Exactly. At one point in time, the 40s and 50s actually, he never laughed like a maniac, nor pulled pranks. He didn't really have gimmicks, he was a psychopath who only had the appearance of a clown.

Sorry for the off-topic post, but isn't that what Nolan's going for with his Joker?

Mostly, but his Joker does appear to have a sense of humor. I was quite surprised and very happy to have read what happens in the end of the Dark Knight prologue, it really shows Chris's Joker is more than just kills. Nolan has said the early comics were the biggest influences but the more up to date comics are also being used as a basis.

On a related note, I chuckle at the number of people who say Burton doesn't understand Batman because he had him kill as he did in the early comics. But when Mr. Nolan's Joker is based off of these same early comics, he's just being completely faithful to the early source material.:cwink:
