The Matrix Resurrections

Really glad to hear you enjoyed it so much @Gothamsknight.

It would be so easy for a Matrix sequel in 2021 to come out and be all...."YO....remember bullet-time and kung fu? Yeah....check out what we can do NOW....". But truthfully, we already got that type of Matrix sequel with Reloaded. I'm not sure it would even be wise to try and compete directly with that.

I'm glad that the heart and emotion of it sounds to be more at the center here.

I read somewhere that the movie looks like a perfume ad and now I can't stop thinking about that.

You hit the nail on the head.

I read somewhere that the movie looks like a perfume ad and now I can't stop thinking about that.
That is a hilarious observation haha

I have to say, it kinda offends me that some are saying this looks like a "low rental" movie. Oh, how i disagree with that statement.

I am enjoying the movie in a campy way. It's so meta you'd think Charlie Kaufman did a ghostwrite on the plot.

But honestly Jessica Henwick and Abdul-Mateen are carrying the movie for me. They're both great fun and I am trying not to fall in love with Henwick, lol.

My biggest disappointment is the cinematography. The original trilogy was such a stylistic feat for a FX-heavy action film. You can tell this new one is not nearly as storyboarded, which is fine, and I don't mind that the green filter is gone... but look beyond this one's color saturation and contrast and the cinematography is just not good, not in composition or really lighting, either. It comes off looking like an expensive TV show.

So, yeah, mixed feelings so far.

This film is a mix bag. I feel like The film tries too hard to cram too much in the form of nostalgia with meta commentary and plot beats.

Gotta admit

I did like what they did with the Merovingian. He went from a refined gentleman with power and now looks like the Trainman’s brother lol. Loved his scene during the exiles fight.

Liked and hated what they did with Niobe though.

Gonna watch this tonight but...the action is BAD guys? Wow. Theres a lot of great looking spectacle in the trailers, did the trailers trick us?

Anyone else think Bugg's crew has the most normal sounding names of The Matrix series?

I wonder if we are destined to see The Matrix continue in some form as an HBO Max property, with or without Lana involved. It just seems like between Spidey, omnicron numbers skyrocketing, day and date release....this is the worst possible set of circumstances to come together for the theatrical release of this film. But I have no doubt it'll still put up strong numbers on HBO Max, much like Many Saints of Newark.

Dying to see this film for myself and figure out where I stand on it, but I can just already picture WB pushing for a Matrix streaming series if it's determined that it doesn't have box office juice anymore. We'll see what happens there, but yeah.

Havent finished watching yet, but there are too many inserted flashbacks from the previous films.
It alone is like one giant meta joke and play on nostalgia. Yes, there's a lot of flashbacks.

I know but it looks cheap at some point.
I think it was stated there were production issues due to COVID, which could have led to the decision to

Use so much archived footage, but they try to weave it into the narrative at least.

Did anyone see:

Tom Hardy?

I agree that Lilly may have been the one who was the action person here. :hehe:

I just finished it and of course I will need to rewatch, but I did not like it at all.

It was just as I feared: the movie ultimately had NOTHING to say. I empathize with Lana Wachowski and her feelings of wanting to resurrect Neo and Trinity because of what was going on in her life, but this story was so half-baked. Subtlety was missing from this film, and when you have to do all these callbacks on top of callbacks, you're telling us too much rather than showing. I didn't agree with a lot of the decisions made in this film, it does feel like everything they did and fought for in the original trilogy was all for nothing, but this movie just has a lot of interesting ideas but horrible execution.

Jessica Henwick and Neil Patrick Harris did great in their roles though.

I strongly disagree. The film has a TON to say. There is commentary about our culture’s obsession with nostalgia and the need to reboot everything and how that directly relates to the original films’ themes of what is real and escaping reality. We don’t want to live in the real world. We want to live in Blockbuster Reboot Sequel because the first one came out when we were young and times were simpler then. This further bleeds into commentary on our relationship with technology like the original films, but these themes are now explored from the perspective of 2021. The world is much different than when the first film was written.

After seeing it a second time, I believe this is probably the best Matrix sequel we could ever get. Truly a gift
