The Last of Us The Last Of Us 2

I will pick this up sometime next year or this Christmas when its under 40 usd.
Same but in my case, under 80 CAD... I'm waiting to see the reception to GoT next month and I'll probably get it at discount later as well.

Yeah I'll get Ghost of Tsushima at a discount as well. A lot of these games cut their prices in less than a year especially PlayStation eXclusives (I just bought Death Stranding last week for like 38usd), and I'm never going to run out of choices as there are a lot of games that are more or less 20 usd to pick a game that is over 60 usd.

I'm half convinced now given people are starting to upload their gameplay that this game was made intentionally to cause controversy. There's nothing I dislike more than art with cynical intentions.

Some of the overreactions to this are still disgusting nonetheless, not to mention the death threats to people who are praising it.

Like chill people, it's just a video game. And yeah, I believe great games can be powerful transcendent experiences, but does it really require that much self control not to threaten such disgusting things over a game, movie, book, whatever?

Yeah I'm really disappointed with Rise of Skywalker and some of the choices that have been made with Star Wars franchise in general, but like it doesn't define my life. I've kind of moved on already.

I feel like social media and internet needs to be just taken away from some people, a tool or not.

Played the whole night. I'm probably 1/3 in. Gameplay is addictive, but I'm not feeling the story. Not that it's poorly written, more like not really interesting. If the second half of the game won't rescue the first one, I don't know what to think...

Also, voyeuristic ultra-violence is totally unnecessary. Doesn't add anything to the narrative or experience whatsoever. It's not problematic during gameplay (because it stays around the same level as in the first game), but in cutscenes it's just tasteless. Basically torture porn.

Fandoms suck.

This has spoilers so if you are avoid them don't read, but I think this sums up the issues with how this game is being released, how reviewers were allowed to talk about it, and promises that were made:

Here’s The Deal With The Last Of Us Part 2

Basically for me it's:

Don't promise me a game about Ellie. A game that you tell me is Ellie's game, and then make me play as someone else for half the game. That's just wrong and yeah it's false advertising imo.

If I am being real, the general reaction to this game so far is very negative. It feels a lot like TLJ. Where critics gave this big stamp of approval, and the fanbase does not seem happy with what is going on at all. The game definitely has it's fans, and I will be curious what the general reaction is after a week or 2. But I do not expect this to be TLoU again. A game that having it's detractors, is closed to universally beloved.

Strange. I wasn’t really expecting the game to go this way but this is a bit of a turnoff for me. It’s one thing when the villains are doing it or if it’s necessary for the material but otherwise I can be quite uncomfortable with this kind of thing. I don’t mind gore in for eg Gears of War or Doom or horror games, but with TloU it feels more real and personal and not what I want to see from the hero’s journey. Maybe I need a toned down version.

I will say, having watched a nice chunk of the game, it's very violent. Like unrelentingly so, and a lot of it involves you. There is a heavy emphasis on very directed and personal violence, and it touches everyone and everything in this game and now looks very, very real. I don't have a weak stomach, but I had to look away from a couple of things I have seen. It's raw and it's painful.

I just cannot imagine anyone enjoying this. From the various clips of streamers I've seen no-one looks like they are actually liking the experience. As Darth said, it's basically The Last Jedi all over again. Critics across the different media seem to be looking for something completely different in stories than what audiences are.

I can see people enjoying it. I can see myself enjoying a big portion of the game. There will be people who love it because it's very different, others who will hate it because it dare touch on any social issue, and countless others in the middle. I just have a hard time feeling like I am going to love it as a fan of the first game. Someone who grew to love it more and more with every playthrough.

I think the GoT season 8 comparisons make sense, from the standpoint that Druckmann seems to know what he has done here, and is prepared for the reaction. Whether people feel it is justified will be up to the individuals. But I can't imagine going into this game blind and a fan of the first game. That would be a horror show, and it makes me very happy the leaks happened in the first place. Even with all the BS mixed it=n, they ended up be really necessary imo.

The thing that gets me is that if Druckmann wanted to tell some type of revenge story then he should have taken that creative energy out on another game, or at the very least a different story within the same world. Last of Us was always a Joel and Ellie story. When you take that away there is no story anymore. You're left with a hollow shell devoid of identity.

This bugs me so much because the first game is the only time in my entire life the thought of having kids crossed my mind. Playing as Joel and protecting Ellie somehow unlocked some internal paternal instincts I never had before. That's how powerful that story and that relationship was. I rank it up there as being one of the best stories of any medium in my lifetime. Seeing this disaster unfold is something I could never have imagined.

I feel this is leaps and bounds beyond what TLJ did.
This game is the equivalent of some random child of an imperial officer beating Luke to death with a rock on Ahch-to in the second act and then forcing the audience to spend the rest of the film following that child until he kills Rey in the final 5 minutes. Then smashing to credits.

As far as I am aware, Ellie does not die. But if you are looking for revenge, there is none.

Speaking of false advertising,
on the Playstation store in big bold letters it says, "Ellie pursues vengeance". The ****ers at Sony and Naughty Dog really have some gall.
She actually does. I don't know how it will end, but pursuing of vengeance is there.

Has anybody started this yet?

I've not been following the news for this game but I really enjoyed the first Last of Us and was thinking about picking this up. I just started looking at some reviews....

Can someone explain where all this hate is coming from?

Basically, it's the Metal Gear Solid 2 syndrome. Now to be honest, MGS2 was a very creative innovative game that did a lot right. However, the bait and switch story where we play as Raiden the whole time was bad. And quite frankly, I don't think MGS ever found it's plot again after the first game, which IMO remains the best one story wise. Everything from 2 on just made it more and more convoluted.

I think you can have valid criticisms for the story but still like what the game does mechanically. Regardless no matter what anyone says you shouldn't be threatened over it.

Like I was frustrated and annoyed with what the story did for MGS2 but I still played it a lot, beat it multiple times. Like he game is a solid game and it did a lot of impressive things for it times.

In all fairness, let's be honest, a lot of the people trashing leaks were getting things wrong.

Everyone who was on the early hate train for this said Ellie was going to die. She doesn't.

Can someone explain where all this hate is coming from?

From what I can understand:

Joel gets killed early on in the game by a new character named Abby. You end up playing as Abby for most of the game.

I think the idea is the game is trying to make a statement about how toxic and poisonous vengeance is and how awful it is when you seek violent retribution. It just makes everything worse and just destroys everyone and everything.

There is a lot to unpack, and a lot of it is spoilery. I will say that the game is super violent and not kind to pretty much any character in this game. Especially the characters from the first game. The next bit is a spoiler, but one I think they should have revealed in the first place, but I want you to be warned encase you don't want to know.

You do not play as Ellie for the entire game. Half of the game is played as another character.

The success of the first game is how they wanted to sell this one. Which is fine, but considering what we know now feels really unfair. It feels like straight up marketing manipulation imo. Especially as:

They straight up created scenes for the trailers that are lies. The trailer intro for Joel is in the game, but it isn't Joel.
