Justice League The J'onn J'onzz/Martian Manhunter Thread

I think Benedict Cumberbatch could be great Manhunter.
I know he gets fan cast for absolutely every role but I would love that!

Yeah there are some roles he'd seriously be perfect for, and this is one of them. He'd also make a good malific.

He's my top pick all 3 of those roles moreso than any other characters.

He's so good I'd rather have him as a recurring character IF he can fit Marvel movies into his schedule. I guess he might prefer to be a one shot big villain so he can give a great performance and be free for other projects.

My new short list for MMH

Benedict Cumberbatch
David Ramsey
Colin Salmon
Lance Reddick
Peter Mensah

I think all of these men are well capable of playing MMH.

Cumby definitely has the A list quality, along with a suitable voice, face and size/fitness. But he's a very busy man these days, and he's my top pick for Braniac by gar and wide.

David Ramsey is someone I never gave thought to until now but he has the size and voice, and his face could easily be made to look like MMH through prosthetics or CG. I'm not going to question his talent for it but I've only seen him in Arrow and Dexter and he seems capable. This choice is tied for top pick along with Cumby.

Colin salmon isn't as young but he has the look and voice for a mocapped version of MMH. Same for Lance Reddick. Both are equally able talent wise.

Peter Mensah, also is older but has the look, resemblance, and physical fitness for the role.

There's little chance that MM'll be included with Goyer dissing the character.

He was joking during that interview. The podcast he was on when he made those was intentional satire.

Plus, with all likelyhood that he A) Won't be writing the JLA script, and B) Won't dictate what the roster is, it doesn't matter what he likes. That said, its unlikely he has strong negative feelings towards Manhunter. And for someone who appreciates the source material and uses bits whenever possible, I don't see why he would.

That said, I'm confident that Manhunter will play a small but pivotal role in JLA. Similar to his role in "The New Frontier". I feel the same about Hal Jordan.

Once again, Just to make it clear for some you...........

I have to laugh at how Goyer said only nerds cared about Martian Manhunter and how he'd have to change him drastically to make anyone care. While Marvel just had a huge success in using a team that barely anyone knew about, and because of their great handling of the project Guardians are an A+ top team in Marvel's world both movies and comics now.

We must have read different interviews...

Also, that's great that marvel(studios) is supposedly adapting their material with minimal to nill changes across the board but I'm not so quick to disregard a fresh artistic take on a character. I feel depending on the season, it's either in to praise or diss this approach, and given the times it's clear which season it is. I personally enjoyed the entire Ultimate line of books particularly early ones. I also happened to enjoy the various new interpretations of various key things in the TDKT world and I think others did as well(such as the League and Bane and even joker..). Lastly, I personally think they made a good call with the liberties they took with Blade, another character of whom the joke could be made that only die hards would know the real name of. Didn't seem to stop that from coming to fruition and also working, perhaps even arriving at something even more interesting.

Goyer's idea about the gov't growing J'onn in a petri dish after arriving upon his dna on one of their mars trips only to become an experiment/weapon not only makes some kinda sense(given our current nasa rover along with roswell culture), but it's adds an interesting spin to the material(that still exists for anyone that longs for it).

I don't think Goyer or anyone at DC/WB realizes the genius potential they have with Martian Manhunter.

We live in a culture that has continuously shoved down our throats - superhero films included - the idea that stereotypical looking (usually green skinned) aliens are evil. We've seen it in countless sci-fi classics, in the Avengers, we'll probably see it with Brainiac. So what better way to turn that around and distinguish yourself from Marvel at the same time by having one of those aliens you'd expect to be evil on the brand's big gun team, the JL?

Furthermore, there are so many racial themes you can tap into with MM in a way no one else can, barring maybe the X-Men. In Lex Luthor: Man of Steel, Lex remarks how easily people are willing to trust an alien like Kal-El just because he looks human. By default, Clark has a huge headstart to gaining public trust simply because he looks like one of us while J'onn looks like the "evil creatures here to take over" the media's been demonizing in pop culture for decades. Even though J'onn is (arguably) the most peaceful of the original 7.

And unlike J'onn, Clark isn't really an alien. I mean, biologically he is, but at heart he is as human as you and me. He grew up here on Earth and his character and values come from the Kents. Krypton and space are almost just as foreign to him as they are to us. He respects his Krypton heritage, but he is first and foremost human, much like how a child with immigrant parents living in America is aware of his or her background culture but is first and foremost American. Plus with Superman, the point was never that he was an alien, but that he is a Messianic figure sent from a better world to prevent our world from making the same mistakes. Whether he is from Krypton or Asgard or an alternate future doesn't change that core message. With J'onn, the whole point is specifically that he is an alien. He is the adult immigrant from the stars, grew up in an entirely different culture, witnessed the genocide of his family and race in the name of the White Martians' supposed racial superiority (similar to the way Nazis viewed Jews), who decided to make Earth his new home and start a new chapter. And although he misses his old home and family and doesn't quite fully adapt to human culture, he still manages to find a home and friends in the Justice League. He's all about the Justice League. There's no "complete" JL without him IMO.

It's part of why I never liked so many aliens on the JL other than Supes and MM. I think it kinda cheapens MM's backstory and him as a character.

Unfortunately, DC's been sidelining him since the start of the New 52. It's a shame they're trying so hard to bury him with not even the most interesting minority character they have (Static, Black Lightning, Blue Beetle > Cyborg). Which is funny in the first place, since MM already is your minority team member in many ways. Especially since his default human form has been an African American for a good while now.

I just think it's incredibly ironic that in the name of political correctness, to have a character with physical minority appearances, we've thrown out a character with actual racial themes attached to him. And this is part of why DC will always struggle compared to Marvel. Because they can't even see the depth and potential of their characters when it's right there in their face.

I love you man.

As a great fan of the Martian Manhunter, I certainly hope he is off the table as a possibility.

Martian Manhunter in this DC cinematic universe would be amazing and a spectacular visual as well. I like the idea of Jo'nn being another alien Superman can relate to. Also I would love to see his backstory depicted in live action.

MMH has so much potential if WB/DC would give him a shot. He could easily turn into a cult character. He doesn't particularly have a great rogues but you could easily build one with characters the DC universe has to offer.

If MM doesn't show in the DCCU he'd better show up on Arrow and/or Flash.

He show'd up in Smallville. I don't recall what the fan response was to that but I would have to imaging it was roaring...

I like the ideas of both Harry Lennix and Benedict Cumberbatch for casting.

Not a word about Green Lantern either. Is that off the table as well?

You could also give him his own movie if you feel he's too redundant. You would just have to nail the casting.

Will Smith anyone?

A movie called Martian Manhunter with Will Smith as the lead? Cha-Ching!
