The Lookout director Scott Frank discusses Deceptive Marketing Gone Wrong

thelookoutposter.thumbnail.jpg

If you’ve seen the movie trailer and poster (pictured left) for The Lookout, than you’re probably expecting a dark Memento like heist movie, and you would be wrong. It’s probably the worest example of false movie advertising since Bridge To Terabithia (which promised but failed to be a Narnia fantasy world family film). And it’s a shame, because The Lookout is a great film. So when I got the chance to speak to first time director Scott Frank (screenwriter of Minority Report, Get Shorty), I asked him about it point blank. Here is his response:
“We HATE the trailer. The trailer is NOT the movie and neither is that (pointing to the poster). All morning I’ve been having chats with the folks at Miramax marketing, telling them that the feedback without question - now we’re laughing because we hear the same thing with every interview people come in and say ‘Boy, I wasn’t even looking forward to seeing that movie because I thought it was going to be this kind of movie, NOT that kind of movie.’ And I keep telling them (Miramax) that. So Thank you, yes you’re right. The trailer, I wish I had more of a say, instead of just a voice in those kind of things.”
So the question presents itself: Should the filmmaker be more involved in the film’s marketing? And what else can be done to prevent studios from engaging in deceptive marketing. I understand that it can sometimes help lesser quality films, but what about a good film? What about The Lookout?

roeper said this was a masterpiece?

interesting

Man, I feel ashamed for not having reconized this until now, espicially since it has Joseph Gordon-Levitt in it, and I'm pretty much a Brick ****e. :csad:

I'm definately going to see it, though.

I really enjoyed the movie. I think Joseph Gordon-Levitt is really one of the best actors in his age range. You really get the feeling that he's just all about his craft, unlike some actors his age that are more about the trappings of celebrity than being an actor. I've yet to see a movie he's headlined that I didn't like.

So, did the movie bomb? :(

Some people should look at Memento box office numbers.

Opening Weekend: $235,488

Total: $25,544,867

It was a good movie. People hyped this movie so much that I was maybe expecting too much so it didn't hit me as hard as it should have been. I'd still recommend to check it out.

I've been trying to rent it all week, and its always out. I'll hit up Blockbuster today and finally buy it I guess.

its ok, there are two good things in this, 1) Ali G's wife and 2) Mr Joseph..other than that, nothing new.

Liked movie. I wasn't so impressed, but I must admit it was a good movie.

Deserves 7 out of 10, sadly it was very short film.

Did you download it ?

word. its been out on the net for a couple weeks.

i saw it the other day, nothing too impressive. its no memento if thats what you are expecting, not very many twists or turns, not clever enough if you ask me.

6/10. not very memorable.

I really enjoyed it. Joseph Gordan Levitt is definately coming into his own. Definately a star on the rise. His performance was definately superb. As far as the movie itself I really liked the plot and geniunely felt for the characters. As for people comparing this to Memento...there two completely different films, they both have issues with memory but thats were the similarites end. As for people complaning about the twists and turns, what happened to films just being character driven instead of parlor tricks and gimmicks.

I would suggest it....9/10

Saw this a couple weeks ago. I enjoyed it alot. Gordon-Levitt continues to shine no matter what he does nowadays. 8/10.

Good good movie, Gordon-Levitt was great, and did a great job at gaining the audience's sympathy. Plus, all of his buddies

Go see it. One of the best movies of 2007.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film. It wasn't how I thought it would be (the trailer really is misleading). Joseph Gorden-Levitt is superb... one of the best, most tragic performances of the year. You feel genuine sympathy for his character despite his flaws. Jeff Daniels stands out too. And Isla Fisher is smokin. Highly recommended.
