OK, I just got The Good, the Bad and the Ugly on DVD at Wal-Mart (I know I know). It'd the 3rd movie in the series but do I need to see the others to understand this one or does it stand on itself?

You don't exactly NEED them to know the story (in fact, TG,TB&TU is techically a prequel, and I do hope you got the 2 disc set), but Fistful of Dollars and For a few dollars more are just too damn badass.

Careful though, MGM is about to release 2-disc sets of FoD and FafDm, as well as Fistful of Dynamite (A.K.A. Duck, you sucker with James Coburn and Rod Steiger). In fact, these sets are already available for R2, check this out...

I'm pretty sure they're going to release them any time now, I hope this helps.

Damn, I already own those two. :( Maybe I can sell them then buy these new editions.... Ah well, I still need to pick up The Good, The Bad and The Ugly too. By the way Gammy, how do you know its a prequel?

Heh I do too, but I love them so much I don't mind to double-dip

Oh, it's pure specualtion but...*SPOILERS*
he gets his famous poncho in TG,TB&TU, remember?
The same one he's already wearing in FoD and FafDm.

lmao, I never really realized that, good catch on that.

Oh it wasn't me, dude :O
I read it somewhere a few years ago, then I saw it and yup, it made sense

It's really up to you, buddy.
Other than that thing I mentioned, they are totally stand-alone stuff.

I usually go like this: FoD, FafDm and TG, TB & TU.

^^^^They are so stand alone that someone I know thought they were three seperate movies. The only reason why he is called the Man with No Name is that he constantly uses psuedonyms throughout the movies, so he has a different name in each one. the same happens to his partner (of sorts) in FafDM.

I've noticed this before.
If you are referring that it is a prequel how do you explain angel eyes death in TGTBATU and his resurface in FAFDM. It makes no sense and Leone doesnt seem to like continuity, check the names also :)

Im not busting your balls, just a funny trivial thing that makes no sense.

Heh I know you're not busting my pretty balls, I'm always up for cool stuff like this...

You have to remember that Lee Van Cleef played Col. Douglas Mortimer (basically a bounty hunter looking to kill Indio because....oh you know), and in TG, TB & TU he plays "Angel Eyes" Sentenza (Verdict in Italian...cool, huh?, I still don't get what he was...was he just a treasure hunter? Was he really a military officer?), a totally different character.

Sergio Leone just liked him so much that he had to have him as a bad guy again :D

You don't need to see the others at all to view what is arguabley the greatest western ever made. As someone said, they are all stand alone films. I would suggest at some point you go back and view the two previous films, though they aren't near as good. Personally I like Fist full of Dollars, but don't particularly care for For a Few More Dollars More.
If you want to watch another film almost as good as The Good the Bad and the Ugly, I suggest picking up Once Upon a Time in the West. It's one of Leone's other fantastic films.

they're really all stand alone films concerning the same main character.

i think the film DEFENITELY stands alone...i cant see how anyone could say otherwise....and its also one of the greatest films of all time.

I think Eastwood's "man with no name" may actually be my favorite film character of all time. And talk about an under-developed character! But that is what makes him who he is.

You don't need to, but it wouldn't hurt to place'em in your dvd player and watch the previous movies

Last I heard sony has had these on the shelf indefinately, and there are no plans to release them to R1... I don't know why?

No. The are all three excellent stand-alone movies that really have zero to do with each other except pretty much the same cast.

If that's their (very, very, very, very, very, very, very stupid) plan, I'll just get the R2 discs and get a multi-region PAL/NTSC player.
Screw them.

No you don't need to see the other films first. In fact you don't need any order all, because their is no connection between the films in terms of the characters.

Clint Eastwood plays three different characters, with similar qualities in all three stories.

LOL so true :D

I don't "get" some of their decisions....I mean, R2 ad R4 have had the Ronin Collector's Edition since like, forever and we just got it like a month ago? WTF?

I stand corrected, check this out guys.

From the Wikpedia:

In three of Leone's most popular films, A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Eastwood plays a character with the same mannerisms, wearing the same poncho and hat.

Some fans believe that The Good, the Bad and the Ugly plays as a prequel of sorts to the earlier two — as Eastwood's character gradually acquires the clothing that he wears throughout the other films in the series. However, Christopher Frayling has pointed out in his massive Leone biography, Sergio Leone: Something To Do With Death, that the three films were not intended by Leone or his various script collaborators to be seen as a history of the exact same individual.

Indeed, it was United Artists, not the filmmakers, who came up with the idea of specifically linking the three films together as a series by referring to the Eastwood character as The Man With No Name in all advertising materials for the movies.

I watched the movie a few days ago (And it kicked all kinds of ass) and now I want the main music as my cell ringtone.
