The Matrix Resurrections

Unpopular opinion that I've probably said before in this thread: I prefer Revolutions to Reloaded, even though Reloaded has the better action sequences. That showdown at the Merovingian's mansion and the highway chase really elevate it.

To me Reloaded/Revolutions is a bit like Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2. The former is the fun, action-packed one, while the latter is the more somber, emotional core-- but it's one big story.

I think Reloaded is a blast and super rewatchable, but I will say that the final Neo/Smith battle in Revolutions is probably the piece of Matrix media I've revisited the most. The score alone never fails to give me goosebumps. I just find it insanely beautiful and moving that Neo has no chance of surviving that encounter, Smith knows it as an absolute certainty, and yet he just keeps going. Then there's Smith's amazing speech and Neo's realization/sacrifice. I love that entire sequence so, so much.

This is extremely harsh on Kill Bill Vol. 2. Which while having less overall action, takes a similar tone as the first film, but from a western stand point as opposed to the Japanese stylings of the first flick. But both films are about the cost of living the life of a killer and revenge. Both are high on the cool factor and both are extremely "fun".

Revolutions plays more like Deathly Hallows part 2. All ending, without a real story to tell. So what we get is exposition by way of philosophy. Also Revolutions has a ton of action. Just too much of it is in the real world and involves characters no one knows and thus find hard to care about.

A live action version of this should’ve happened already, but I digress.

I could definitely go for another Animatrix anthology.

I always thought seeing some of the pre-existing Matrix that were talked about would be cool, as well as seeing the previous anomalies/Chosen Ones/Neos. There's plenty of stories to be told in the world of the Matrix I think.

That's fair. I meant no harm in the comparison as I'm a fan of both films. I think I meant tonally more than anything, I just remember Vol. 2 feeling a lot more intimate than its predecessor (been a good bit since I've watched it), which oddly enough is how Revolutions strikes me despite having a huge war sequence and a highly bombastic climax. Everything with Sati, Neo/Trinity's journey, a Morpheus who's lost his faith, the pervading feeling of desperation throughout the film...it all strikes a strong contrast from the icy and sexy/stylish first two films and just brought a very different vibe. I definitely don't disagree that KBV2 is a more complete-feeling film though, and yes Revolutions is light on story. But for me, it packs the most emotional weight of the trilogy, despite its unevenness and being more of the third act of a bigger movie than its own movie.

Anything pre-Neo is doomed to be uninteresting imo. Because we already know two things about them. The Chosen Ones are kind of solo acts made to care about humanity in a very uncoupled Jesus kind of way. The second, is they fail. Which makes them inherently fruitless. What's to cheer? Inevitable failure by the people who make the wrong choice?

I always found it weird what they did with Seraph in Revolutions. The dude is suppose to be able to go hand to hand with Neo. Here? Barely above Morpheus.

Smith losing it on the Oracle is so hilarious though. In a good way.

Unfortunately, I feel like The Second Renaissance is already one of the best possible angles for a juicy Matrix prequel story. Of course, it could potentially be expanded into a film or series and fleshed out in greater detail, but we already have all the cliffnotes for what went down. And...also, there's no Matrix until the very end, which presents a big problem.

I do think fleshing out Merv and Seraph's history through prior Matrices could be a cool thing though. Especially if Merv was a prior One. Always felt like there was a lot more under the surface with their relationship.

Hey guys, we could either use all our resources to make countless drone destroying cannons, or about a dozen mech suits that aren't really helpful in combat. So which is it? Mechs? I agree.

I actually think that’s a perfect analogy.

Kinda funny too how Reloaded/Vol 1 both have their protagonists in massive, one against an army fight sequences.

Only major difference in the climaxes for Revolutions/Vol 2 is that one movie’s final fight is more elaborate and the other’s is fast and pithy.

I say all that to say, good point.

I'm not sure I can agree that Revolutions is less action-packed, just that the action itself is just really boring and really long. :funny: Can't believe they got woke now though in the sequel to the movie where Cornell West randomly appears.

I know it sucks. I hate it too. But there is an action sequence in the middle of Revolutions longer then ****ing Helm's Deep. :lmao:

Having seen the Lady Snowblood movies, I am nothing less than harsh towards Kill Bill...
