to Stark and drove him to the bottle. Especially Stane.

Now of course they weren't going to go the alcoholic route. But Thor has had his Loki, and Cap has had his Red Skull. And in Batman, he's had his Joker, and MOS is going to have his Zod.

I just wanted IM to have a truly formidable foe and Guy Pearce didn't cut it. I thought that the way it was revealed with Trevor Slattery just seemed like a complete joke and didn't even seem to belong in this kind of movie. It's more like something you'd find in a spoof like Austin Powers or Get Smart.

And why I'm surprised about IM3 gaining the number 5 spot is that its reviews hasn't been anywhere near as universally lauded as films like the Avengers or Skyfall (which was knocked down to number 8). There are many other films which are way better than IM3 and ought to do a lot better.

You have a point about the Mandarin, I thought he was lying at first but then it got dragged on for too long and I accepted it. I admit was looking forward to the use of the rings though. Although I wasn't upset, I was mildly disappointed and the disappointment increased after a few days.

I loved the villain in Skyfall. Javier was amazing.

As much as people here seem to dislike the twist, it has not deterred people from seeing it over and over and liking it, as a Iron Man fan was I disappointed with the twist, for a moment, but it did not last long, in the end we got Mandarin in the form of Killian, whether it was the Mandarin everyone wanted or not, the Mandarin was there.
Overall it was a very enjoyable movie, the only hate I see anywhere is here, the GA loved the film, I mean for this movie to be out now 4 weeks and is still drawing large audiences speaks to the quality.

Where's this 'best movie of the year' claim coming from, i'm curious? I don't think even the most die hard iron man movies fans here( myself included) ever made this claim...

Kinda funny how everytime there's a cause for celebration regarding this movie, there's always someone coming around that feels the need to...remind us that this is NOT the best movie/ironman movie/cb movies...or don't forget that other movies don't need 3D or whatever.

In my humble opinion, there's more than just two categories for movies.It doesn't always have to be either an epic movie or a epic failure for a movie....GOOD movie is a perfectly legitimate category too. And good movies deserves their success too

The twist felt a bit spoof-like to me as well but I loved the film aside from that. Maybe they should have spoofed with a different guy so Mandarin could have been saved for another day & I thought Guy Pearce was fine but was built up more to be a secondary villain. I thought I might start suffering from some slight RDJ overexposure with this film but he's better than ever. That guy is just magic. Don't think I'll ever get bored of him in this role. And IM3 was always going to do massive numbers even with good-but-not-spectacular reviews coming off Avengers.

Chill. Grossing over a billion dollars just means that people liked the movie, coupled with great marketing and a worldwide awareness. Whether or not you consider it the 'best' movie of the year is relative (of course there's always the so-called critic ratings). I myself enjoyed it because I saw a lot of RDJ without the suit, a lot of witty one-liners from him and Jarvis (and made up for the lack of suit screentime in the 3rd act where there were suits everywhere). Now in terms of box office rankings I am happy that it is at #5, even though I loved Skyfall which, in itself, is a surprise hit so being bumped by IM3 didn't matter to me, I'm more sad that LOTR3 is again shoved even lower in the rankings.

But Killian did break Tony and destroy his life. The traumatic effect of almost dying in The Avengers had Tony on a downward spiral with PTSD and panic attacks, and then Killian swooped in and destroyed or took everything and everyone Tony valued from him. Tony's home was destroyed, all the tech he used as a cocoon along with it; Happy was nearly killed; Pepper was kidnapped and tortured; and even Rhodey was taken hostage. The company was still standing, but as most people understand there are very few realistic scenarios in which a multi-billionaire can be instantly stripped of all assets and rendered destitute.


By the end of the first act, Tony was bereft of everyone he loved, presumed dead and on the run from the Mandarin (Killian) and his soldiers. All he had was one malfunctioning suit of armor, a kid sidekick, a Dora the Explorer watch and a shack full of odds and ends. He was pretty much done in and only survived by his own ingenuity.

25M over the holiday weekend. Good showing for Mr. Stark and company. at this point the numbers are slightly behind IM1 for the same weekend. IM1 was at 258, after Memorial day and went onto make an additional 60M. By those numbers IM3 should end up at 420-430M domestic.

At first I hated the twist, but after thinking about it, we did get Mandarin, it may not have been the Mandarin that I grew up on, but hey, if other cmbs can make Ra's, Bane, and Talia Caucasian, a Doc Ock that isn't German (or at least with a German accent), Lizard/Dr. Conners with an Irish accent, an African American Kingipn, a Juggernaut that has an English accent, a Pyro that doesn't have one, Colossus from the U.S., and Wolverine that's 6' tall with an Australian accent, then this Mandarin really isn't all that bad.

To be fair, Wolverine as portrayed by Jackman (who is 6'2", actually) doesn't have an Australian accent. But I'm not disagreeing with you. And don't forget the Shakespearean actors playing Professor X and Magneto.

I agree. Stark went through much more in IM3 than his two previous movies imo, and for him to see Happy being hospitalized and Pepper presumed killed must have hit him harder emotionally than when he was "almost" dying from that arc reactor in IM2. And IM3 has proved that whatever Stane Black and RDJ did in IM3, the movie struck a chord with the average moviegoing public, and that is why they keep coming back for more and the movie has grossed more than one billion WW. And that isn't affected by what the fanboys do in the discussion forums like SHH.

I remember when so many people were bashing Iron Man 2 for being " one big advertisement for The Avengers". Now I guess with this incredible box office of IM3 I guess it'll be "The Avengers was one big advertisement for Iron Man3. Wow what are those idiots at Marvel thinking using one film to further anothers popularity.

I would have loved incorporation of Mandarin's 10 rings (alien technology and all). That would have been a more worthwhile twist than what we actually got. No more "smart" ideas, Marvel.
