The Lone Ranger

What?!

Reminds me of that western movie "Dead Man" he did years ago where he had a Native American friend.

Depp for Lone Ranger? He could pull it off (he can pull anything off) but I'm surprised he took the role.

So it's a definite? I was thinking they'd get a semi unknown B-list pretty boy for the role.

Depp? Really? I love the guy but he deserves a more eccentric character where he can spread his wings. If anything I could see him as Cavendish but still not ideal. But its Depp, hes good, just seems unconvential for him.

I'm with you guys - I'm not quite sure what to make of Depp possibly playing the Lone Ranger. At least there is potential with the possible casting choice though.

But like Terry78, I had thought they'd want to go with a semi-unknown or unknown actor for the role.

Though Tonto has to be a well known Native American actor, as does the villain. You can't have it just full of unknowns.

Whos the villain? Cavendish? Id really like to see Bryan Cranston in the role.

Outside of Adam Beach, are there many popular Native American actors?

Update

According to our Disney reps, Depp is officially signed to play Tonto and not the Lone Ranger as initially implied.

I know fanboys will embrace this because they'll say "race doesn't matter", but between this and Gyllenhall playing Prince of Persia, if the former is indeed true....that's some ********. I don't care how much I love Depp, don't do that to Tonto. Just don't.

Johnny Depp is supposed to follow the legendary Jay Silverheels? Sure Depp is a talented actor but choosing an American Indian actor to play Tonto seems obvious to me.

EDIT: Hmm... I just checked through Depp's wiki article and it noted that Depp has Cherokee ancestry.

The wiki article references this site: http://www.johnnydepp-zone.com/deppster/ which notes that Depp's maternal great-grandmother was full-blooded Cherokee.

I still think an actor people consider as American Indian would be a better choice.

Depp played a native American before and his Grandfather was a Cherokee Indian.

If Depp's Tonto, they have to cast an even bigger actor to play the Lone Ranger, IMO. Anything else, and the titular hero would be completely overshadowed.

Now that he's Tonto, I am officially not interested.

It's pretty obvious that Depp isn't 100% Euro. My mom is always asking if he's part mexican or something.

What the heck is Disney doing? So few specifically minority written roles and they give it to a 1/8 whatever white guy? WTF!

At least to the honorable thing and get a Mexican to pretend to be Native American. SSSHHH!!! People can't tell the difference.

Its unconventional which is more the type of role i see Depp taking on. It'll be interesting to see.

lol @ Depp-Tonto.

Strange choice, but I'll give it a chance :D

It's a real blast from the past seeing just the name 'Lone Ranger' as a thread title. I remember as a kid I would sit in my grandparents TV room watching it while they waffled to each other about stuff.

All the old, familiar places :*(

Well Depp is part Native American and it shows so its not like they cast some random blonde haired blue eyed actor as Tonto.
