One thing I give them a lot of credit for with The Matrix sequels was the fact they were very bold. Yes, that also made them far less popular, but I like the attempt to do something different. I was kind of worried this would be some type of new age meta narrative that is essentially the same as the first movie like a lot of these end up being, such as TFA. But if this is also attempting to go different places, that makes me more excited

TLJ comparisons are hilarious. After The Rise of Skywalker, which was just trying to appease angry fans, being the worst in the entire saga, I was thankful Rian Johnson took chances. If this film is subverting expectations and isn’t following conventional plot devices then I say bring it on! People seem to think The Matrix is meant to be like other franchises.

Nah... Both TLJ and RotS are awful in their own unique way, the fact that RotS way shameful nostagia bait doesn't change that Rian Johnson made movie that **** on everything people cared about and subvert expectations to the point where it becomes ridicolous.

It's not like you either make "TLJ" or "RotS", George Lucas made prequels and it was definitely fresh, new and original, he didn't change anything for the sake of change like Johnson, but because he wan't to tell different story in different way and I hope that new Matrix will more like prequels than TLJ.

Rian was boxed into a story that, from the looks of it, was gonna end up essentially redoing everything from OT over again. I still think TLJ isn't even that subversive, at the end of the day. Sure, it shakes things up a bit, but still ends on a note that totally honors the core of what Star Wars is all about and yes, Luke Skywalker. I hope Resurrections is way more crazy and subversive.

I want a movie made for me as an adult, not just my inner child. This is an R-rated franchise after all.

Abrams (I don't like him at all) make a story (stupid story), about how guy named Snoke destroyed everything that Luke, Leia and Han accomplished (offscreen) and then comes Rian Johnson and he kill off Snoke for "shock value" and basically tells us that he didn't matter... Not because this makes narrative sense, but because Rian didn't care about him. I spent a lot of time trying to understand Rian Johnson and I honestly think that this guy cared only about "his" story and nothing else.

This movie is not even half as clever as Rian's thoughts, the twists get predictable and absurd at some point, and I know a lot of people in the TLJ production advised Rian to change som things and he was too confident to consider them.

TLJ isn't even that subversive, most of the things is still copy/paste of what we saw in the original trilogy but with "twists". But that's just my opinion.

The choice to have critical commentaries was a boss move. I watched those and the more positive philosophical commentaries back in the day. Both were illuminating in different ways, and I still remember one cringey moment where the critics had just gotten something wrong. They kind of played themselves doing it, I don't think it made them look good.

I watched those a lot back in the day, although definitely moreso the philosophers' commentaries. I will always fondly remember Cornell West referring to Ken Wilber as "Brother Ken" lol. Really enjoyed their interpretation of the trilogy, it was very consistent and coherent with their mind/body/spirit breakdown of the 3 worlds.

Also, you know, watch Speed Racer. I finally did, and I definitely appreciate it and what they were doing more now than I would have when it came out.

I actually really enjoy that game. I played it a few times on PS2. Still have the copy of it.Even the ridiculousness of the boss ending and the Wachowskis stick figures talking before it. But I wouldn't really expect that type of weirdness in a Matrix movie tbh. As different as the sequels were from the original, I can still buy it as the same universe and it still has enough familiarity to it. Whether people like where the story went or not. Idk. I hope to be proven wrong and love this movie. Because I have enjoyed everything else.

I liked TLJ in the cinema but the more I reflected on it, the more I was unsure about where it left the story overall. It was a problem that plagued the trilogy, that there was no consistent thread. I actually would of preferred had they given us a true sequel to Rian's film as opposed to the mess they gave us.

I also don't think the new movie will go to THAT level of over the top meta-weirdness haha. But I'm just saying...to me, Lana/The Wachowskis are very quirky filmmakers. Once you take a step back and look at the whole body of work, there are a lot of different tones and influences there. And then just taking into account who they are as people.

I think the key here is we have one of the original authors adding onto their own work and bringing their growth as an artist over the years back to something they created 20 years ago. That is something very different than a situation where you have two directors asserting their own artistic direction on something that another person created, which is what we had with Star Wars.

I could walk out of Resurrections and not like it, I'm reserving judgment. I didn't care much for Jupiter Ascending, it was kiiiiind of a train wreck as I recall it, ambitious as always though. But, I'm not going into this movie with a mindset of "Lana has to do X, Y or Z or it's sacrilege!". As far as I'm concerned, I have no expectations, I never thought we'd get another Matrix film so I'm purely interested to go on the ride and discover what has brought Lana back to these characters after all these years.

I remember really digging it too, but I haven't seen it since then. Admittedly though, I went in as a Wachowski fanboy predisposed to like it. I'd be curious to see how I feel about it on a rewatch. I have a feeling that any subtext of what they were going for probably went over my head back then.

I really enjoyed Speed Racer as well. That fight scene Matthew Fox/Racer-X had in his apartment was pretty sick. I loved the visuals and quirkiness of that movie. I watched it a year or two back. I think it's still a fun movie. Jupiter Ascending I never watched more than once.

Yeah, I rewatched Speed Racer recently and really enjoyed it. One of the few live-action adaptions that really capture the spirit of the original anime imo.

For all the wacky s*** they put in the film, I think the performances really hold it together. There's an earnestness to the film, and you need to be able to sell it without going full sugar overdose. The whole cast is great, but Emile Hirsch and Matthew Fox especially so. The Wachowskis usually know how to pick their cast.

I feel your pain haha. This is a hell week at work for me, but the light at the end of the tunnel (other than Christmas) is I am seeing No Way Home and Resurrections back to back on the 26th. I'm just trying to keep myself distracted here so I don't have both spoiled for me on social media.

I applaud you for avoiding spoilers! My internet searching habits and lack of self control made me essentially spoil the hell out of myself before seeing No Way Home. Still had a blast though!

I was actually thinking about when Racer-X turned into Batman to fight that Ninja lol! But tbh I really enjoyed every scene with Matthew Fox in it. I'm also a huge fan of the show "Lost" so anytime I see a cast member from that show in something else, I nerd out a bit haha.
