I take that as meaning 'she's not that good' probably in the same realm as Bella Thorne.

Wait, why can't it be Gwen? Don't see many people making that suggestion.

I don't think anybody expects Gwen to appear before MJ, also if you look up Gwen Stacy you get a picture of Emma Stone, and so that portrayal is obviously synonymous with the character, and so people speculated Marvel may at least wait before casting Gwen again. And then Marvel did say or rather the director(s) and Tom talked about the Ultimate Spider-Man comics, and Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane as inspiration, so if you look at that as an outline then MJ would be first I believe...

Also Zendaya did a chemistry read/test with Holland, when actors of the opposite sex do this, it more than likely means their characters will be romantic.

Why does it even need to be MJ, either? Why can't it just be Michelle?

Well people are saying that she's either MJ or a new character, but the idea of her being a new character is not going well. I mean that would imply out of the 5 actors cast Zendaya and Tony's characters are original characters, so instead of using preexisting characters and fleshing them out, you created new characters who are more than likely taking the place of older characters.

I'm fine with either.

That why she has many chance to be Felicia than MJ.

Felicia was never really Black Cat on screen I think, so that could be a way from Marvel to have a fresh villain/love interest (unlike Mj,Gwen).

And just like they did with MJ/Felicia in tasm 2, they would get her a small introduction before giving her a main role in the second movie for instance.

She also did a chemistry test and Felicia and Peter are romantically involved so that would fit. Also she does stunts in her own show and I remember that one of the reason Emily Vancamp was casted as Sharon Carter was because she already was good with stunts thanks to her show. And she auditioned for Storm so she could totally be more in anti-heroes/superheroes role.

Whoever she is, I hope she took some acting classes before filming. It wasn't as bad as Katherine Mcnamara, but it wasn't really good either.

Yeah, Zendaya's acting does exactly stand out more than other Disney actresses.

Also, Emily VanCamp was announced as the female lead in Winter Soldier, but she didn't end up having all that big a part, and in fact ScarJo was the actual lead. VanCamp's was just a bit part. Hopefully Zendaya's will be like that.

I don't think she has more of a chance to be Felicia than MJ, b/c you have to remember that Amandla was in the running as well, does Amandla look like she can play Black Cat... Does she look like she can play MJ... With the Zendaya casting, I always think I'm sure who she is playing but then I remember Amandla was going for the same role and it throws me off. At this point, the only person I'm sure Zendaya is not playing is Michelle Gonzales.

I do think the experience she has gained doing her disney action show would be beneficial to playing Black Cat tho.

It would make sense, especially in regards to articles being very adamant that Zendaya wasn't a female lead.

Well, yes why wouldn't she? She's a good actress, rocks the grey hair, so white hair would work too.

I mean , it's not because she looks like "the good bff" that she actually can't play a Felicia type fo character.

I think it's more interesting to see actors play opposite roles that they're known for.

Wait, why can't it be Gwen? Don't see many people making that suggestion.

Gwen was just used in the past series' and Emma's portrayal is not only one people still hold in high regard but it's also still fresh in their minds. For those reasons alone, I'm doubting we see Gwen used for a while and should the time come for her to be used, it won't be 616 Gwen (with her death and all). Probably USM inspired.

MJ on the other-hand hasn't been on the big screen since 2007 and fans have been missing Peter's most iconic L/I so it makes sense to go that route. Besides, USM and Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane are all being used as inspiration so it's easy to say we're gonna see MJ again.

Why does it even need to be MJ, either? Why can't it just be Michelle?

If it was Michelle Gonzales, let's say, why didn't they just include the last name in the reports? For that reason and the order of the casting announcements (Peter to May to Michelle), I'm still believing that Michelle is a codename and there's a strong chance Zendaya is Mary Jane.

But as to why it just can't be Michelle? Beats me. :oldrazz:

Maybe she is just Michelle and will serve as a love interest for the high school trilogy and by the time we'll get Peter in college, he'll meet MJ, Harry, etc. but I'm doubting that.

She's decent enough in that show with Dennis Leary on FX.

Ah, I should check it out then.

Basically all of that.

Bold (edit): HA! That's legit.

Yeah, I wouldn't like that too much.

Spidey's world is full of interesting and different characters so there's no real need to make up one. If they feel the need to give us fresh faces, there are plenty of other characters to introduce like Liz (seem to be doing that), Sally, Gloria, Debra, Carlie, Cindy, etc. etc.

As for the guys? Randy, Kenny, Ned, etc. Hell, if they wanted to, they could introduce characters such as Ava Ayala and Samuel Alexander as a nod to USM ('toon) with 'em being fleshed out or simply cameos.

I don't really get Gwen vibes from Zendaya, but I guess it's not totally out of the realm of possibility--just not as likely given Gwen's major role in TASM. Ultimate and SMLMJ were both mentioned as influences, and in both Gwen transferred to Midtown later on. I could see them going that route in one of the sequels. Even in 616 she didn't appear until the college years.

If they do use Gwen, it'll be interesting to see what they do with her. They could go with Ultimate punk Gwen, but maybe they'll go for something similar to SMLMJ Gwen which isn't as much of a departure from 616 (but different enough from the Emma Stone version). It would probably be easier to mix in elements of the classic Lee/Ditko/Romita stuff with that modernized take on the character.

so, just read that Amandla played Rue in Hunger Games.

I don't really remember how much actual action Rue did in the film, but perhaps that suggests some degree of physicality that the actress can bring to her roles?

Amandla is much smaller than Zendaya, so height wise they aren't similar. but it is interesting they are of similar ethnicities ( bi-racial with half black, half white ).

I don't see Gwen or MJ in either Amandla or Zendaya, but I guess I can see Felicia/Black Cat?

with Amandla, her smaller stature might have lent itself well to being a sneaky, cat burglar and all that.

but they went with Zendaya in the end.

so, who knows.........

but, because both actresses are of similar ethnicities, it seems they were casting for that particular ethnicity.

which either suggests they made a conscious choice to race change MJ or they are casting for a totally different role.

I'm starting to lean towards the latter.

I don't think they are going to be focusing too much on an interracial relationship. Not that it's a big deal or anything; it will just get the story off task with Peter juggling romantic relationships. You only make a statement by casting an Asian or black male lead, and Marvel hasn't been willing to do that, nor has Hollywood by in large (Star Wars being a noticeable bucking of the trend). Fox could have made a huge statement if they went full black with the Storms, and I wouldn't have had a problem with it considering FF wasn't cannon with the MCU and was doing its own thing, but they didn't even do that. So casting Felicia as an exotic Halle Berry/Catwoman alternative is actually very safe casting. Changing MJ completely would be a bolder statement, but maybe Marvel doesn't want that distraction.

What about Elizabeth Gillies as Mary Jane?

What if Tony Revolori is playing Manuel J. Watson?

If Tony Stark hooks up with Peter, will you trust Feige?
