The Jazz Appreciation Thread

Norah Jones can blow, man. I just found that out.

I like "Take Five." I was introduced to it while I was training a receptionist at my job two years ago. We were talking music, and I asked her what her favorite song was. She said "Take Five," and I listened to it and enjoyed it. It's really great tune that keeps your foot tapping.

Al Jarreau's version is the shiznizzlenit.

It's Coltrane day!

That woman needs to be loved tenderly by my hands. Her music is so awesome!

[YT]w2JRGv91urY[/YT]

I love it so so much.

Bumping this now one man thread one last time this year!:word:
Idris Muhammad-"Piece of Mind"
[YT]Go4HJo7GkrQ[/YT]

Sleep Walker featuring Bembe Segue-"Into the Sun"
[YT]OX6yckPTDNw[/YT]

There's not a person alive that would dislike this song. Well, except for terrorists.
Koop featuring the uber amazing Yukimi Nagano-"Summer Sun"
[YT]Keu_1ovu6Zs[/YT]

Jason Moran-"Crepuscole with Nellie
[YT]nUjMi1TiA7o[/YT]

I know I probably posted "My Favorite Things" in the thread before, but it's Coltrane dammit! It's the version that renders all other versions of "My Favorite Things" irrelevant. I kept hearing all those other versions around Christmas, and it just made me want to hear this version more. Coltrane is king!

Gretchen Parlato

[YT]ZmYRllome8Q[/YT]

First heard her on a youtube vid about Esperanza Spalding and some of the people she worked with on her latest album...

(this is originally a Herbie Hancock song FYI)

^I'm really liking her voice. I'm going to look up more of her stuff.

Seriously, Ornette ****ing Coleman:

To all the Bieber fans:

:funny:

(Not sure how she's "best new artist" with 3 albums out, though...)

The year Shelby Lynne won, I think she actually said at the podium that she'd been releasing music for several years. They define "new", it seems, as when you start to get some modicum of mainstream recognition, as opposed to simply debuting.

I couldn't care less about the Grammys, or any other award show for that matter, but it's nice to see Esperanza get some recognition. I'm happy for her.

I couldn't care less about the Grammys, or any other award show

Heh heh. Pretty much.

I just thought it was funny how over the top some of Bieber fans were reacting to the loss. Trolling her twitter account and her wiki page...

Well most Bieber fans are 10, and somebody let them use the internet. That's why they're so pissy, and that's also why it's so funny.

Speaking of angry Bieber fans...

I'm more of a Jazz Fusion person myself so where is the love for Chick Corea and Return to Forever with the equally amazing Stanley Clarke? ;)

Saw them in their latest incarnation RtFIV featuring Jean-Luc Ponty and Frank Gambale joining Corea, Clarke and Lenny White in Perth last month. Ponty's violin really added a whole new layer into their music it was amazing! And that was the first time I was introduced to Gambale too as I've been aware of him for so long. A pity Al Di Meola wasn't present but that was okay. Gambale didn't disappoint. And originally Bill Connors was meant to be a part of this new lineup but his health hindered that unfortunately.

Also a fan of:

- John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra (Billy Cobham too is incredible. And his Spectrum album from 1973 was brilliant too featuring the late Tommy Bolin. An album that got him noticed eventually replacing Ritchie Blackmore in Deep Purple)

- Weather Report
- Colosseum II
- Niacin (with Billy Sheehan, John Novello and Dennis Chambers)
- Cab (Tony MacAlpine, Bunny Brunel and Dennis Chambers)

...and still discovering other bands along the way.

I can't hate on Fusion because it's pretty creative. It's not my favorite form of jazz, if I even have a favorite, but some of the music is pretty nice. What are some of your favorites Aldion and FVD? Post some so I can listen to them while I work. That's pretty much my evil ulterior motive for keeping this thread alive. :awesome:

Paper moon and lullaby of birdland are just gems to me. Can't really explain it

Hearing ella sing A Tisket A Tasket is pretty amazing too

I'm in a Nat King Cole mood right now, so here's his version of "But Beautiful."

Weather Report - Elegant People
[YT]VRHZjoS0Sbw[/YT]

Mahavishnu Orchestra - The Meeting Of The Spirits (quality ain't the greatest but there are other versions that McLaughlin has done some of which with the great Paco DeLucia
[YT]oGNg9u-mwV4[/YT]

Return To Forever - Hymn Of The Seventh Galaxy (Live at Montreux 2008)
[YT]d0LJ2GlziJk&feature=fvwrel[/YT]

Colosseum II - The Scorch (RIP Gary Moore) :(

There you go Eman! :)

Thanks for those vids, FVD. I'm on Return to Forever now, and I'm really feeling them.
