It's the same thing. There's nothing that defines MJ as black, just as there's nothing defines Bond as a brunette. If you have a problem with one and not the other, there's something going on there.

I'm against MJ being black and have no problem with James Bond being black. Is something going on there, too?

There's absolutely nothing going on here except your tendency to interpret things the way you see fit. MJ is the most important supporting character in Spider-Man history, it's irrelevant that nothing "defines" her as Caucasian, everyone knows who she is and there's no reason to change that in order to suit the current political climate, when they can simply give Pete a different girl. There's nothing racist in pointing this out.

Then you have to cope with the fact that as fans, you may never get iterations of these characters in the Marvel produced films. Zendaya's role will expand according to sources, so that leaves less development for an inevitable MJ and what not. Maybe characters like MJ and Harry come after high school or even college no less. Zendaya is not getting cast off to the side after one film by the looks of it.

And there is also no guarantee Spidey will have an Iron Man type of run in these movies. We have to believe Holland is locked in for three solo films, but that's hardly guaranteed even for Disney, given how poorly Spidey has fared his last three movies. So we may not get MJ until part III or perhaps never. He will be in the team movies as well so that's another entire dimension to Spiderman. It's not just about New York and Parker's little world anymore.

So if MJ is not cast here, and Zendaya's role expands, I don't expect MJ to have a major role in this trilogy. Possibly cameo in part II and a role in part III at best.

I don't see what's being changed if she's played by someone black. MJ would still be a human

People have grown up with the red hair and green eyes and won't tolerate changes. Doesn't matter if the chick is large in the bosom and curvy, she has to be that with the long red hair. It has to be a Christina Hendricks of 15 years ago.

It's the same thing we saw for Johnny Storm, which didn't work for a plethora of other reasons besides Johnny being black.

Fans are going to be petty until they get what they want. A race change does absolutely nothing to minimize my enthusiasm for the film. If hair color defines a character, then it's probably a ****ty character to begin with.

That makes sense. Yeah, I do consider the option that MJ might not even be a part of this version, they also said they would put more emphasis on Spidey interacting with other heroes in the MCU, rather than his supporting cast.

You also pointed out that the geeky guy getting the hot chick has been done to death, which I totally agree with, so they would probably go in a totally different direction. For example Ultimate Mary Jane was completely different from the original version, so if she is there, they can base their version on that.

A lot of that is awfully presumptuous, I was never this superficial when I expressed myself about not wanting Marvel to change MJ and believe me, I have plenty of tolerance. My enthusiasm would not be minimized if they changed her race either, just expressed an opinion why I don't think they should. It's nothing to lose sleep over.

Yeah, I think a mix of Ultimate and 616 would be ideal.

Honestly, creating a new love interest for Peter to add to an already long and forgettable list would be the least exciting of alternatives imo.

I want to see MJ in these films. Regardless of race. Even if she has a relatively small role. I want to see such an "iconic" character finally done justice.

I invoke the spirit of Majik and call you racist.

I miss Majik. :csad:

There is one reason. She is instantly recognizable. She is a character everyone knows about. She is not like Iris West or Tulip O'Hare, every person on the planet who knows about Spider-Man knows who MJ is. Mary Jane is "the" love interest. It's her, Selina and Lois. Therefore, I merely suggested to give Peter a new love interest and as expected someone decides to boil it down to racism.

Sure she's recognizable, but so is Black Cat and among these boards nobody has issues with a Black Black Cat (that's almost as bad as a Black Power Ranger played by a Black actor ).

I care more about the character at the core being nailed rather than comic accuracy 101.

MJ is way more popular than Black Cat. It's like comparing Lois Lane to Lana Lang and that's after Lana was part of a popular TV show for 8 years. It just doesn't compare no matter what.

I do too. This is just a situation where I hope they don't make changes for the sake of diversity. And if you see my other comments, you'd notice I never said I want her to be 100% the 616 Mary Jane, so "comic accuracy" is not something I'm obsessing over, despite that Peter seems to be pretty comic accurate. I just said there's no need for ethnic changes to try to accommodate the current political climate and pointed out that seeing him go after a different girl for once would make more sense than threading old ground. Go the Rachel Dawes road and give him a new girl he's never dated before or give him someone who hasn't been getting a lot of attention. Betty, Liz, Debra, Michelle, hell bring in Cindy Moon, that would be interesting. lol

To pander towards annyong SJWs on Tumblr :whatever:

The thing that really bothers me is that out of all the actresses in the world they got Zendaya  the race thing really isn't an issue for me I just can't stand her.

But I guess we'll see, Black Panther keeps getting casting news while we're still waiting for some substancial casting announcements even though Homecoming comes out a year before BP lol

Samee.

I'll never shake the feeling that one of the biggest reason she has been casted is her fame. That's why I'm more on board with Laura being MJ, no one knows her.

My ideal casting would be Jane Levy. But honestly MJ being Black wouldn't really bother me provided that they could get the personality/essentials of her character right still.

When was the last time Marvel did some really ****** casting? That's right, never
