The Last Voyage of Demeter (a different Dracula adaptation)

Between Renfield filming and Kusama’s movie getting cancelled, I almost forgot about this one.

The Last Voyage Of The Demeter Footage Reaction: Vampires On The Open Sea [CinemaCon 2022]

The footage showcased at the event kicks off with a ship isolated in the middle of the ocean. The crew hanging out in the lower decks are seen eating together. But they're not alone as we see that there is a coffin under the boards. More creepy imagery comes our way as we see a goat has been bitten in the neck. "This looks like a bite," some voiceover chimes in, as if there were any doubt. Things get even more ominous as we see characters knocking twice, working as some sort of signal. But what are they signaling about?

Things get creepy when something emerges from a wooden cage, though we aren't treated to what precisely it is. The source material would suggest it isn't anything good. We then cut to someone wrapped in a sheet and lit on fire, who is then thrown overboard. Finally, we see a vampire, hairless at that, jump from high up on the ship down to the deck below.

"We all know where he plans to deliver us: to hell" Cunningham, who plays the captain of the Demeter, says — putting a punctuation mark on the whole thing.

Beyond that, there were lots of interior lower deck shots that are lit with candles and flames, while the action we did see looks very heightened and stylized.

With all the awful news about the other vampire flicks getting canceled, I'm so happy this one is still on the way. It's been too long without Davos.

Sucks to wait, but more ideal than January IMO.

Both are considered "dump" months, so we'll see.

David Dastmalchian Talks Working With André Øvredal on 'The Last Voyage of the Demeter'

In the film, which serves as an adaptation of a single chapter from Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Dastmalchian plays Wojchek, the first mate of the Demeter, the ship that brings Dracula from Carpathia to London — though the crew don’t exactly know that. All they are aware of is the simple, innocent looking cargo they’ve been asked to carry, and the curious and terrifying events that befall them as a result, leaving nothing but a charred wreck when the ship inevitably arrives in London.

When speaking to Collider’s own Perri Nemirofffor Quantumania, Dastmalchian detailed what it was like to work with Øvredal on the film, and how it will stand out from other Dracula adaptations — particularly Renfield, the Nicholas Hoult-led film also coming out this year. He said that Øvredal took a “huge swing” with the film, which will be transportative for audiences as they experience the story of the world’s most fearsome vampire like never before:

“Andre is a student of and child of, grown up on the genre. Horror is his backbone and he is a true monster kid. He has this deep love and affinity for Bram Stoker’s Dracula, as do I. His knowledge of the book and his passion for the characters is so beautiful, and he’s got this really intense and unique vision and a way of telling stories that is so outside of the box. So anyone who’s familiar with his works like Trollhunter, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, The Autopsy of Jane Doe, you go, “Well, this guy never takes a little swing. He takes a big swing.” He took a huge swing with this film. I think it’s gonna scare the crap out of people, but it’s also gonna be one of those movie experiences that transports you to this other place.”

He says he’s also excited to explore the story of the Demeter specifically, as he’s a massive fan of the original Dracula, saying, “And I’m excited selfishly because it’s a character I’ve never gotten to play and it’s in a story that is one of my favorite chapters of one of my favorite books of all time. And it’s a chapter that’s short and that has never been explored except for on one series, and maybe in a couple of graphic novels.”

I like that take on Dracula.
The look reminds me of Gary Oldman's Batlike version in Coppola's film.

Oh god this looks so good. Love Dracula’s look.

I like it too.

While I love all types of Dracula iterations, it's a bit refreshing to see that it's not a guy in evening wear a suit ,and a cape flying ,around the ship.

Instead, its demonic looking, gargoyle like creature ,who would scare the daylights outta people stuck on board.

Yeah, very Coppola’s Dracula during those transformation scenes

Man, this looks all kinds of awesome and its definitely my kind of vampire flick. I just can't resist a gothic horror/creature feature take on Dracula which is something I've always wanted to see more of ever since Coppola's Dracula and I'm glad they are finally going in that direction again with the character after all these years.

Now, I'll definitely be seeing this either opening day or opening weekend.
